RHEL 2.4 kernels are not normal 2.4 kernels. They have lots of additional
patches and backported 2.6 features.

One reason it's not going to work for Debian is that we decided
not to support a 2.4 kernel, that also means there was no reason
to keep linuxthreads in glibc. So our glibc only works on a 2.6
kernel.

i can build it myself, but i'd prefer using ready made kernels.

You can run your Opteron in 32-bit mode, but that would've made your
smoking Opteron setup into an expensive 32-bit machine :)

As for 64-bit Linux 2.4 kernels on Opteron - forget it. You're
encounter more problems than you'd want to wish for given that setup.

I might be missing something obvious here, but I'm using a cluster running
dual Opterons with the "2.4.21-27.ELsmp" kernel. It's a Rocks cluster
based on Red Hat, but I don't see why it wouldn't work for Debian
systems. AFAIK, a lot of stuff has been back ported to this one. No
SATA though. Also, this was just an example, there could be even "better"
Opteron 2.4 kernels out there.

Don't know about ready-made Debian kernel packages, but at least there are
source RPM's.

Have a nice day,
