I didn't have initrd-tools installed, and assumed the 32-bit version wouldn't work to install the 64-bit kernel; but it did work. I completed the installation via deboostrap, at least as far as I could go (--foreign) from a 32-bit kernel. Thanks for your help. Did you specify -o APT::Architecture=amd64 on search as well? If there is such a thing. The kernels are in pool/main/l/linux-2.6 as they should be. e.g: linux-image-amd64-k8_2.6.15-7_amd64.deb MfG Goswin -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Re: where to find a linux-image-2.6* package?

OK, so I looked on my sarge installation DVD #1 and found a stock kernel package to get me started: kernel-image-2.6.8-11-amd64-k8_2.6.8-14_amd64.deb. But now I can't install it, because it needs to build an initrd using 64-bit tools as part of the installation. So I have a chicken-and-egg problem: * I can't install the 64-bit kernel, because it needs 64-bit tools to build its initrd. * I can't run the 64-bit tools yet, because I'm not running a 64-bit kernel. So it seems to me that for those of us who are still running in 32 bits, installing amd64 via debootstrap is simply not possible. We have to boot debian-installer. Am I wrong? where to find a linux-image-2.6* package?
Where can I find a linux-image-2.6* (or kernel-image-2.6*) package for amd64? I've put deb http://debian.csail.mit.edu/debian-amd64/debian/ sarge main contrib deb http://debian.csail.mit.edu/debian-amd64/debian/ sid main contrib deb http://mirror.espri.arizona.edu/debian-amd64/debian/ sarge main contrib deb http://mirror.espri.arizona.edu/debian-amd64/debian/ sid main contrib into /etc/apt/sources.list and run apt-get -o APT::Architecture=amd64 update, but then apt-cache search linux-image or apt-cache search kernel-image give no results. I want to install a generic 64-bit kernel in order to complete my installation of amd64 using debootstrap.
