Well, I started doing the reply to all thing after I saw a very long
thread in Con Kolivas' mailing list where many people replied to all. I
guess because some of these kernel developers (including the likes of
Ingo Mollnar) weren't subscribed to the list. Probably nobody was
expecting them to spend a significant part of the day browsing all the
mailing lists they might have posted a reply to (or somebody crossposted
their messages), to see if somebody wrote back to them.

In my case, I don't mind the dupe message and I get both in the
Debian-AMD64 folder anyway. However, I'm sure you are right and that for
normal threads it suffices to just send a reply to the list so I'll go
back to doing it that way.

Thanks and sorry for the offtopic thread,

If you reply to all, then all people mentioned in the letter will
recieve a copy.

Now, this mail will arrive twice to you (directly and through the
mailing list) and twice to Javier (directly and through the mailing
list).

I don't think it is wrong, just a little different. I don't
see a big problem, only that some people do not like to have
dual e-mails sent to them, one being the list by CC, the
other being the reply by e-mail. So I just usually e-mail it
to the list only, no need to clutter up their inbox. I guess
it depends on the person, some people like to be notified,
I just assume people who post something to a list are smart
enough to look for replys to their answers on the list.

Thats the same reason I do not CC people even if they
request it in their post. I figure if they are smart enough
to post to the list without being subscribed then they are
smart enough to follow up with google, or Gmane, or their
favorite News Reader. The exception might be a very new user
who has no clue then I might oblige them, at least if you
post to the list you leave the answer to their question for
future people, if I CC them this information might be lost.

That seems to be Thunderbird's default behavior. I never thought it to
be wrong, would you care to tell me why it's so?

Thanks for the link, I remember reading it somewhere about
carbon copy. What I have seen lately is people sending a CC
to the list, after sending an email. Kind of the opposite of
what the lists mentions. I know some mutt.rc configs it
this way. I guess they might need to define spam one of
these days as well, as ones man spam is anothers informed
message.

Far better: a "Reply to list" which only replies to the mailing-list,
and nor bothers the sender more, nor forces you to cut and paste
addresses between boxes.

Don't we have this discussion about once every three or four
months! Thanks for the excellent link, I read it a long time
ago, but forgot the link, was to lazy to search for it on
google. As with most mailing lists, I find that their
usually is a very good reason for the way a list does
something. This is especially true of Debian mailing lists.

Now all we need is a link about the proper usage of carbon
copy, and the polite method that is particular to Debian
lists. You know a polite mailing list faq this could go as
well as top posting, and long personal signature files, as
well as what to leave out, or snip out in long, posts.

Yes, it has.

It is just a habit to click on reply, and as I wrote, other mailing
lists I am into, have this reply (without reply to all) feature.

It was just a suggestion :)
