Hi,
today I tried another attempt to solve the problem. No new grub package
was available, but i tried to purge all grub packages, deleted all in
/boot except the kernel images and reinstalled grub. Did not work for
me. All of the bugs you wrote above refered to dmsetup/dmraid packages.
I'm using mdadm and never used dmsetup on this machine.

Another hint was http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=409073
which refered to a gpt problem with grub2. Is there a change in debian
using gpt?

I don't think it is a paper jam.

I could mess around with this but I am very busy.

So very busy that it is cheaper in time and money to simply buy a new printer

The printer cost me $100 or so.

If I spent e.g. $1000 on a printer solely with the intent of finding one that
is very reliable that Lenny will drive well and smell malfunctions and
diagnose what they are really well (better still the printer itself has a
display on it that gives copious details of any error on it indepedently of the
operating system that is driving it that anyone could understand quickly), what
printer would you recommend?

Hi Michael,

I bought a Brothzer HL5270DN printer 2 years ago. Its a network
connected printer for small workgroups and i installed the printer on
diefferent computers with different OS. There was Debian AMD64 unstable,
Debian i686 stable and also Windows XP.
Sometimes I had some trouble with fonts when the original CUPS-driver
was changed a lot. Another possibility is to use the original Brother
PPD-File which is provided at the Brother support website.

Please dont aks for newer printer models, I have no experience with them.

ipac-ng Replacement for Etch

2007-03-03 Thread Markus Neviadomski
Hello list,

looking for a replacement of ipac-ng, what is missing in debian etch, I
did not found anything. Its a pitty that a small bug, that is not fixed
for a long time, prevents the integration of ipa-ng in the new release
of debian.

Does anyone knows a cmd-tool like ipac-ng for counting traffic on a
machine running Debian Etch?

But you have to use the artsd, right? I don't want to do this :)

Now it seems, that xmms is broken completely. I installed xmms-arts and
xmms-crossfade and both plugins could be selected. Trying to add a new
title to the playlist fails without any message box or in the terminal.

As root, the crossfade-plugin works with an old playlist very nice,
arts-output makes some error, because no artsd is installed.

Purging all xmms pakets, reinstall only xmms, xmms-arts, xmms-crossfade
and deleting the .xmms directory in user-home didn't solve the problem.
The plugins are available, but creating a playlist failed without any
message.

I have to wait for an upgraded package, i think.

XMMS: No output plugins specified

2006-07-28 Thread Markus Neviadomski
Hi,

after apt-get update && apt-get upgrade on my amd64-box (debian
unstable), xmms doesn't work. After startup and pressing play in xmms,
the following message appears: "no output plugins specified".

Looking in the Settings-panel, the select-box for the output is empty. I
searched the debian packages for any output-plugins, but I found nothing
for alsa or so on.

I'm using kernel 2.6.14-1-amd64-k8 with alsa, xmms has version 1.2.10
now and the sounchip is a ac97-chip from realtek (ALC850).

Any ideas?

Hi Gudjon,

I've seen the schroot-package during the last upgrade, but i spent no
time to read the man-page for this tool. Now, after reading, I think
this is much better than the old dchroot command.

I takes some minutes to set it up, because my matlab-installation also
won't work with my old dchroot.

Thanks a lot,
Markus

Change in do_chroot script from am64 howto

2006-06-19 Thread Markus Neviadomski
Hi,

after upgrading my amd64/unstable with ia32-chroot(also unstable) the
chroot-script from
https://alioth.debian.org/docman/view.php/30192/21/debian-amd64-howto.html#id272095
doesn't work. I used it for calling OpenOffice from outside the chroot.

I'm not shure whether the change was in the way the script interprets
the calling parameter or the changes where made in chroot environment.

After the upgrade the script passes the following command to the chroot
 but only this command works:

Starting OpenOffice without any parameter wasn't affected.

Would anybody approve this behavior? In the following is the script with
the changes I made:

<<<<
#!/bin/sh
ARGS=""
for i in "$@" ; do
ARGS="$ARGS$i"
done
echo "`basename $0`" "$ARGS"

exec dchroot -c ia32 -d -q "`basename $0`" "$ARGS"

Hi,

have a look at top a while, when the server is working, for example
delivering a website or something other. And, talk about the servers you
are running: webserver, gameserver, databases? It is very difficult to
help you without any information.

top itself is running, the swap-deamon, init-process is also running
during your machine is up.

> Is there any other way to figure out what that other process might be?

No, top should show all processes, look for a while to it. In my
opinion, the kswapd is running too often, but i doen't know what your
machine is working for.

There is detailed description in the amd64-howto found hier:
http://alioth.debian.org/docman/view.php/30192/21/debian-amd64-howto.html#id271960

Try this out with a script that passes the complete filename with the
correct syntax to chroot. Mounting the directory where the file exists
into the chroot is very important. Otherwise you got a "file not found"
error

This is a nicy trick ;)

To view any connected usb-devices and there status, there is a
perl-script available her: http://www.linux-usb.org/usbtree
It parses the /proc/bus/usb/devices file and prints a nice overview:

Hi,

just today i get such a chroot running from this mirror without any
problems. Are you shure, there is enough space left on device?
Otherwise, try to wget the missing packages to test the download.

I installed successfully on single-processor machine with kernel
