Bug#264718: apache2-mpm-prefork: mod_userdir forcibly enabled

2004-08-10 Thread Richard Fairhall
Package: apache2-mpm-prefork
Version: 2.0.50-8
Severity: important

mod_userdir is forcibly enabled when apache2 is upgraded. This should
not happen because it should be up to the admin to decide whether they
want a module enabled especially on an upgrade which has the potential
to break things. It is very annoying to have to manually disable userdir
after the upgrade. I can think of no good reason for doing this as
mod_userdir is not required for the default apache.conf to work.

Bug#263804: increase severity of libapr0-dev: [PATCH] : link coherently with Berkeley DB

2004-08-10 Thread Matt Kraai
Howdy,

It's not a matter of versioned symbols. The problem is that, at
least on SPARC, the output of apu-config --libs contains
-ldb-4.0, whereas the package does depends on libdb4.2-dev
instead of libdb4.0-dev.

Bug#263038: apache2-mpm-prefork: cgi-bin doesn't seem to work

2004-08-10 Thread Thom May
I imagine it was related to cgi changing to being built-in and then back
again.
just a2enmoding the cgi module should fix your problems.
-Thom

 Turns out it wasn't a bug with apache2 after all (maintainer you can as

 Unfortunately, I'm not sure how I fixed the problem, but you might want
 to try these steps:

 o use a2dismod to disable the cgi module, and a2end to re-enable it
 o restart apache
 o flush your browser cache completely and try again

 Lemme know if you get it working. If not, I'll try to dig in deeper into
 what I did.

The subversion build is failing on s390 and sparc like this :

checking for availability of Berkeley DB... no
configure: error: Berkeley DB 4.0.14 wasn't found.
make: *** [debian/stamp-configure] Error 1

The subversion build tries to make sure it uses the same version of
Berkeley DB as apr-util used. debian/control of apache2 hints that the
package would like to be linking against Berkeley DB 4.2. Unfortunately
apr-util on spacr (and probably s390 as well) is a bit confused as to
which version of Berkeley DB it uses:

$ ldd /usr/lib/libaprutil-0.so | grep libdb
  libdb-4.2.so = /usr/lib/libdb-4.2.so (0x700b4000)
$ apu-config --libs
 -lldap -llber -ldb-4.0 -lexpat
$

The above commands were executed on a sparc machine with libapr0-dev
2.0.50-7. If we take a look at the s390 build log (I'd use the sparc
build log if I could find one) :

from
http://buildd.debian.org/fetch.php?pkg=apache2ver=2.0.50-7arch=s390stamp=1091560809file=logas=raw

. . .
checking for Berkeley DB 4.0 in the standard places...
checking db4/db.h usability... no
checking db4/db.h presence... no
checking for db4/db.h... no
checking db.h usability... yes
checking db.h presence... yes
checking for db.h... yes
checking for -ldb-4.0... yes
checking for default DBM... db4
  adding -ldb-4.0 to APRUTIL_EXPORT_LIBS
  adding -ldb-4.0 to APRUTIL_LIBS
. . .

So s390 used 4.0, and now on sparc, what does apache2 use :

$ ldd /usr/sbin/apache2 | grep db
libdb-4.2.so = /usr/lib/libdb-4.2.so (0x701fc000)
libdb-4.0.so = /usr/lib/libdb-4.0.so (0x70378000)
$

I don't think berkeley db was made to work well with two versions in
the same process. The included patch at least makes the apr-util
build choose db 4.2. I think this will resolve the problem. I'm
doing a full build on sparc now to make sure.

userdir is forcibly enabled since it changed from being built in to being a
module. Not enabling it would have broken many more configs than not, so
this is a safe default.
I'll be implementing debconf questions to handle this more gracefully.

Hi,
if i use the following small test.pl script to create a file:
---
#!/usr/bin/perl -w

open(TMP,/tmp/test.log);
print TMP hallo\n\n;
close TMP;

print Content-type: text/html\n\n;
print hallo;
---

After executing this via a web browser my file get these
strange permissions:
ls -la /tmp/test.log
-r--w-  1 www-data root 0 Jul 30 14:04 /tmp/test.log

A serious problem.

I fixed this temporary by adding umask 0022 to /etc/init.d/apache2.

I tried to verify this behaviour on my desktop system (BSD) with apache2
from source, but it does not happen on that machine.

thanks
Waldemar

  As indicated earlier in the report aprutil links with DB 4.0 which the
  rest of the package links with 4.2. That leaves apache linking with
  two separate versions. In the past a similar multi-version link
  between subversion and apache of berkeley DB caused segmentation
  faults in apache.

 This should not happen, have you got references for this? All versions
 of BerkeleyDB in Debian use versioned symbols which should make
 linking against two versions at runtime safe.

hmm, well I cannot find a reference. It is possible that the problem
I am remembering did not occur on a Debian system. Perhaps I should
just fix the subversion build to not get upset with the incoherent
linking. . .
