Ok problem solved:)
installed from stable xfree, updated to unstable (via dist-upgrade)

Just a problem:
in xfree I had synaptics-driver installed. Now it's seem not good for xorg. And
apt suggests tpconfig. However I cannot disable my touchpad. Can you help me?

Thanks,
Giulio

Did you have xorg from ubuntu installed or from somewhere else?

Debian has no package called xorg-common so that must be something you
screwed up.

Yes, I had some packages from Ubuntu ... I suppose I could manually uninstall the offending package(s)?

I just run

dpkg --purge --force-depends x11-common
apt-get dist-upgrade

to solve it.

The problem is about the xorg referenced in this list a month ago...

I can't get X.org installed ... possibly someone has encountered this?

dist-upgrade gives:

libx11-6: Depends: x11-common (> 4.3.0) but it is not installed

So I try apt-get install x11-common, which reports:

Unpacking x11-common (from .../x11-common_6.8.2.dfsg.1-2_all.deb) ...
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/x11-common_6.8.2.dfsg.1-2_all.deb (--unpack):
trying to overwrite `/etc/X11/Xsession', which is also in package xorg-common

Seems to me I have the wrong packages installed ... thoughts?

Do _not_ manually upgrade any packages. I did a simple dist-upgrade
and got Xorg installed with the exception of xbase-clients and xutils.
If I say "apt-get install xbase-clients xutils" apt will try to remove
(most of) KDE.

Survival commands if you've lost KDE:

apt-get remove libglu1-xorg
apt-get install kdebase ...

Unstable is seriuosly broken because of a series of transitions happening.
That's what unstable is for. Xorg is still at -2, which fails to build on
some achitectures (as expected). After -3 gets uploaded and built on all
architectures, QT 3.3.4 and KDE 3.4.1 (3.4.2?) will follow. Be patient. In
the meantime, put sarge in your sources.list and try installing kde 3.4.1

I cannot re-install kde 3.4.1 after xorg installing. I got for 'apt-get install
kde':

(italian strings mean that packages will not installed)

for 'apt-get install kcontrol' it returns:

I seguenti pacchetti hanno dipendenze non soddisfatte:
kcontrol: Dipende: xlibmesa-glu ma non sta per essere installato oppure
 libglu1
E: Pacchetto non integro

and so kcontrol requires xlibmesa-glu or libglu1 (these packages are for xfree
4.3.0 again)

How can I install KDE on xorg?

Thanks,
Giulio

All are in teh i386 architecture.
You will have to wait a bit for everything to enter amd64 mirrors
(if there are not build problems)

If you don't wanna wait you could apt-get source xorg-x11 && apt-get
build-dep xorg-x11 the compile it yourself like I did.

and rebuild also everything which depends on the old xfree86 libs...

Then you can use apt-ftparchive packages . > Packages &&
apt-ftparchive release . > Release to generate a local repo then
just add a file:///path/to/debs line in your apt sources list then
apt-get install it like it was anything else.

All are in teh i386 architecture.
You will have to wait a bit for everything to enter amd64 mirrors (if
there are not build problems)

If you don't wanna wait you could apt-get source xorg-x11 && apt-get
build-dep xorg-x11 the compile it yourself like I did.

Then you can use apt-ftparchive packages . > Packages && apt-ftparchive
release . > Release to generate a local repo then just add a
file:///path/to/debs line in your apt sources list then apt-get install
it like it was anything else.

Thats maybe because xorg-x11 isn't compiled for amd64 at all yet. All
you are seeing are the architecture independent files from yesterdays
broken upload. Actualy buildable sources are coming with tonights
sync.

Only Arch: all parts are in unstable currently. Better wait for -3. -1 FTBFS
on all archs, -2 may build OK on some archs (we are at this stage now), but
-3 will follow soon which should build fine on all archs (that's the plan of
Debian X Strike Force).

The installation process ended without errors!!! And I didn't have to
modify any configuration file or to recompile nvidia module, it's
working as is. Great job. Thanks to all

No, it's just the right way it should be! But maybe someone'd want to
wait a few days to see if there are critical bugs.
However, I'm installing it now...

Is this bad? If so what has to be done to upgrade to X.org safely?

TIA

you dist-upgrade you will get X.org installed over Xfree.
