Because of a longstanding bug in the nvidia lib package which creates a
broken .so symlink when it's installed without nvidia-glx-dev as well.

I don't thinks so. I've just compiled it on amd64 without nvidia packages.
Instead of it I installed texinfo.

I did a  build-deps and and dpkg-buildpackage to make sure that I had all the 
build depens, but it seems as Ted said and I confirm that I needs the  
nvidia-glx-dev.

I have built the package and installed with the box updated today. I have run 
again the geomview and it crash in the same place :-(

Wild guess: you forgot about apt-get build-dep geomview.

BTW, the most valuable messages are before configure: exit 1 line.

Well, I certainly can't reproduce it: I don't have access to an amd64
system.  

AMD porters: can someone please test geomview?  If it produces the
error, could you try rebuilding it with the latest toolchain etc?
