Yes, but this morning I went through the same exercize
as a sanity-check and now apt wants to remove kde.

I won't be near my home computer for a few days...

I had the exact same problem.  Never used gcc-3.4 before.  A forced 
reinstall of just emacsen-common was enough to fix it.

I got this the other day. I went into aptitude and selected *emacs21-* for 
REINSTALL (with "L"). It redownloaded and reinstalled all my xemacs21 and 
emacs21 packages, and then everything else came through as well.

I don't know how or why it happened, or why this fixed it, though.
