Well that is good to know. Why is it bad news spread like wildfire and
the good news gets largely ignored. :)

I agree, I'm in the same boat with Asus,
Althought I've been trying some Gigabyte boards recently.
So far so good.

Although, I find that if you're running servers, use boards dedicated
to server operation. They're more expensive, but you get onboard video
with no sound, dual lan, and all that jazz.
Its worth it.

There are issues with Abit mb and Antec True Power Ps. I used to believe
in Antec PS, Antec no longer gets a free pass.

Hmm, wasn't it tyan that recently had some annoucement about a certain
brand (I think it was antec) power supplies being unreliable for running
some of their boards? Just because it _appears_ to work with another
system, doesn't mean it is working within required specifications. Some
systems are pickier than others. Some chipsets don't like some kinds of
ram. Some AMD revisions don't like some types of ram.

Modern PCs are pretty darn complex and run very high frequencies and
very tight timings. It is not unsual for some combinations to not work.
RAM not working in one system, doesn't mean the ram is bad or that the
system is bad. It just might only mean that just that combination is a
bad one.

Len Sorensen

This happen cos most manufacters doesn't respect the standards.
I don't care why the combination doesn't work, i don't want a
motherboard or a power supply, that sometimes doesn't work, like

i don't want a motherboard that work only with windows!
if them sometimes doesn't work, them just don't work!!
anyway, ram was certified by asus like tested and fully compatible.
would u buy a car that work only with a specific brand of gasoline!??
me no.

Hmm, I have used nothing but Asus since 1992, including an A8V, and so
far, I have never had a failure. Makes me actually suspect the power
supply or something else as the cause of damage.

Depends on how reliable the server should be. I would always prefer an AMD
chipset over nVidia when it comes to reliability. Even if you loose a bit of
performance. For socket 939 this will be a problem of course (any AMD 8000
boards available?).

i was unable to found one

Tyan usually is a decent choice - we have several
dual-S940 AMD8000 based 1U-barebones running under high load without
problems.

Why don't you just buy another A8V? Ok, once failed, nerver again perheaps ;)

it's the second asus motherboard, with the same problem, i nomore trust
of asus :#

The Tyan NF4 board should work though sometimes there are problems with
spanking new ethernet controllers (new revs), so I don't know for sure. You
might need a kernel from unstable or backports.org.

i'll use an external ethernet card ;)

Make sure there's enough air flowing over the passive heatsink on the chipset.
SLI is not needed for a server of course ...

i think i'll buy a S2865ANRF

Speaking of, I've been looking into replacing my K8T Master2-FAR system
with a laptop since I've migrated all my server functionality off-site.

 . MSI K8T Master2-FAR
 . Dual Opteron 240's
 . Enermax EG365AX-VE(W) FCA (PSU)
 . 4 x 512MB Buffalo Tech PC2700 (M/N: DD333L-R512/MC)
 . boring case PC case
. NEC dual layer writer (4x)
 . 40gb udma hard drive

If you're interested, drop me an email OFF-LIST with a *serious* offer.
If you want buyer protection, I can also post it as Buy it Now on ebay
-- you'd just need to be ready to click that item link. :)

Cheers and be sure to reply to me off-list,

But the A8V was socket 939? Are you replacing CPU and RAM and
everything else too?

The K8ESLI is socket 939 just like the A8V.

As far as I can tell from reading people's experiences, the
nforce2200/2050 based boards seem to work. Not sure what other socket
940 boards are really around. Hopefully someone that has one can help
with details.
