Re: unable to install lenny using CD1 (26-Jan-2009)
Try a boot option: all_generic_ide. Basically your PATA(?) chip may not be recognized with an older kernel. Do you have a USB CD/DVD drive? It may be easier to use that. Justin. Tt worked with the mem problem, but I got a lot of new troubles. So I ruefully come back to your advice and updated the bios to the new version again and with your option it worked nearly perfect. Even my grub problem with the raid controller (3ware) disappeared. I still have one strange error. When I do a apt-get install , e.g. linux-image-2.6..., this file is corrupted (apt-get said gzip: invalid compressed data). If I fetch this deb-file with wget into /var/cache/apt/archives and do an apt-get install it worked. I tried within my net some filetransfers without a problem. So the interface seems to be ok. Strange, do you use an http proxy by any chance? Also you could try a different mirror just incase there was some temporal weirdness. I assume you ran the latest version of memtest86 and let it cook for some time? And apt-get from my other maschine with the same net/firewall to the same mirror worked smoothly. Sorry for abusing your time but I am going to buy a computer with the following ingredients. I am quite worried that I might have to wait for half a year for support of some of the chips so I decided to ask first if someone has used this (with good or bad experience): Motherboard: Intel (s775) Johannesburg DQ35JOE mATX I have only used a few Intel boards myself, but I wouldn't buy one. I only buy Asus boards. There has been a lot of trouble for people with more than 3GB ram and getting the MTRR cache setup right on intel boards in the last year, and it has taken a lot of pushing to even get intel to admit they screwed up their bios, while Gigabyte and Asus had a new bios within days of being notified of the mistake in intel's reference code. Not what I would consider a well supported board. Most affected users were windows 64bit users who got a very very slow system if they had more than 3GB ram installed, and linux gets the same slow performance since the top of ram is not cached and hence very slow. The salesman knew this problem but said it was a problem with the 965 chip but was solved with the Q35 chip. I hope he is right. About the kernel, I most often end up installing Debian unstable and then I wait for it to become stable if there are no problems. But on my main computer I happily use unstable and experimental. Cheers Gudjon -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] I use a 965 and p35 boards. The problem with the cache is annoying but just append mem=8832MB (for an 8GIB) config and it solves the issue (with the 965)-- no issue with the p35/gigabyte I have. The main requirements are that - it must be light (the more so, the better); small screen size is not a problem as this won't be for watching DVDs... - it should have a _working_ graphics output (to plug it to a projector); some laptops seem to have problems with this, under Linux... - it must have a supported WIFI chipset. I think about the only way to be quite sure wifi will work on a laptop is to get something with an intel cpu/chipset/wifi in it. intel actually tries to support linux for their wifi chips. My wife has an Asus R1F, which from what I have read is very very easy to install linux on, although she hasn't tried it yet. I believe it has the intel 39xx wifi chip (the a/b/g wifi) which recently had support contributed to the kernel by intel. I think the only part of that model that is known to not (yet) work with linux, is the tablet screen input, but it is USB based, and quite likely wacom based, so people are working on it. -- Len Sorensen -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
