Broken grub menu after upgrading to latest kernel
Hello, After performing my daily update, which included the latest kernel (2.6.9-9-amd64-k8), my system (SATA boot/root) failed to reboot. On the grub menu, default, defaut (recover), old, old (recover), 2.6.9-9-amd64-k8 & 2.6.9-9-amd64-k8 (recover) were leading to kernel panic. Thankfuly the old 2.6.8-9-amd64-k8 was working fine and I managed to boot without external media. After examining /boot & /boot/grub/menu.lst I found the following errors. 1. There was no symlink intrd.img -> initrd.img-2.6.9-9-amd64-k8 in /boot 2. There was no initrd line in menu.lst for the default and the default (recovery) menu entries 3. In the .old I found this stragne line : kernel /boot/vmlinuz.old .old ro and corrected it to kernel /boot/vmlinuz.old root=/dev/sda1 ro (similar problem for .old (recover) 4. There was some problem for 2.6.8-9-amd64-k8 menu entries but I do not remember them I am not sure if there is a problem with the latest kernel package or just some weird behaviour of my system. Anyone else had similar problems? Regards John Chronakis
gimp bug (?) and workaround
Hello, In my system (pure64/kernel-2.6.8-9-amd64-k8) I was not able to run gimp. It hanged just before showing the splash screen. If I start it with --no-splash works perfectly. I also filed a bug with the reportbug tool. Is it the proper way to file bugs for amd64? Regards John Chronakis
Installation report: Abit KV8 Pro / Athlon 64 3000+ / SATA
A couple of days ago I completed the installation of pure64 on an Abit KV8 Pro. I could say the whole process was almost easy. Here is a detailed report. Hardware: --- M/B: Abit KV8 Pro (VIA K8T800Pro+/VT8237) CPU: Athlon 64 3000+ H/D : Hitachi Deskstar 160G SATA VGA: MSI GeForce FX 5700LE On board sound: AC 97 On board gigabit lan: VIA VT6122 ... Failed and disabled. Using a Realtech Debian: netinst from: image http://debian-amd64.alioth.debian.org/install-images/sid-amd64-netinst.iso downloaded on October 18th. mirror used: ftp://ftp.de.debian.org/debian-amd64/pure64/ sid main partitions (all reiserfs): hda1 (10G): / hda2 (1G): swap hda3 (70G): /home hda4 (76G): /I don't know what to do with it yet Installation highlights: - * Boot from cd and base system installation: - Linux26 led to non existent kernel image. Later I discovered that the only available kernel is 2.6.8. - VIA VT6122 on board gigabit lan was not detected. A quick google revealed that there is no support yet. Replaced with a realteck. WARNING: I had to disable on board lan from the BIOS, otherwise the installer was failing with an error (sorry don't remember the message) - No more problems. Base system installation perfect. * Package selection - With sarge I was used to start with a few task selections. Here there were not any tasks. - I finally did an apt-get install `cat my_favorite_package_list` and got my system up and running - And because the process took some days, I did an apt-get upgrade/dist-upgrade, which worked fine too. * nvidia driver I had 2 issues with this. a. The fresh kernel (2.6.8-9) that was downloaded after the upgrade, turned out to be compiled with gcc-3.4. I didn't expecting this, although the howto says something about it, because there is a Debian version named gcc-3.4 and it was not the one I had installed. After downloading gcc-3.4 and setting 'export CC=gcc-3.4' the nvidia installer compiled the modules correctly. b. nvidia installer is coping 32 bit modules over 64 bit modules. Just before it asks to copy them, switch to a console and grab a copy of the /tmp/somerandomname directory. Ignore all installer errors and when it finishes, copy the lib64 modules (form your tmp copy) to /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/ * USB Works fine with a usb memory card * Sound Works ok with mpg123 and kde. Working with it: I am using this box as a development workstation and not (yet) as my primary desktop. After a week running mostly development tools I really like it. Excellent performance, and pretty good stability. All the development libraries that I use (gtkmm-2.x, gtkglextmm-1.x, commoncpp2, ode) worked fine. commoncpp2 may have a problem, but I am not sure yet. Kde, konsole, kdevlop, konqueror, kmail are working fine. kdevelop3 crashed 2 or three times, but it crashes on my i386 sarge too. Today I installed apache2, php & mysql. They seem ok, but I have not used them at all. Conclusion: --- Missing support for VIA VT6122 gigabit lan, but you can get a realtech for 5 euros. Very easy installation (just disable on board Ethernet) The howto needs a little more work since it is confusing at some points. On the other hand the mailing list is excellent. Thank you people!
Which kernel?
Hello, I managed to install a base system with an installer downloaded on October 18th from http://debian-amd64.alioth.debian.org/install-images/sid-amd64-netinst.iso The base system installation was quite easy (expect a full report when completed) but two things were not straightforward. 1. At the cd boot prompt, typing linux26 gave me the response that there was no such image 2. At hd boot after grub installation, I get 4 options: ÂÂÂ ÂÂ i. linux ÂÂÂ ÂÂ ii. linux (recovery mode) ÂÂÂ ÂÂ iii. linux 2.6.8 ÂÂÂ ÂÂ iv. linux 2.6.8 (recovery mode) Why 2 different versions of kernels? Does the netinst image installs 2.4 kernel. I am currently away form this linux and unfortunatly I forgot to uname it so I do not know what kernel version 'linux' loads. Regards John

Usually gentoo guys would disclaim that gentoo is way faster than debian because of all their fine-tuned compile options specifically tailored to the system they're building on. Well, this might be true for i386, but it surely isn't for amd64 - simply because all the debian pure64 packages are built using the amd64 optimizations: there is no speed-vs-backwards-compatibility tradeoff here. As for stability, debian pure64 is mainly based on debian sid/unstable. It runs fine for me, but I probably wouldn't want to run it on production critical systems. But actually I doubt that's different with the other distributions - amd64 just isn't tested as well as i386 is for obvious reasons ;) * What is the difference between pure64 and gcc-3.4? I saw somewhere that gcc-3.4 binaries run faster. Is there a catch? I haven't tried the gcc-3.4 archive myself, but rumor has it that it is faster - gcc-3.4 making more aggressive optimizations using the new registers the amd64 introduced. The catch being that the official debian ports are running with gcc-3.3. So the gcc-3.4 branch is an amd64 specific one. It is planned to continue that branch, but there's no estimation as to when all those branches will finally converge... * The mailing list left me with the impression that sarge is not ready yet, is it?. Does it keep up with the i386 sarge? Can it be installed like an i386 sarge (net inst->base system->package installation)? Well, official sarge is going to be released "soon". amd64 sarge is actually a symlink to sid, afaik (correct me if I'm wrong). As for installation, there are debian installer CD images available for amd64. Generic, i.e. i386, netinstall images wouldn't work. Thank you for the information. I get a vague feeling that 64 bit sarge is less supported than pure64. I will try pure64 and leave gcc-3.4 for the future. Regards John

And here are my questions: * How does debian amd64 compares with other distros (suse, fedora) in terms of stability and 64 bit efficiency? pure64 is about the same as gentoo in speed terms (and i spent a lot of time testing gcc flags with gentoo). I've found debian to be more stable than gentoo, not quite, but you notice de difference. * What is the difference between pure64 and gcc-3.4? I saw somewhere that gcc-3.4 binaries run faster. Is there a catch? Not really shure, but as amd64 is quite new, newer versions of gcc will improbe the execution speed of the executables. So you can bet gcc 3.4 version will be faster. * The mailing list left me with the impression that sarge is not ready yet, is it?. Does it keep up with the i386 sarge? Can it be installed like an i386 sarge (net inst->base system->package installation)? I personally like the idea of the gcc-3.4, since it looks like the "most" 64 bit version. However this is not intended for my home pc and I would not like to make difficult the life of my colleagues who are not experienced Linux users. Pure64 is fully 64 bits, and works fine. It's also easy to install most of the times (although some installation problems have been reported with some motherboards) Any help would be appreciated. I have a pure64 distro (gcc 3.3), and it works flawlessly. No hangs, no crashes. Only a few programs seem to have a few problems: (Anjuta doesn't even start, but it's the only one). Therefore, pure 64 is a secure bet. You can test gcc 3.4 and if meets expectations upgrade the rest. (and post your impressions to the list xDDD) Regards Aritz Beraza [Rei] Thanks Aritz. You 've been very helpful! I will go for the pure64. Expect an installation report very soon. Regards John
