THX! I´ve tried the Sarge one on the testing maschine, and it seems to
work well except for that it doesn´t detect the on-board network card.
But I don´t mind that since the maschine I want to install it on has a
NIC that will be recognized; and once installed, I´ll compile a kernel
anyway. So I should be fine with older installer :)

Meanwhile, I have become unsure if I should switch. It seems I might get
into troubles I don´t want to have. Hmmm ...

todays installer is still broken

2005-10-24 Thread .

Hi,

I´m trying todays installer[1], and it´s still broken. When installing
the base system, it pops up an error message:

The debootstrap program exited with an error (return value 1). Check
/var/log/syslog ...

There´s a message on console 3 saying chroot: cannot execute mount: No
such file or directory

When you look up /target/bin, there´s actually no mount. I manually
copied over everything from /bin to /target/bin and selected to install
the base system again from the installer menu to the unclean target.
During the install, there are some messages in the progress window
saying something about required packages that cannot be unpacked, but
they disappear to quickly to be read.

The process continues until it asks which kernel image should be
installed. The linux-image-2.6-amd64-generic is the default which I
choose (BTW, what´s the difference between the two images?). It then says:

An error was returned while trying to install the initrd-tools package
onto the target system ...

On console 3, errors for the following packages are reported:

sed
wget
lsb-base
console-common
netbase
initscripts
module-init-tools
console-tools
sysvinit
modutils

I have saved the logfiles and can mail them, but they are rather large.
Let me know if they would be helpful, and I´ll mail them.

Have you tried using a stable installer - either the normal sarge
installer, or Len's 2.6.12 installer?

No, I haven´t. Where do I find those?

The normal sarge installer seems not to be available for amd64.

I´ve currently a testing machine at hand for maybe a few days, so it´s a
good time to check things out.

Start with http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/sarge-amd64/

Then go read
https://alioth.debian.org/docman/view.php/30192/21/debian-amd64-howto.html

And if need be, visit http://tinyplanet.ca/~lsorense/amd64/

Thank you very much! These appear to be very helpful :)

Which installer image is recommended? The one from
http://tinyplanet.ca/~lsorense/amd64/ seems to be newer than what´s on
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/sarge-amd64/iso-cd/.

BTW, how are users supposed to find these pages/installers? Docs on
debian.org only point to the non-working installers.

I say start with Len's installer (the tinyplanet.ca one) because it's
got a newer kernel. If you use it, things are more likely to work the
