Well you could simply try:
cdrecord -dev ATAPI:/dev/hdc -toc (list toc of a cd) or -atip (list info
about a blank CDR type).

If that works, you probably have what you need.

Make sure ide-scsi is NOT loaded, and that ide-cd IS loaded.

If it does DVD's use growisofs -[Z for new, M for append] /dev/hdc
[mkisofs options like -J -R] [files to burn]

Hi Lennart,

thanks for your reply.

I remember it didn't solve (I have tried it in the past). However I have solved
upgrading to kernel 2.6.12 + udev + hal. Sincerely, I don't know if it was
kernel-debian 2.6.11 bug...

Had the same problem; downgraded udev, and it went away.

I use /dev/hda for the sony cd/dvd writer anyway.

Prevent future udev screwups, remove udev completly? Udev doesn't seem
to have stabilized yet.

But none the less you shouldn't be using the ide-scsi emulation for CD
burning anymore.

Maybe upgrade to 2.6.12 and downgrade udev anyway.

I've just installed 2.6.12 and udev doesnt create the device when I
insert a compactflash in the reader.

I've downgraded udev to 0.60 and it works...

There have been some changes in the internal udev devices database
(whatever that is) that require some changes in HAL (according to udev's
changelog). I've informed HAL's maintainer, who was able to reproduce
the issue; unfortunately he won't be available for the next week or two,

As a very long time cdrecord-prodvd user, I would also
suggest switching to growisofs in the dvd+rw-tools package for
burning DVD's in the future. The developer of cdrecord and the
Linux kernel developers seem to have issues most of the time and
in my experience thus far, growisofs just works. It handles both
+ and - media at this point, so don't let the name fool you.

It's more or less completely non-intuitive that growisofs
would be the replacement to cdrecord-prodvd, but there it is.
For what it's worth, I still use cdrecord (non-prodvd) for
burning normal CD's, but it's so rare that I ever burn CD's at
all anymore anyway.

And of course, what everyone else said about using ATA
instead of ide-scsi at this point. You can just pass /dev/dvd or
/dev/hdc or whatever directly to growisofs without the need for
the SCSI emulation layer.
