RE: Poweredge with SAS6/ir

2009-07-29 Thread ozz lioi
I have been digging further into this and the main issue, turns out, has to
do with the way grub sees the disks I'm afraid.
I do not have a lot of experience in installs, so I will need assistance on
what to do.
I have managed to boot all the way to busybox and I have a command prompt
with initramfs.
What can I do to map the proper boot device?

It's a Dell PowerEdge 2950. The module is the SAS6/ir.
I have managed to get into the OS which now leaves me thinking the problem
may lie somewhere else.
I did manage that by hitting 'Utility mode' (which I even consulted with
Dell and should not happen as it is a utility by Dell) during bootup, I
will try to get a transcript of lspci info as I cannot get the machine to
connect or even to change any files as the OS seems to not respond to the
changes.
The previous OS running there was CentOS 5 (I believe, too late to check).
I did download Ubuntu to see what drivers it uses but no longer sure if it's
a driver issue.
The install does see the virtual disk, but after restarting I have to either
boot into a mangled OS without much I can do so far or watch the cursor
blink at an empty line after the remote access configuration prompt.
I think there is possibly a grub issue... Don't know!

Driver support is almost certainly going to be identical between amd64
and i386.

It may be that your hardware simply does not work with linux right now,
or that you need a newer kernel. Lenny uses 2.6.26, and I certainly have
needed a newer kernel for many of the machines we are getting at work now.
2.6.29 seems to work on most of them.

So to some extent you can try a daily build of the debian installer to
see if it can detect the devices properly, but you would essentially
have to install unstable to get a newer kernel.

So what kind of machine is it? What model?

Poweredge with SAS6/ir

2009-07-27 Thread ozz lioi
I'm having a great deal of difficulty understanding what the problem is so
far.

The situation is this:

I could boot from DVD and install the OS, then it would not load.

In the boot up process if I choose the F10 option (Utility Mode) then it
boots the OS with the normal mode + single mode option.

I can login to the normal option but nothing works, I cannot even start
networking, similarly to single mode.

I have tried to install Lenny AMD64 and now I will try the i386.

Please advise!

Try this one:

http://tinyplanet.ca/~lsorense/amd64/sarge-amd64-2.6.12-netinst.iso

(~90 meg download).

I used it for my Dual-Opteron. Works great.

And thanks again to Len Sorensen for making this available to us.

I can't comment on the 9550, but I'm using a 3Ware 9500 on a
dual-Opteron 250 setup, and it works fine with 4x400Gb as hardware
RAID5 (1.2TB).

I used the 2.6.12 kernel for the install (I did a tftp install as the
box has no CD drive - it's a 1U rackmount server with all drive bays
full).

The installer saw it as a single 1.2TB drive.

Even Linus himself recently stated that people should use KDE rather

Hi Homer - good to see you on the list.

I recommend this install image:

http://tinyplanet.ca/~lsorense/amd64/sarge-amd64-2.6.12-netinst.iso

(~90 meg download)

(Kudos to Len Sorensen for a great iso)

I used it myself on my dual-Opteron last week.

It's Sarge, but with the 2.6.12 kernel. If you install in expert mode
then it will give you the option for testing.

The only issue I've seen with it so far was on a scsi system - it did
not recognize the scsi controller, so we had to install with the
regular Sarge. Unfortunately I have a memory like a sieve, and cannot
remember what controller it was - I'll check when I get back tomorrow.

Do you allow the installer to continue anyway? I had to, and then
finish setting up networking after the reboot.

What does ifconfig show?

I'd check the output of ifconfig.

Also (and I know this may sound silly) check to make sure that the
network cable is plugged into the right NIC. If you have three NICs
then they may not be getting assigned the way you think. Mine swapped
over after installing X/KDE for some reason.

It would help greatly if you could give us some error messages to chew
on.

I just set up my new box (Tyan K8WE dual-Opteron246) using Len
Sorensen's modified Sarge installer with the 2.6.12 kernel (Thanks,
Len!). Initially my NICs were not detected either - all it found was
the FireWire networking, which I don't use. I continued anyway, and on
reboot the NICs were found and the forcedeth driver loaded. However, I
did have to add them to /etc/network/interfaces and then
run /etc/init.d/networking stop|start to get them running properly.

I've since upgraded to 2.6.14-2 to get around the Opteron SMP issues.

Note - after installing X/KDE, my NICs swapped over (!).

The only issue I have with it now is my graphics card (EVGA GeForce
6600GT PCI-E) but looking at the posts over the last few days it
appears I'm not alone there (it needs the nVidia 7714 driver)...

For the time being I'm using the VESA driver (the nv driver causes
screen corruption after a few minutes of use) but it's not really a big
issue for me, as I just need to get a lot of (mainly text) on the screen
at once - FPS is unimportant.

I use ext3, and love it.

I used to use ReiserFS (and swore by it), but got BADLY burned a couple

a totally trashed partition by the Reiser tools, and I ended up losing
the entire partition) and haven't touched it since.

I use the Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9 mainboard with the 3000+ CPU. Everything
works on the mainboard. The on-board NIC works with the forcedeth
driver, and I got on-board sound working by following the advice of the

I can highly recommend this mainboard.

Re: AMD64 / Debian / Sound - FIXED!!!!!

2005-03-09 Thread Ozz

First of all, a very deep and sincere THANK YOU! to all who provided
input to this issue.

OK, let's give that a try...

First, make sure all is current:

Athlon64:/# apt-get update && apt-get upgrade -s

No errors but a few updates, so:

Athlon64:/# apt-get upgrade && apt-get clean

Looks good so far.

Now for the kernel:

[Check apt-cache for latest version and find 2.6.10-9, so installing
that...]

Athlon64:/# apt-get install kernel-image-2.6.10-9-amd64-k8
kernel-source-2.6.10 kernel-doc-2.6.10 -s

No errors, so let's do The Real Thing:

Athlon64:/# apt-get install kernel-image-2.6.10-9-amd64-k8
kernel-source-2.6.10 kernel-doc-2.6.10

and reboot...

A crapload of boot error messages, but alsa appears to load OK, although
my USB cordless mouse has gone. Quick halt and add USB->PS/2 converter
and restart...

Another crapload of startup errors, but nothing that looks too serious
that it can't wait and I have my rodent back; so let's try some music...

(a few minutes of tinkering with mixer and other XMMS settings later)

SUCCESS

Thanks again to all who provided input, and especially to Mr. Sorensen
for the key info that enabled me to finally enjoy my new system to it's
fullest!

Regards,
Ozz.

Aha! I'm betting that's the problem ;-D

Athlon64:/proc/asound# modinfo snd-intel8x0|grep -i 10de

alias: pci:v10DEd01B1sv*sd*bc*sc*i*
Athlon64:/proc/asound#

So, it looks like the problem is that my sound card is not being
detected.

How would I get Debian to detect the sound card?

Ozz.

OK, I added snd-intel8x0 to /etc/modules:

Modconf did not list either of those drivers.

Where would I find them?

AMD64 / Debian / Sound

2005-03-08 Thread Ozz

Hi Guys.

I'm trying to get the sound working on my new Debian64 install.

The mainboard is a Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9 using the nForce4 chipset.

The user manual lists the sound as ALC850 CODEC

The mainboard BIOS lists it as AC97.

Now, Debian no longer includes sndconfig in sarge or sid, so I'm SOL
there.

I used modconf to try and load the AC97 driver. Modconf appeared to
load it OK, but I still have no sound.

Everything else is working fine.

I've included the output of lsmod to the end of this post.

Any ideas?

Regards,
Ozz.
