If not, see what 'df -i' says. Jim. the inode count was fine - very low percentage used. I deleted/purged an older kernel and tried again. Installation was successful. The problem did indeed appear to be a disk space issue. Surprising, but solved. Thanks to all who offered suggestions. Ignore that comment. It looks as if it just happened to run out of space when handling that particular module. Your root partition has only 41 M free which is probably too little. If ext2 or ext3 try "dumpe2fs -h /dev/hda1" (as root) and check "Reserved block count" and "Journal size" (if ext3). I'm running a dual core amd64 with Debian unstable, kernel 2.6.17-2-amd64. Today, I tried to upgrade to kernel 2.6.18-3-amd64. I get an unexpected error message concerning a buffer-write failure.
