Do you think that mainboard Tyan Thunder S2877ANDF x 2 Dual Opteron
 under
debian testing/unstable provides adequate raid 1 support without going
 to
expensive 3ware products? I plan to have 2GB ram, but that is not
 enough for

the calculations and frequent access to disk occurs.

Remember that i am based in italy where the market is under rigid
 control by
whom you can easily imagine so that it is not easy to get what one
 wants (for
example main boards). i am happy when i meet a handler who follows my
 linux

 requests, most do not.

raid1 is trivial to do with just the cpu. Writing is simply writing the
same data to both drives (no calculations requried) and reqding is just
comparing the data (or just read one copy). No need for hardware raid
for raid1 at all.

And from what I've heard, Linux's software raid is more reliable and
simple than most hardware RAIDs.

Do a minimal install of i386 (do not select any
additional packages
when the installer asks), edit the /etc/apt/sources.list
to point to

amd64 and do apt-get update apt-get upgrade.

Install additional packages *after* the upgrade.

A system installed with i386 will have a dpkg that ONLY

looks for i386
deb files. It can not upgrade to a different
architecture.

regards. Anyway ... could you test a fresh install with rc3? i have no
machine to do that. Just to make sure. Thanks.

No need to do that, since rc3 _is_ broken as it contains an old kernel
with a different ABI version than the current one: 2.6.8-10-amd64-generic
vs 2.6.8-11-amd64-generic.

The kernel-udebs in the archive will not work with a rc3 installer
kernel, and the problem you described - missing device driver modules
- is exactly the result.

got it. so ... updating the kernel is a solution ... why not to?
check this link
http://lists.debian.org/debian-cd/2005/05/msg2.html

I still wonder you had this problem with an iso from cdimage.debian.org.
How old is the iso image you had this error with?

from last saturday ... 28 may

Kind regards
Frederik Schueler

thanks... it is very important to fix the installer to anyone to be able
to install debian sarge.

regards,
Luis Matos
