Re: libsc7_2.3.1-3_amd64.deb problems

2008-05-07 Thread Francesco Pietra
Hi:

#apt-get --purge remove libsc8 libsc-doc libsc-dev libsc7

completed by synaptic removal of libsc-doc (which was not removed by the above
command)
followed by
#apt-get update
#apt-get upgrade

now only reports errors

exim4-daemon-ligth
at
exim4
bsd-mailx
acpid
mailx

which (as from Floria Kulzer) seems be bug #477258, which has been fixed in Sid
since April 25,
exim4 version 4.69-3. The bug report describes how to repair the init
script yourself. (So far the fix did not propagate to Lenny because
there have been further updates in Sid, restarting the 10 days waiting
period.)

I do nothing more if, as I expect, "apt-get upgrade" will do the repair in due
time.

Why these errors did not show up of amd64 when the system complained about
libsc7 is something I do not understand. I got the impression that the libsc7
deb package is faulty.

Thanks
francesco

If you don't need the package anyway, why don't you simply remove it/
them?

Might do the trick.

Try doing:

dpkg --purge libsc8
apt-get install libsc7

If the dpkg fails, then something must still be using it.

Re: libsc7_2.3.1-3_amd64.deb problems

2008-05-06 Thread Francesco Pietra
I have tried with synaptic.

(1) marking libsc8 (which was installed) for removal and unmarking
libsc7_2.3.1-3_amd64.deb (which was not installed), a dist-upgrade is carried
out, ending in the same error:

E: /var/cache/apt/archives/libsc7_2.3.1-3_amd64.deb trying to overwrite
'/usr/lib/libSCstates.so.7.1.0' whi is also in package libsc8.

Now marking libsc-dev for removal returns errors:

E: exim-daemon-light subprocesses post-installation script returned error exit
status 1

E: exim4 depend problem

E: bds-mailx dep problem

E: acpid subprocess post-install error 1

E: mailx dep problem

I.e, it drops now in the same errors that I had reported for i386. "Florian
Kulzer" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> kindly advided me that it is a bug fixed in
unstable, not yet passed to lenny.

Well perhaps that is where you got it from then.

http://tinyplanet.ca/~lsorense/mpqc/ currently has:
# libint-dev_1.1.2-0_amd64.deb
# libint-dev_1.1.2-0_i386.deb
# libint1_1.1.2-0_amd64.deb
# libint1_1.1.2-0_i386.deb
# libint_1.1.2-0.diff.gz
# libint_1.1.2-0.dsc
# libint_1.1.2.orig.tar.gz
# libsc-dev_2.3.1-0.2_amd64.deb
# libsc-dev_2.3.1-0.2_i386.deb
# libsc-doc_2.3.1-0.2_all.deb
# libsc8_2.3.1-0.2_amd64.deb
# libsc8_2.3.1-0.2_i386.deb
# mpqc-support_2.3.1-0.2_amd64.deb
# mpqc-support_2.3.1-0.2_i386.deb
# mpqc_2.3.1-0.2_amd64.deb
# mpqc_2.3.1-0.2_i386.deb
# mpqc_2.3.1.orig.tar.gz

I seem to recall one of the updates I did there required the newer
version. Probably the libint stuff. I suspect mpqc 2.3.1 in Debian
does not have libint support. I can update the version numbers to -3.1
to make things easier to use if libint support is still desired.

Usually that message means you have it installed, but it is no longer
available for download from one of the sites in your sources.list
(assuming it ever was).

Since it actually appears to be one of the packages that comes from
mpqc, you should download it from where you downloaded the mpqc packages
from.

Well mpqc seems to use it too. It seems odd that libsc8 conflicts with

such. If nothing else it should conflict if it can't be installed at

Re: libsc7_2.3.1-3_amd64.deb problems

2008-05-06 Thread Francesco Pietra
Hi:
Sorry for this lengthy dealing with libsc7/libsc8, though I would like to clean
the system, i.e. not to have these issues raised at each "apt-get upgrade".
Actually, now "apt-get upgrade" only results in:

Reading package list ...Done
Building dependency tree ... Done
You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct.
Packages with unmet dependencies:
libsc-dev: Depends: libsc7 (= 2.3.1-3) but it is not installed.

It seems to be unable to upgrading, unless there is nothing else.

I think that I don't need either libsc7 or libsc8. Both come from "The
Scientific Computing Toolkit" (Sandja Lab, mpqc) an extraordinary quantum
mechanical package that I used successfully, but one that unfortunately is not
being developed toward organic chemical applications. Therefore I don't use it
any more. There is a relationship with "ghemical" that I don't use either on
this amd64 system (I barely run 'startx' on rare occasions)

I did some search:

apt-cache rdepends libsc7
ENTER
Reverse Depends:
mpqc-support
mpqc
libsc-dev
libghemical3gf

apt-cache rdepends libsc8
ENTER
Reverse Depends:
[nothing reported]

If I carry out the same commands with i386 (where mpqc is still installed), for
libsc7 there is one line more "libghemical0c2a", while for libsc8 the answer is
"no package found".

Thanks
francesco pietra

libsc7 and libsc8 appear to conflict. Apparently you can't have both
installed at once. Most likely you want to uninstall libsc7 and
libsc7-dev. Perhaps libsc8-dev or libsc-dev is the package you want
instead.

Re: libsc7_2.3.1-3_amd64.deb problems

2008-05-06 Thread Francesco Pietra
Hi:
Following

# apt-get clean

then

#apt-get update
#apt-get upgrade

the system was no more complaining about libsc7, though it was about libsc7-dev
(unmet dependencies as it depends from libsc7). Suggested "apt-get -f install",
which I did; it asked permission to install libsc7_2.3.1-3_amd64.
I accepted:

Get:1 http://ftp.debian.org lenny/main libsc7 2.3.1-3 [2840kB]
Fetched 2840kB in 38s (73.3kB/s)
perl: warning: setting locale failed.
perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings:
LANGUAGE = (unset)
LC_ALL = (unset)
LANG = "en_US.UTF-8"
are supported and installed on your system.
perl : warning:Falling back to the standard locale ("C").
locale: Cannot set LC_ALL to default locale: No such file or directory
(Reading database ... 99787 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking libsc7 (from .../libsc7_2.3.1-3_amd64.deb) ...
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/libsc7_2.3.1-3_amd64.deb
(--unpack):
trying to overwrite '/usr/lib/libSCstate.so.7.1.0', which is also in package
libsc8
dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)
Errors encountered while processing:
/var/cache/apt/archives/lisc7_2.3.1-3_amd64.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned error code (1)

Now libsc7_2.3.1-3_amd64.deb (Mar 15 19:47 2840478 bytes) is the only file
present in /var/cache/apt/archives, besides file "lock" (0 bytes) and directory
"partial" (empty).

I did nothing else in the fear to damage the system

Thanks for advice

"apt-cache rdepends libsc7" provides the same information, fyi.

Run aptitude with no parameters and enter the interactive interface.
Run a search on libsc7 and see. Actually its not a long list, here it
is:
ghemical
libghemical0c2a
libsc-dev
mpqc

So if you don't have any of those installed, you can go ahead and remove
it.

When you install a deb, the deb is archived there incase something goes
wrong during install and you need to try again without re-downloading
it, or you want to keep it around for other boxes, or you want to remove
and reinstall. You can remove all of them with aptitude clean or just
remove ones that are nolonger valid with aptitude autoclean. You can do
either from the aptitude interactive interface.

One way to find out:
  sudo apt-get remove libsc7_2.3.1

It will remove all that depends on the package as well. Before doing it, it
will ask if you are sure. Say no, or hit Ctrl-C, unless the package list
looks totally harmless to you.

> Also a naive question: why all those deb packages in /var/cache/apt/archives ?

Probably to make reinstalling faster. I usually do
   sudo apt-get clean
as a part of my weekly(?) update routine, and it seems to keep them away.
Actually, my routine command (cut and pasted from the wiki page where I note
the changes) is
  sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -u && sudo apt-get clean

-H

'apt-get autoclean' will delete any that are obsolete and can not ever
be needed again.
'apt-get clean' removes all of them.

To save download time if needed again later.

Every so often they fill up /var on me (I tend to update manually almost
every day) and then things stop working until I delete those files. I
hate that.

libsc7_2.3.1-3_amd64.deb problems

2008-05-05 Thread Francesco Pietra
I have updated from etch to lenny (UMA type machine dual opterons raid1) by
just replacing "etch" with "lenny" in sources.list. Got a single error while
processing

/var/cache/apt/archives/libsc7_2.3.1-3_amd64.deb

Running

#apt-get -f install

reported the same error.

I remember that library was in connection with a quantum-mechanical computation
program "mpqc" (from the Sandja lab), which is deb packaged but which is no
more installed on this machine ("which mpqc" and varieties of this command for
the executable do not report anything).

Is that library needed for something else?

Also a naive question: why all those deb packages in /var/cache/apt/archives ?

Thanks
