Although I am no expert, I have used Linux for 10 years, and Debian has
been my distro of choice since 2000. I have used Nvidia cards for nearly 8
years now, and have been more than happy with their performance. I have
used the proprietary Nvidia drivers exclusively since switching from ATI in
 2001.

My troubles started yesterday when I bought a BFG 8800 GT PCI-Express card
 with 512mb RAM
On this motherboard, I am unable to even have a console running.

The BIOS allows you to switch off the onboard graphics, which I have done,
 of course.

I upgraded to a custom 2.6.24.4 kernel last night, and made sure that I
followed the wiki.debian.org HOWTO closely by disabling the fb_riva,
fb_nvidia and fb_vesa framebuffers. I have enabled SMP options as per the
 CPU.

Every other Nvidia card and motherboard combo would default to console when
I would install a new kernel.

This combination switches to a framebuffer with a Debian logo when using
the G33 integrated graphics, but goes totally blank with the NVidia card
installed. I can't even put it back into console help!

 Suggestions welcomed!

 Cheers
 Mass

Just in case: did you set the bios to use the pci-express port and not the
integreted chipset? Happend to me once: I got a black screnn, don't remember
if it was at the start of grub, but I don't think so, rather at la start of
the kernel.

I guess I am weird in expecting people actually know what hardware they

The chipset in question would be part of the mainboard, or in some cases
an add in controller. Unless you bought a name brand system, you should
ahve a manual for the motherboard, which should identify at least the
brand and model of it. If it is a name brand, then it is possible to
find out based on the exact brand and model of the machine. Do you know
  either of those?

The HD really doesn't have much to do with it, as long as it doesn't
happen to be a model that isn't liked by a particular chipset, but most
of those problems seem to have been resolved by now.

Stable is meant to be just that - stable. So, no new packages are added
to the stable branch, just occasional security updates. I usually run
stable on servers. Sid is the unstable branch. This will always have
the newest software, but you will run across broken packages from time
to time. Usually, issues with broken packages are fixed within a week
 or so.

In between these is etch/testing. I used to run sid/unstable on my
desktop PCs, but I've recently switched to testing, since it is a nice
compromise. I get fairly recent software, but without all of the broken
package issues seen in sid. I believe etch is frozen now (this means
that no new packages are being added, just like stable), and will become
the new stable soon. At that point, Sarge (current stable) will
 become old stable.

I'd recomment using testing or unstable on desktop systems. If
stability is more important, use testing. If the newest versions of
 packages is important, use unstable.

 Hope this helps!

I agree wih his, just adding that sid or unstable needs more upgrade
than etch or testing.

By suggestion of sigi I ran 'dkpg-reconfigure xserver-xorg' which failed.
Next I removed and installed again xserver-xorg, (went through a long
list of boring questions), rebooted and again command line, but this
time it says that KDM has been started (which I didn't ask it to).

Question: how to get graphic interface up and start working?
My own guess: repository (I used ftp.debian.org) is broken -- but I do
not know how to check this (netinstall went smoothly). Other mirrors
known to work well?

  Thanks,
  Victor

I you have kdm installed it will execute normally without you having to *ask*.

OK, try this:

 /etc/init.d/kdm stop;startkde

this kills kdm and starts kde manually.

send a report. the mirror *could* be broken, but until you hear from others
that it is happening, we try whatever we can.

As far as I know, since about last Chrismass, I could not get any
graphical interface on fresh install with Etch on amd64. I went to Sid
for all new install. There seems to be for broken packages. To know wich
one, runs, say apt-get install kde, it will tell you which meta package
is not installable, then run again apt-get install name of package not
instalable, it will tell you with package is not installable in that
metapackage, and so on until you can pinpoint which base package is broken.

I still have problems with my sound card (Realtek ALC850 on Asus K8N-E

snd-intel_8x0, but it doesn't works fine.

On boot time, i noticed a lot of errors coming from udev, telling an
error occurred while look up for group audio (but also nogroup), the
reason is illegal seek (I don't find those lines in log files). Those
errors might the cause of my problem.

I found nothing interesting on the internet, neither in udev bugs.

I aslo tried to downgrade to 0.093-1, but I still got the same errors at

Thanks.

Got two problems similar to yours on two different computer:
On a laptop, touch pad is gone;
On a desktop, soundcard is gone.
Hope next update will clarify the problems

firefox window closes

2006-07-30 Thread Thierry Chatelet
On some click, say, to incruise the number of item you buy in a windows
(from diferent sites), the firefox window closes. Starting firfox in a
terminal window with the option --sync, I got the following message:

open dsp: Device or resource busy
The program 'Gecko' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadShmSeg (invalid shared segment parameter)'.
 (Details: serial 30 error_code 168 request_code 146 minor_code 2)
 (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

Does anyone have something similar?

nor a lib32gtk2.0-0 package.

Or you can install the previous version ol ia32-libs. It has the

Also, in this thread, there are some work-around if you have the latest

Installing OpenOffice.org

dpkg.

1.Installing OpenOffice.org with apt-get.

If you are using debian-unstable (aka sid), debian-testing (aka
etch) or
debian-stable (aka sarge) you do not need to change /etc/apt/sources.list.
If you are using
debian-oldstable (aka Woody or Debian 3.0r4), you have to choose a
mirror of our
debian-packages-mirrors from here and put it
in your
/etc/apt/sources.list..

Ok, we will go ahead with the installation of OpenOffice.org.
Type apt-get update ; apt-get install openoffice.org.
You can do apt-get install openoffice.org openoffice.org-bin
openoffice.org-l10n-en too, this will work! Choose
openoffice.org-l10n-$CC
for your CountryCode, that you want.
OpenOffice.org is now already installed in the debian-package, so, the
only
thing you need to do is just type openoffice into a shell
or
click on the icons at your WindowManager.

Hi,
As of a few hours ago, it was still broken. The only way out is to
install sarge and upgrade to etch, which is a peine, as you have to
change your kernel manually, install lvm manually too. Plus certainly
numerous other things. So, wait and hope, or if you know how to program,
don't wait and help.

I did have a few problems with disc enumeration order differing
between install and sarge, but this was on a fairly complex system
with 4 SATA drives, a couple of genuine scsi drives and a legacy
PATA (ie IDE) drive.

The grub menu written by the installer tried to boot from the wrong
disc (because of said enumeration difference), so I used a grub
floppy and edited the entries on the first boot, and then changed
them permanently.

I should have mentioned in my earlier reply that I think I also had to
correct /etc/fstab which was also written incorrectly by the
installer. I may also have had to correct other configuration files,
but it is a long time ago now. Not difficult once you realize what is
going on, but it would be very tough for anyone new to Linux to sort
out and you definitely have to think about how to get a bootable system.
I think that I needed to mount the target file system with a rescue
disc in order to fix /etc/fstab.

But as several people have said, there should not be a problem with a
single disc.

I have done 2 netinstall around chrismass time, one sarge and one
etch, on 2 boxes with asus A8N-sli MB and one sata hd. Using expert
mode for stable, regular mode for testing. Both went smoothly. I had to
use expert mode on stable to get the ethernet working.

Hi,

I recently bought an Asus A8N-E mobo and AMD64 3800+ CPU. I then
bought RAM, a case, and an ATI 300-based PCI Express 16 video card. I
used netinstall sarge and managed to install 32-bit using the 2.6
kernel (as the 2.4 kernel wouldn't recognize my network card).

...a few days passed, and I realized that I wanted the 64-bit core. I
recompiled the kernel, and then realized there was a 64-bit
distribution, so I downloaded both the testing release (Etch) and the
31r1a netinstalls. 31r1a didn't recognize my onboard network, but Etch
did.

For the 31r1a to recognize your network, if it went as in my case, the
installer shouldhave proposed you with a list of network modules. You
have to choose something call nforether,I believe.

...a few more days passed and I decided to buy 4 SATA II drives in an
attempt to run RAID 0+1. I configured the BIOS and ran the installer,
but the installer sees hda through hdd rather than a single RAID
drive. In subsequent research (including this list archive) it
appears that the BIOS RAID is considered 'inferior' to the software
RAID support in Linux. So, my questions are:

   1) Why is the ASUS BIOS RAID inferior to software RAID on Linux?
   2) Is it possible to install 31r1a instead of the Etch release (I'm
not overly keen on working with Etch, but will do it if it's a better
64-bit option...In the few days I played with 64-bit Etch it seemed to
work well, but I didn't have most of the utilties I need available
from the installer/package manager).

   3) Do I need to flash the BIOS for things to work?
   4) Is ATI 300 support better in Etch?

Thanks,

Hi
First, did the installation process went over to the network and ask you
for a mirror site? Or did it tell you that it had not found a valid

can get chipset and ethernet card type by typing: lspci . Mob type is

First, as a good practice you should answer to the list, not to people
that tried to help you, as the thread may help other people in need.
Then, check that the mirror you choose is a primary mirror ( list here:
http://amd64.debian.net/README.mirrors.html ). Then: it happend to
myself the same problem about 2 weeks ago. I solved it by getting a
newer image of the netinstall. Also if you manage to get on the net
during the install, you may choose ( if you are installing etch) to
continu the install without rebooting the machine, and then choose to
install a desktop system, and if it is your lucky day you may have what
you need. If KDE don't want to install because of broken package, there
a work around, but we will see that if it append. Keep triing

printer. I got the same problem last year, but I did not investigate it,
as I was a my way to get an HP printer, which was recognized as soon as
a pluged it in.

ACPI error AE_NOT_FOUND

2005-12-22 Thread Thierry
First I am please to say that both stable and testing Debian installed
nicely on my Acer Aspire 5002 laptop. Yet I get the following in dmesg:
search_node 810037d54b00 start_node 810037d54b00 return_node

   ACPI-1138: *** Error: Method execution failed [\_SB_.BAT1._BST]
(Node 810037d54980), AE_NOT_FOUND

   ACPI-0352: *** Error: Looking up [Z007] in namespace, AE_NOT_FOUND
With iasl, I decompiled the DSPD, and put Z007 as external, so it should
at least take care of this error message. DSPD recompiled OK. But now
what do I do with this new DSPD. Do I have to include it somehow the
kernel or Here I am at lost. Need help.

Hello,
I installed debian AMD64 on a IBM eServer 325 opteron64 with success.
   Main chipset Amd74xx
   Network subsystem is tg3.
   Scsi is Aic7xxx
I planned to use this server in production phase for PostGreSql database
serveur.

If you would add this to your hardware compatibility list.

Hi,
I succed installing Pure64 in my new box, but the installer gave me a
scare, the bug is so simple:
I used to have in my HD

hda1 XP (NTFS)
hda2 Debian (ext3) (sid/32)
hda3 Swap
...
I decided to overwrite hda1 and using the sid-amd64-netinst.iso ~(Feb 7),
first atemp failed in the step to install grub, failed to install
lilo, the atemps failed till I discover
(using fdisk from my old debian) the partition is was 0C (NTFS), I
changed the ID and check
the fs in the hda1 was OK!

The next atemp was prety smooth as all the other people say,

GREAT WORK!
md5sum
fe18b184891f2b0c493744f5b02dd202 sid-amd64-netinst.iso

I guess the partitioner only sets the partition type when actualy
creating the partition, not when just formating it. That would be a
bug in the partitioner.
Please report this to the Debian BTS (e.g. with reportbug), this
should affect i386 as well.

Yes it does affect i386 as well. I go that yesterday, but did not have
time to look into it.

AMD64 Netinstall

2005-02-01 Thread thierry
Yesterday, I installed amd64/pure64 with no problem.
Unhappy this a few side matter, I decided to reinstall it.
Today, after a clean boot, good connection to debian.inode.at, the
installer is telling me there is no partitionable media in the computer.
So I tried:
To get it empty with debian install floppy
To partion it with the same, and with some Bill Gates staff,
I got the same result with amd64.
Any idea what happend between yesterday and today?

Ok... so, do you think it will work with an older kernel ?
If yes, it should be possible to build an installer with it ?

I have a S4882 Tyan, and the scsi adapter is a NCR (NCR like ?), that is

What messages do you get when trying to load the driver with insmod ?

Are we talking about the normal scsi card itself or does your S4882 has the
credit card sized raid card (S2015S) installed ?

 Good idea...
I installed le scsi module by hand:
   modprobe mptscsi...
and it works: I can see (dmesg) the two hard disks attached.
Then, I go back to the installation menu; I skip the material detection;
I go to disk partitioning... it freezes.
Best regards!
