Is it possible to compile the module on a AMD64 system? Where can I apt-get the packages mentioned in howto above for AMD64? I have reported here my problems with this setup and I am considering replacing this scsi card with one that will do the job without errors. what scsi card is recommended to work for this arch ? I don't need blinding speed since the tape drive at best will due 80 MB/s burst speed. I just need one that will work without error. What are other Debian/Amd64 scsi users using ? I have been using a LSI U160 card and the SYM53C8XX drivers for over a year with my Fujitsu scsi drive (68 pin). At first it would take 5-24 attempts to open Firefox before I could evenually get it open. I would have to keep killing it with pkill firefox-bin before the next attempt. I finally discovered that if I opened Mozilla up first then I would have a better chance of opening firefox afterwards. For example, my machine has been up for 3 days without a reboot and hence, firefox has been open for a while. I closed firefox and tried to reopen it. Nothing happened until I opened Mozilla and then Firefox opened immediately! I had this similar problem because firefox can not connect to the xserver. http://lists.debian.org/debian-amd64/2005/08/msg00489.html So you might want to test it by running xhost + then start firefox. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Re: problems with custom kernel: no init?
On 04:58 Mon 24 Oct , Sam Quigley wrote: Hi, I'm making the transition back to Debian after a few years using Gentoo, and I'm having a problem getting my custom-built kernel to boot. Basically, the problem is that with my custom kernels (2.6.13.4 and 2.6.13-ck8), everything goes fine until the point where init is supposed to take over -- at that point, nothing happens. No error message, no panic, no nothing. The last few things displayed onscreen are some messages about my mouse being recognized, and that /selinux/ wasn't found -- which are the same as the messages I get when booting (successfully) with a Debian stock kernel. Looking at the dmesg from your Debian kernel 2.6.12-1-amd64-k8 shows: devfs: 2004-01-31 Richard Gooch ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) devfs: boot_options: 0x0 The new custom kernel config does not have DEVFS (its deprecated) and since you were using Gentoo you probably used UDEV. In any case its a good idea to use UDEV for creating /dev nodes. So boot the Debian kernel and apt-get install udev. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Re: Intel EM64T vs. Opteron
On 00:06 Fri 14 Oct , mike wrote: Hi all, I recently (re-)subscribed to the mailing list, I have a couple specific questions, and can't seem to find any good data about it, and would like to tap people who probably have some real-world experience with it. First off, I am a user of Debian-amd64 right now - and I love it. I run it on Opterons. It screams. I have a chance soon to switch out my servers, and going the Intel route I would be able to get a lot more bang for my buck. The website says that EM64T works fine with Debian-amd64, I just want to make sure there's no gotchas, compared to using it on an Opteron-based system. Basically, I'd be looking at an Intel 830D (3.0ghz, dual-core, EM64T) processor-based system, with 1 gig of ram and SATA HD vs. a single-core Opteron 1.8ghz (or a dual-processor NOT dual-core Opteron 1.8ghz) system, same HD and same RAM. Has anyone had the opportunity to benchmark this, or have any real experience with changing the underlying platform? I can build an 830D based system with dual-cores for cheaper than a single-core Opteron box right now (I have some discounts) but if the performance isn't as good as it seems it should be, or there's some odd things that must be done to get EM64T to work properly under Debian-amd64, I'd like to know that before committing to the hardware choice :) Just a heads up about the big drop in Opteron pricing: http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=26927 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
