Is it possible to compile the module on a AMD64 system? Where can I apt-get
the packages mentioned in howto above for AMD64?

I got the sources for the latest nvidia-graphics-drivers 1.0.8174 from:

http://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/non-free/n/nvidia-graphics-drivers/

They compile on my amd64 and work OK with the latest kernel.

Are the debian amd64-k8-smp kernels also subject to this problem?

This is a kernel problem with SMP having unsynced TSC's running at

needed to boot with pci=noacpi and clock=pmtmr to solve the 'lost

A Debian kernel won't change anything. assuming you have a similar config
(e.g. HPET_TIMER=y PM_TIMER=y). You may want to post this on the LKML.

This must be specific to some chipsets as I do not have this problem on
my SMP system running Debian kernel 2.6.12-whatever.

This shows up when running dual cpu's under heavy load (compiling,
encoding etc) for an extended time.

what scsi card is recommended to work for this arch ? I don't need
blinding speed since the tape drive at best will due 80 MB/s burst

What are other Debian/Amd64 scsi users using ?

I have been using a LSI U160 card and the SYM53C8XX drivers for over a
year with my Fujitsu scsi drive (68 pin). Works good and card is
inexpensive.

up first then I would have a better
chance of opening firefox afterwards. For example, my machine has been
up for 3 days without a reboot
and hence, firefox has been open for a while. I closed firefox and
tried to reopen it. Nothing happened
until I opened Mozilla and then Firefox opened immediately!

I had this similar problem because firefox can not connect to the
xserver.

http://lists.debian.org/debian-amd64/2005/08/msg00489.html

So you might want to test it by running xhost + then start firefox.

You might have better luck with this.

 Hi,

 problem
is that with my custom kernels (2.6.13.4 and 2.6.13-ck8), everything goes fine
until the point where init is supposed to take over -- at that point, nothing
happens. No error message, no panic, no nothing. The last few things
 displayed
onscreen are some messages about my mouse being recognized, and that /selinux/
wasn't found -- which are the same as the messages I get when booting
(successfully) with a Debian stock kernel.

Looking at the dmesg from your Debian kernel 2.6.12-1-amd64-k8 shows:

devfs: 2004-01-31 Richard Gooch ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
devfs: boot_options: 0x0

The new custom kernel config does not have DEVFS (its deprecated) and
since you were using Gentoo you probably used UDEV. In any case its
a good idea to use UDEV for creating /dev nodes.

So boot the Debian kernel and apt-get install udev.

 Hi all,

I recently (re-)subscribed to the mailing list, I have a couple
specific questions, and can't seem to find any good data about it, and
would like to tap people who probably have some real-world experience
 with it.

First off, I am a user of Debian-amd64 right now - and I love it. I
run it on Opterons. It screams.

I have a chance soon to switch out my servers, and going the Intel
route I would be able to get a lot more bang for my buck. The website
says that EM64T works fine with Debian-amd64, I just want to make sure
there's no gotchas, compared to using it on an Opteron-based system.

 Basically, I'd be looking at an Intel 830D (3.0ghz, dual-core, EM64T)
processor-based system, with 1 gig of ram and SATA HD vs. a
 single-core Opteron 1.8ghz (or a dual-processor NOT dual-core Opteron
1.8ghz) system, same HD and same RAM. Has anyone had the opportunity
to benchmark this, or have any real experience with changing the
underlying platform? I can build an 830D based system with dual-cores
for cheaper than a single-core Opteron box right now (I have some
discounts) but if the performance isn't as good as it seems it should
be, or there's some odd things that must be done to get EM64T to work
properly under Debian-amd64, I'd like to know that before committing
 to the hardware choice :)

Just a heads up about the big drop in Opteron pricing:

The Ralink driver is already the newest. (Hasn't been updated since
 sometime in 2004)

 /etc/network/interfaces --

 ## The loopback network interface ###
 auto lo
 iface lo inet loopback

 ### The primary network interface ###

 #iface eth0 inet dhcp
 iface eth0 inet static

 gateway 220.42.131.254

 ### The wireless network interface ###

 iface ra0 inet dhcp
 wireless-essid YahooBB

 auto ra0

NOTE - Until recently I had only the dhcp line in the above. I
rebooted into windows, did an ipconfig and then entered that exact
information in (above) as static ip information. (Yeah, I know the
netmask is non-standard and the gateway is 131 instead of 128 ... but
that is what the working configuation under windows displayed.)

Also, I added the line auto eth0 to the above, but after a restart
 it has disappeared.

Do you use a router or just a DSL modem?

It is a DSL modem with both wireless and ethernet. No separate router.

Can you manually start your eth0 device? Try (supposing your network is
  192.168.1.0:
  ifconfig ra0 down
  ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.5 up
route add default gw 192.168.1.1 and then ping your router.

 Nope. This didn't work.

 I have tried:
  ifconfig eth0 up
  /etc/init.d/networking restart

I have tried to activate / deactivate either of the eth0 or ra0
interfaces via the GUI. I have rebooted a few times as well. Nothing
has had any effect other than sometimes turning OFF the wireless.

edit your /etc/network/interfaces to use dhcp this will reset
/etc/resolv.conf and get your interfaces up

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

This is a bit unclear. do you have the command or not ?

it should be located in /usr/sbin, so trying it out as user will
 usually fail.

If you find it, try as root :

 # ntpdate pool.ntp.org

This will try to read the time on a server over using UDP with port
 123, so
that port should be opened outbound in your firewall.

if you install the debian package, ntpdate will do this during each
 boot.
So if you are like most people and reboot regularly, your system
 should stay
 quite on time.

 Cheers,

 Ernest.
