This is actually the kind of problems which happen from time to time with
unstable: unstable packaging of otherwise (mostly) very stable software, in
spite of being close to cutting edge. In this case, the problem is that with
such a big transition a whole lot of packages need to be recompiled and
uploaded to update their dependencies, this takes time and may wreak some
havoc when you are in the middle, with some of them updated with the new
dependencies and some of them still depending on the older packages (which
must go due to conflicts). Luckily, such grand transitions are rare. In
testing, the transition phase will be skipped altogether, since probably the
whole big lump of updates will go in all of a sudden after big problems are
resolved. If you want some real unstable debian packages (as in software,
not packaging), go for experimental, that will get you a rough ride
indeed...

Well, a lesson in patience.

Thank you for the reply, Giacomo.

Python in sid is undergoing a very big transition, it appears, and some
things are still broken, especially in terms of lots of messed up
dependencies and conflicts. Hopefully things will get back to normal as the
transition completes, all packages depending on python packages are rebuilt
with fixed dependencies etc.. Debian unstable is, usually, very stable, but
sometimes lives up to its name :)

python2.4 insanity

Greetings all,

I attempted to update my HP Pavilion zv6000 series laptop (amd64)
running sid (unstable all the way!). I get a really strange error with
python2.4; it won't install and it won't remove (argh!).

x-x-x-x begin error message x-x-x-x
Preconfiguring packages ...
dpkg: error processing python2.r (--remove)
Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should
reinstall it before attempting a removal.
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::logic_error'
 what(): basic_string::_S_construct NULL not valid
/usr/lib/dpkg/methods/apt/install: line 57: 10158 Aborted\\
$APTGET $OPTS "$APT_OPT0" "$APT_OPT1" dselect-upgrade
Some errors occurred ... (etc. etc.)
x-x-x-x end error message x-x-x-x

I don't have a clue.
