Also, you may want to verify that your kernel is
allowing icmp packets:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/proc/sys/net/ipv4# cat
icmp_echo_ignore_all

If you see the number 1, icmp packets (i.e., ping)
will be ignored. You can change it with this command:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/proc/sys/net/ipv4# echo "0" >
icmp_echo_ignore_all

Don't forget Debian's own documentation, which is
excellent:

  http://www.debian.org/doc/
  http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/installmanual
  http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/reference/
  http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-faq/

Also, if you're relatively new to linux you should
also check out the linux documentation project:

You might try booting from a live CD (e.g.,
www.knoppix.net). If X comes up okay, then you can
inspect the configuration file(s) (e.g., xorg.conf) to
get some clues as to what's amiss with your own
installation.

I wish I would have thought of it - LVM was staring me in the face last night!
Sounds like RAID-10 and LVM/RAID-1 are functionally equivalent. I didn't know
LVM did stripping. I'm wondering now what the performance difference might be
if any.

That sounds like what I would like to do. So the original installation gets
removed once the RAID-10 install is done correct? I'm wondering about the
size of the initial installation partition. I generally make /boot about
200Meg. Do you think that would be enough for a minimal or should I go
bigger?

I'll try setting up the disks as you suggest, then run the install.
I did manage to get the raid10 module loaded during the install,
but the option for RAID-10 would not show up in the installer.
I'll try creating the RAID-10 array after loading the module also.
I'm getting the feeling here already that this is probably
something I ought not to mess with. This is going to be a
production machine, so I may end up with a RAID-1 for /boot
and /, then run RAID-10 for shared data. I suppose that
would be a reasonable solution.

I've got some time to mess with it for a while and I'll post
back the results.

scott

install Etch with raid level 10

2007-09-26 Thread Scott Lair

I tried to install Etch on AMD64 using raid level 10.
After I partitioned the drives, I went to create the
md devices and could only choose from raid levels
0,1 or 5. Should I be able to install with level 10?
I tried the latest netinst.iso and the cdrom install
disk 1 with the same results.

I'm currently using Debian on my 2GHz AMD64 32++ and
1Gb RAM, and run vmware server (www.vmware.com) for
full virtualization. It allows me to create a virtual
machine, on which I installed DOS and Win2000 so I can
teach 8086 assembly language without having to reboot.
The vmware site has the vmware player and vmware
server for free download (the player just plays
preconfigured virtual machines, whereas with the
server you can create your own). It's very simple to
install and use, and it's pretty amazing to see
Windows boot up in linux. Heck, you can even play
around with the virtual BIOS settings!

I've tried installing via apt-get, but get a problem with required python
version being higher than allowed by my hplj printer driver or by python-qt3
(both require python <2.4 but openoffice.org causes installation of python

Greetings Alexander:

My thunderbird works perfectly on AMD64 and my library difference
between my system and the bug report exactly match this report from
Andreas, with the exception that I don't have the German dictionaries
installed.

Good luck.

Greetings:

In my experience, what any random motherboard will do in the event of a
missing drive is completely unpredictable. Every manufacturer is
different, and different boards from the same manufacturer can behave
differently. Lately, with SATA drives, it seems that it is more common
for the drive's ID to be determined by which connector on the
motherboard (or add-on controller) it is plugged into. When we lose sda
on our HP servers, sdb remains sdb.

In any event, we've found grub boot floppies or boot USB sticks to be
invaluable. You boot from that and get a full grub console, where you
can direct the loader to boot from any available drive in the machine
and pass whatever root disk parameters are appropriate.

Always test you configuration before you put it into production.
Spending 20 minutes pulling sda from the machine and booting it up to
see what happens will tell you everything that you need to know.

Greetings:

Our setup here is a little different than yours, but it should work the
same. We are doing software RAID1 across two SATA drives.

The controllers that we have (low-end HP hardware) control which drive
appears where in the chain. The drive plugged into connector 0 is sda
and the drive plugged into connector 1 is sdb. When we lose sda, sdb
stays sdb.

Additionally, mdadm can tell which drive is which. I'm not sure if its
writing some identifying information onto the drive or what, but each
disk seems to know its place in the configuration.

One thing that you are going to want to make sure that you do is to use
the grub console to place an MBR onto each of the drives in the array,
not just the first one. Otherwise, if you remove drive sda, the machine
will look for an MBR from sdb, not find one, and not boot.

Our servers do not have hot-swappable drives, so we have something of a
problem when we lose sda. We have to shut down the box to replace the
drive, but then the replacement sda drive is blank, and the controller
can't boot from it. Some of the machines have BIOSes that will let you
pick which drive to boot from, others require a grub boot floppy or USB
stick from which you can direct the machine to boot from sdb. Check
your BIOS before disaster strikes.

Nothing replaces some good testing. Before you place the box into
production, play with it. Shut it down, pull sda, and boot it up. See
what happens. Then you'll know exactly what steps are required in the
event of a failure, and when it happens with real data on the box,
you'll know what to do. You might even document the required recovery
steps, print them out, and attach them to the machine. The next person
who has to maintain the box will thank you.

Greetings:

I can't see how this would work. Grub is passing your root string to
the kernel when it loads and boots the kernel. Since nothing else is
running (especially udev), the only namespace that the kernel has for
devices is its own. Until the udev daemons get started, there is no
/dev/sata1. Something of a chicken and egg problem.

Since the answer to all booting chicken and egg problems is the initrd,
it should be possible to do what you want using that. You would have to
have enough of a system to get udev running on your initrd, then you
could transfer the your root device to /dev/sata1. I've seen that basic
process used to keep the root filesystem encrypted on the hard drive
before. If you search for "encrypted root filesystem" you should get
some information, and you might be able to adapt that hack to what you
are trying to accomplish.

Good luck.

Greetings:

Gnome has an auto-mounter that works with the hotplug system to pick up
and mount CDs, USB-Sticks, and the like. Perhaps that is picking up the
drive and mounting it for you. It picks up my /dev/sdc and mounts it
without any intervention on the part of my /etc/fstab file.

Good luck.

<..snip..>

Aptitude will upgrade a kernel of the same revision in place (it will
replace 2.6.16-18 with 2.6.16-19) but when the kernel version is
upgraded (2.6.16 to 2.6.17), it adds the new kernel to the existing
kernel. This is so that if you have problems with the new kernel, you
still have a working kernel on your box that you can go back to. If you
are using any modules that are not part of the kernel (nvidia, ati,
etc.) you will have to rebuild those with your new kernel also. Once
you have completed the transition to your new kernel, you have to
manually remove the previous one if you don't want it on your box any more.

I was only following the steps outlined by Len at
(http://tinyplanet.ca/~lsorense/debian/debian-nvidia-dri-howto.txt)

However, I see your point, after step #5 it doesn't
look like anything's being recompiled. So I checked
with dpkg to see what nvidia stuff is currently on the
system:

==

I assume this means the nvidia-glx-dev package has
been installed but not unpacked? Also, what is the
current status of the nvidia-glx-legacy package? (I've
looked in the man pages for dpkg, dselect, aptitude,
etc. and haven't been successful in finding out
precisely what these state flags mean...)

Attempting to purge nvidia-glx-dev from the system
produces this:

==
benito:~# apt-get --purge remove nvidia-glx-dev
Reading package lists... Done

You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct
these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies.

This is essentially the same behavior when I was
trying to install nvidia-glx-dev, except now the
conflicting package appears to be nvidia-glx-legacy.
If I attempting to purge nvidia-glx-legacy from the
system I'm told it's not installed, however its state
flags from dpkg have changed from "rc" to "pc".

I confess, I'm a bit lost here :) ! Are my package
states just messed up, and/or am I doing something
wrong?

Problem Installing nvidia-glx to unstable the Debian Way

2006-07-02 Thread Scott Edwards
Hello All,

I'm trying to get my nvidia GeForce 6600 PCIe up and
running for my Athlon64 system, and I'm running into a
problem... I found Len Sorensen's instructions on how
to do this "The Debian Way" at
http://tinyplanet.ca/~lsorense/debian/debian-nvidia-dri-howto.txt.
I'm running a custom built 2.6.17.1 kernel and managed
to execute the module-assistant steps okay. When I

got:

I don't really understand what the problem is with

May as well try this

# alias gcc="gcc-4.1"

I had the same issue - it is because gnome and kde are not yet complete in
etch. Consequently, I did the etch install, then did

aptitude -t stable install kde

(should be the same principle for gnome), and ended up with a working (but
older!) kde on an installation that is fundamentally etch.

Beware, however, that this would mean you may have some issues with things
like KOffice (older version), OpenOffice.org (only version I can get to work
is experimental, and then only Writer, but supposedly there is a chroot 32bit
version that works - I just found dead links), and AbiWord (crashes for me -
and others have put this on the bug report - 100% of the time when you click
the "Print" button).

dmesg:

input: PC Speaker as /class/input/input2
ACPI: PCI Interrupt :00:14.5[B] -> Link [LNKB] -> GSI 10 (level, low) ->

From lshw id 14.5 is the sound card:

I notice from these same three locations (dmesg, kern.log and lshw) that
ndiswrapper is also using irq:10. Maybe its the (very old) DOS memories, but
could that be causing the problem?

I noted the entry in the dmesg output saying "If a device doesn't work, try

OK, I checked that and can see what looks like evidence of the problem:

0 [IXP]: ATIIXP - ATI IXP
ATI IXP rev 2 with unknown codec at 0xc0003400, irq 10
1 [Modem ]: ATIIXP-MODEM - ATI IXP Modem
ATI IXP Modem rev 2 at 0xc0003800, irq 10

It seems the sound card is not being recognized properly. I'm not sure how to
tell it what it needs.

Just an aside, another person responded by saying to "use udev, that should
take care of the devices." As far as I can see, udev is being used, but I
don't know enough about udev to know how I can correct this problem.

I don't really need OSS emulation - and would prefer ALSA (which originally
had worked). I only mentioned /dev/dsp because I did receive both errors.

I do not have a preferences file - and did not set preferences in the config
file. I tried that before, but was having dependency issues. Now I keep both
stable and testing in sources.list and use the -t flag to determine what I
want to install.

Mostly, I use -t stable for kde and related things, and go with etch for
system utilities, etc.

I can't provide a definitive answer, but as far as I can tell, the sarge

I added the corresponding sarge repositories

## sarge
deb http://mirror.espri.arizona.edu/debian-amd64/debian/ sarge main non-free
contrib
deb-src http://mirror.espri.arizona.edu/debian-amd64/debian/ sarge main

and then did

sudo apt-get update
sudo aptitude install -t stable kde

and got a working kde from the sarge distro if that is any help.

ndiswrapper and sound - etch

2006-05-30 Thread Scott Thomas
Hello all,

Recently bought a Compaq laptop (V2630US) with AMD Turion 64. I've been using
32-bit Linux for quite some time (1996), but, like most, I suppose, this
64-bit is a new adventure.

I installed Testing from the CD (netinstall - boot params "noapic nolapic")
via the ethernet connection, and all HW was properly detected and set up
except (as expected) the Broadcom 4318 wifi card. Sound worked perfectly
(lspci reports audio is: :00:14.5 Multimedia audio controller: ATI
Technologies Inc IXP SB400 AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02)).

I installed and compiled ndiswrapper 1.16, and the WinXP64 driver and the
Broadcom worked perfectly. Unfortunately, the sound stopped working
immediately. The error was no device found (looking for /dev/audio
and/or /dev/dsp. I created /dev/audio and now it no longer complains about
the device, but still doesn't have sound.

Any help greatly appreciated...

Scott

Greetings:

I do that with my machine (using grub rather than lilo, though) without
any major problems. The only problem that I've run into has to do with
having both the 32-bit and 64-bit version of a program installed.
Sometimes the two versions have different ideas about configuration
files and data file formats that it stores in /home. If the program has
a conversion process for converting data files from 32-bit to 64-bit,
then you will have problems if you try to run both versions on your machine.

Without console access to the machine, lilo or grub is going to be
something of a moot point because you are going to have to get the
configuration correct the first time or you are completely out of luck.
The nice thing about grub is that it has a console at boot where you
can modify the booting kernel and the parameters, which is nice if you
got you /boot/grub/menu.lst wrong in some way. But without a console,
you only get what's in your menu.lst - so if that's wrong it won't boot.

What you're saying sounds do-able, but you'll have to get everything
completely right the first time. You're assuming that your chrooted
build on /dev/sdb will boot. In the situation you're talking about, you
don't really need an MBR on /dev/sdb. The only reason you would need an
MBR on /dev/sdb would be if /dev/sda had a failure. For what you are
describing, you need a properly set up MBR on /dev/sda which defaults to
booting your root partition on /dev/sdb?.

On a side note, if this is an important machine to you, you might to
check out some sort of lights-out remote access which would get you
remote access to the machine's console. It's a real life-saver when you
can't get to the machine easily.

Good luck.

You don't say what boot loader you're using, but if you are using grub,
you can simply install the MBR to the second disk using the grub terminal.

Run grub, then from the grub prompt (and assuming your boot partition is
the first partition on the disk):

MBR on the first disk:

grub> root (hd0,0)
grub> setup (hd0)

MBR on the second disk:

grub> root (hd1,0)
grub> setup (hd1)

And then you're done:

grub> quit

Grub supports tab completion, so if you put in

grub> root (hd

and hit the tab key, it will show the valid drive numbers. It will do
the same for the partitions if you hit tab after:

grub> root (hd1,

to help you pick the correct partition. Remember, all numbers are
zero-origin, so if the parition holding /boot is /dev/sda1, its
partition number will be 0 in grub.

And, as always, a bootable grub disk as a safety measure is highly
recommended.

Re: Re-install grub.

2006-01-25 Thread Scott Edwards

I recently ran the amd64 net install on my Win2000
system (I'd already set aside disk space for the linux
installation). I was also a bit nervous about having
Debian overwrite the MBR (although it's never given me
any problems in the past), so when I was asked to
install grub I declined, I left the MBR untouched.
Then I created a grub floppy
(http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/html_node/Creating-a-GRUB-boot-floppy.html#Creating-a-GRUB-boot-floppy)
and tested my booting situation with that.

Once I felt comfortable that everything looked okay, I
went ahead and installed grub to the MBR "natively"
After that everything worked just fine.

Grub's pretty darn flexible, it's a good idea to
familiarize yourself with how to use it to boot your
system. Here's a link to a guy who's using it to boot
over 100 operating systems on his machine:

http://www.justlinux.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=143973

What he's done there can provide you with some good
examples. (The grub documentation is also helpful.)

Btw, I also saved the boot records on my drive using
"dd" and put them in a safe place, both before and
after the linux install so I can easily restore them,
just for peace of mind!

Pretty sure that the original client and bittornado include
btdownloadcurses (possibly called btdownloadcurses.py) which takes a
directory name to search for torrents on startup and then manages
those torrents. Upload capping and everything should work.

Re: Install iso images on cdimage.debian.org

2005-05-13 Thread Scott Ransom
FYI, the 12 May net-install .iso doesn't seem to contain a kernel-image
to install. The installer dies during the installation of the
base-system because of this.

Does it rip CDs well with cdparanoia? I was getting loads of jitter
under 2.6.8 but it magically disappeared upon transition to 2.6.11.
This is on topic because you stated that the install was nearly
fully-functional.

Re: dpkg SEGFAULT with upgrade using gcc-3.4 (or 4.0) repos

2005-03-16 Thread Scott Ransom
Javier Kohen just asked (I'm not subscribedto this list anymore, so I
saw his post on google news) what version of libc6 I'm using. I
_think_ (since dpkg is not allowing me to check) that I'm using
libc6_2.3.2.ds1-20.0.0.2.gcc4_amd64.deb, although
libc6_2.3.2.ds1-20.0.0.3.gcc4_amd64.deb was in the process of being
installed (I'm not sure if it was unpacked yet or not).

And as far as backtracing the dpkg SEGFAULT in gdb, I had tried that,
but as he mentioned, since there are no debugging symbols, there is
nothing but memory addresses.

dpkg SEGFAULT with upgrade using gcc-3.4 (or 4.0) repos

2005-03-16 Thread Scott Ransom
Hello all,

So I've just gotten bit by a SEGFAULT during a dpkg upgrade
using the 3.4 (or I guess gcc-4.0 archive). This occurred
after --force'ing the /usr/lib64 issue with the libc6 upgrade.
The messages can be found below. Any suggestions about how to
fix this?

Thanks a bunch,

Have you ever used apt-listchanges? Sound like just what you
are looking for.

Scott

Package: apt-listchanges
Version: 2.57
Priority: optional
Section: utils
Maintainer: Matt Zimmerman <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Depends: python (>= 2.3), apt (>= 0.5.3), python-apt, debconf,
ucf (>= 0.28), debianutils (>= 2.0.2)
Suggests: x-terminal-emulator, www-browser

Size: 47688
MD5sum: a45613f74fe271afb4e6e8f10e09627e
Description: Display change history from .deb archives
apt-listchanges is a tool to show what has been changed in a
new version of a Debian package, as compared to the version
currently installed on the system. It does this by extracting
the relevant entries from the Debian changelog file, and the
NEWS.Debian file. . It can be run on several .deb archives at
a time to get a list of all of the changes that would be
effected by installing or upgrading a group of packages. It
can be configured to do this automatically during upgrades
 using apt.

python2.3 missing a key lib

2004-12-13 Thread Scott Ransom
Hello All,

In the 3.4 archive python2.3 is missing a key library (readline.so):

Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
>>> import readline

ImportError: No module named readline

Note that the module
/usr/lib/python2.3/lib-dynload/readline.so

_is_ there in the i386 version of the package.

Should this be listed as a bug in the python2.3 package itself?

Scott

PS: Thanks for all of your hard work! Things are working amazingly well!
