That in general is a very good idea for using Linux (at least at this
time).

If you want to use Linux, buy systems that are known to be compatible.
ATI really isn't at this time. When nvidia releases a new driver, it
supports all their chips no matter who made the device it is on, while
ATI seems to want to blame laptop makers for anything that could
possibly go wrong and just about don't want to offer drivers for laptop
chips (claiming the laptop maker should provide those, which of course
would be nice if they offered linux drivers ever), and it seems to take
quite a while before a new chip is supported even by ATI's latest
driver.

I stopped buying ATI because their drivers seemed to have known bugs for
years that they listed on their website and promised to fix in the next
release real soon. Well that was the win98 drivers, and I am still
waiting for that 'next release' to fix those bugs. My TNT2 on the other
hand I can still get driver updates for.

Open source drivers would be nice, but at least enough customer service
and support to use my device for as long as I want to would be nice.
nvidia provides me that, ATI doesn't.

What about "just", if possible, not buying a Turion MT32, and going
with something that has nvidia graphics?

Re: what are the missing ports?

I can give you the ATI driver deb package that I created. It works
with the 2.6.11-9-amd68-k8 kernel image found in the apt sources. If
you are using a different kernel, it more than likely will not work
and you will have to create your own drivers. There are some good
instructions on how to do this here:
http://xoomer.virgilio.it/flavio.stanchina/debian/fglrx-installer.html

The generic driver is very weak compared to the official ATI drivers,
though I am still having a few problems with the ATI drivers, such as
vlc and totem having random blue lines in video, I cannot get snes9x
to work properly (not sure if this has to do with the ATI drivers or
just with the snes9x package) and the ATI drivers do some strange
stuff with xinerama displays.

Hi,

I don't know whether the X.Org or XFree86 drivers work with the X700,
although I suspect they are fine, but I do know that ATI's proprietary
driver does not support suspend / resume, and so can be a pain on a
laptop.

See question ID 218 on the ATI site (Advanced Search, "by ID"...).
Unfortunately ATI's website now sucks even more than it used to, and
deep linking appears to be impossible... :-(

Regards,
Andrew McMillan.

If you check the archives of the mailing list, someone did try to
package up the ATI drivers for amd64 port, so you may be able to just
use those to install the drivers on your system. At least the X700 is
listed as supported in those drivers.

There is a generic radeon driver which supports some radeons, but of
course only in 2D for the most part. It does not support all radeons
though (I have had no luck with the one in a new Dell laptop someone got
at work. It works if I load the radeonfb driver and use fb X driver.
Text mode does not work on the radeonfb driver though (only shows the
cursor) which I find rather odd.

Hi,
I'm about to buy e Turion MT32 notebook and I will install sarge amd64 on it.
However, I'm trying to find out what packages are not ported yet. The links
below
are appearently broken...

The other thing is the graphics card: Ati Radeon X700. Will I have a decent X
server even if I don't use Ati's proprietary driver? Is there some generic
driver?

Thanks,
