I'm looking to buy one of these, but - being Dell - they won't guarantee
Debian support. And of course they won't offer a test unit for a single
 system, either.

I don't want to risk just going ahead and ordering one, but I'll happily
take the word of someone who has already tried this with Debian...

I'm planning on getting a four quad-core Opteron version with 128GB RAM
 for some statistical analysis applications.

Success stories (and horror stories) welcome!

I use grml/debian amd64 on a Dell R805 with no problem til yet, 8 core,
64 GB RAM.

 Thanks,

 Dave.

I saw hell a lot of guides hwoto use chroot, but I don't want a chroot!
Any guide available which is simple enough (e.g. just install some .deb
 and it works?)?
Tecnically, you can't simply install the .deb in the 64-bit system, as
it is for a 32-bit debian. In practice, you can try
--force-architecture (or something similar), but there is no guarantee
that there are packages with the 32-bit libraries that Skype needs,
and even if there are, it might simply not work.

I have always had problem with force-architechture next time I try to
upgrade. I have been running the static version of skype directly in my 64
bit system. I copy the binary to /usr/local/bin and run it without any
 problems or chroot.

I just installed 2.0 beta. The 32-bit libXss.so.1* must be copied to
/emul/ia32-linux/usr/lib and then it runs smoothly.

To bad, grabbed it, copy the folder into /opt/ and symlinked the bin
file... Now it wants a libasound.so.2 lib...

 Hope it helps
 Gudjon

What we want to solve is to share 300 dvd images for many cities, we
first thought about having a big server, and a huge
bandwidth(thinking what we have in our country, Colombia), but as I
see, maybe in five years the costs will drop down enough to follow
 this alternative.

So, maybe having a peer to peer system, would make the idea
materialize, so my question is now:

Is it possible to have a p2p private network to share those
   resources?

Maybe having two servers with not so high bandwidth, but with enough
disk. The info doesn't change, as they are just dvd images, the
dvds can't be public, due to copyright issues, so is it possible to
authenticate or there are ssl options or something like that to
 share the info?

How about a OpenAFS filesystem and a fileserver where it is needed, some
correct ACLs and a replication via night

 libsdl1.2debian-alsa.

Just for a quick note:
anyone has a suggestion for a dual-Opteron board for Dualcore opterons

E.G. the Tyan Tiger K8WE looks nice for me, but does it run flawless
with debian amd64?
At least this board has to power up 4 firewire bus for us here.

 Which problems do you experience?

Like in the other Email, it didn't start.
But now I solved it:
Your skype package misses the dependancy of skype on lib32xft2.
I installed the lib32xft2 package and it worked well enough like before.

Hi all,

I'm quite new with Debian 64-bits.
I just installed it on my laptop and it's great :)
I just had one question, openoffice is currently not available as a
debian-package, does anyone know when it will be available?
Also is openoffice 2 available on AMD 64?

OpenOffice is a horribly-bloated piece of software which, thanks to various
assumptions and other dirty tricks used by programmers who never imagined
that their work would see the light of day {it used to be a closed-source
project}, will not compile and run properly on anything other than a 32-bit
processor. OpenOffice2 does not fix all the problems

A lot of people think they need OOo for the same reason that a lot of people
think they need MS Office, or Windows.

Because it IS used.
We are all NOT private persons and if you are at office, you NEED some
software which IS stable for some years and which works nicely with MS
Office docs and produces some nice files.
And you need something which works on nearly all platforms, Apple OS X,
Windows XP AND Linux.

If you're running KDE, I recommend KOffice. Not only is it 64-bit clean,
 it's
faster, it handles .doc files better than OOo, and now it can even write OOo
files. If you remember it being crash-prone and awkward, you obviously
haven't used it recently {the KDE in Woody was horribly out-of-date}. If
you install all the necessary libraries {apt is great, isn't it}, you can
run KOffice anyway. It looks good in WindowMaker.

Ok, KOffice on mac? KOffice on Windows?
And: Koffice on lars/ice wm WILL bloat your system. Hell a lot of people
WON'T use ANY KDE app, because they are bloated and need a lot of libs.

You could use a 32-bit OpenOffice.org in a 32-bit chroot, but that would be
rather like buying a cat and teaching it to bark. Isn't the point of having
a 64-bit processor, to run 64-bit applications on it?

That is why I want a OO2 64bit and no chroot.
And that is why we use 32bit in our department on dualcore 64bit CPUs.

I use a Intel Board with ICH7 with latest sid installer on amd64.
And yes, first it didn't recognized the SATA HDs and the network controller.
But if I used the netinstall CD with expert mode and went back and

Seems like autodetect doesn't know these hardware, but drivers work well.

Deian x64 installer for Intel Pentium D d945gtp board

Hi!

I' ve got the daily netinstall mini.iso from the x64 site and tried to
install debian. But the netinstall CD hasn't recognized the intel e1000
network card on my D945GTP motherboard.
Any hints, tips?

Debian pure-amd64 and sun-java

2005-06-21 Thread Lars Schimmer

Hi!

I tried to install java after the small guide on:
http://chrismetcalf.net/blog/archives/2005/05/19/mini-howto-installing-java-on-debian-unstable/
with the package jdk-1_5_0_03-linux-amd64.bin from sun.
It all worked well within isntallation, but then while trying to use
java, I get a:

/home/user# java
Error occurred during initialization of VM
java/lang/NoClassDefFoundError: java/lang/Object

Anyone has brought java to run without a problem?

Ok, that problem was easy to solve, I just unziped the .bin instead of
sh ...bin it...

But now azureus won't run and jsut prints out:

Yes, it's working. Just start the game with nexuiz-linux-x86_64-glx.

I just got the permnission to secure - read README.TXT errors...
I must have missed something while setting the OS up.

You should always run the clients from http://distributed.net .. their
X86_64 client works with debian ..

I setup that version, Ok, i got it and run it in a screen. Official package has
the advantage of running as service in the background and so on.
But, the official prerelease ersion got me only 6.4 Megakey/sec, while the
windows client got me 8 MK/sec. What a diff for the same PC.
Something is strange there...

distributed-net on amd64?

2005-05-24 Thread Lars Schimmer
Hi!

I just installed debian pure64 on 2 machines today :-)
While that I found some missing debs on ftp.de.debian.org, but another
mirror did the job well.

Now I' m missing a distributed-net .deb for amd64, anyone knows anything
about that?

Btw, Debian-amd64 was full running in 3h (getting all over 1MBit DSL),
far better than Windows XP x64 :-)

So I linked the nvidia driver fom lib64 to lib and restart kdm, and wit

Kinda problematic for newbies.

Do NOT use nvidia's installer. Use Debian's installer and things just
 work. Nvidia's installer assumes a redhat'ish filesystem which isn't
 how debian does things.

Running 3rd party installers is a bad habit from windows that should be
 exterminated.

So there IS a nvidia package for debian?
Til yet there was only a nvidia package on debian with NO 3d support on 32bit,
as for I always took the nvidia installer and used 3d support.
If there is that debian package and it installs the full nvidia features, it is
indeed nice and useful.
