Bug#438152: apache2-utils: htpasswd, htpasswd.1.gz in several packages
Package: apache2-utils Version: 2.2.4-3 Severity: normal I received this error when trying to install apache2, without first uninstalling thttpd and thttpd-util: dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/apache2-utils_2.2.4-3_i386.deb (--unpack): trying to overwrite `/usr/bin/htpasswd', which is also in package thttpd-util dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe) ... Errors were encountered while processing: /var/cache/apt/archives/apache2-utils_2.2.4-3_i386.deb E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) According to the list of files, /usr/bin/htpasswd and /usr/share/man/man1/htpasswd.1.gz are in apache2-utils, thttpd-util, mini-httpd. The mini-httpd package adds a diversion (Adding `diversion of /usr/bin/htpasswd to /usr/bin/htpasswd.apache2-utils by mini-httpd'), so installs properly. Apache2-utils and thttpd-util fail to install over each other, with errors similar to those noted above. I can install either if I remove the other first, of course. Possibly a diversion or package conflict might fix things? My apologies in advance if anything above is unclear, I don't file many bugs on Debian things. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.22-1-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C (charmap=ANSI_X3.4-1968) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages apache2-utils depends on: ii libapr1 1.2.7-8.2 The Apache Portable Runtime Librar ii libaprutil1 1.2.7+dfsg-2+b1 The Apache Portable Runtime Utilit ii libc62.6.1-1 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libdb4.4 4.4.20-8.1 Berkeley v4.4 Database Libraries [ ii libexpat11.95.8-4XML parsing C library - runtime li ii libldap2 2.1.30-13.4 OpenLDAP libraries ii libpcre3 7.2-1 Perl 5 Compatible Regular Expressi ii libpq5 8.2.4-3 PostgreSQL C client library ii libsqlite3-0 3.4.1-1 SQLite 3 shared library ii libssl0.9.8 0.9.8e-5SSL shared libraries ii libuuid1 1.40.2-1universally unique id library apache2-utils recommends no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. reassign 438152 thttpd-util found 438152 2.23beta1-7 thanks thttpd-util version 2.23beta1-5 (in etch) has thtpasswd instead of htpasswd. Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) ---BeginMessage--- Package: apache2.2-common Version: 2.2.3-4 Severity: normal There are two differents problems, in /etc/init.d/apache2 restart function you use sleep 10 between start and stop, but 10 seconds is not enough in the case where some childs cannot be killed easily. So it tries to stop the server, and tries to start it before it is stopped so it is not able to start the server. This is not very important if no script are calling restart. But /etc/logrotate.d/apache2 does. A good idea should be to use reload instead of restart. In the first case you may kill legitimate process and you do at least ten seconds of service outage (or more if the server doesn't restart...) which may be very bad on high availability services, in the second case you may loose some lines of logs and it's all. (needless to say that this happened to me several times) It may be an easy DOS attack, you just have to overload an apache server at 6:25 AM, with the overload it is going to take more than 10 seconds to stop and it will not restart, enjoy ! -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.21.1-grsec Locale: LANG=en_US.ISO-8859-15, LC_CTYPE=en_US.ISO-8859-15 (charmap=ISO-8859-15) Versions of packages apache2.2-common depends on: ii apache2-utils2.2.3-4 utility programs for webservers ii libmagic14.17-5etch1 File type determination library us ii lsb-base 3.1-23.1Linux Standard Base 3.1 init scrip ii mime-support 3.39-1 MIME files 'mime.types' 'mailcap ii net-tools1.60-17 The NET-3 networking toolkit ii procps 1:3.2.7-3 /proc file system utilities apache2.2-common recommends no packages. -- no debconf information ---End Message--- ---BeginMessage--- Source: apache2 Source-Version: 2.2.3-4+etch1 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of apache2, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive: apache2-doc_2.2.3-4+etch1_all.deb to pool/main/a/apache2/apache2-doc_2.2.3-4+etch1_all.deb apache2-mpm-event_2.2.3-4+etch1_i386.deb to pool/main/a/apache2/apache2-mpm-event_2.2.3-4+etch1_i386.deb apache2-mpm-perchild_2.2.3-4+etch1_all.deb to pool/main/a/apache2/apache2-mpm-perchild_2.2.3-4+etch1_all.deb apache2-mpm-prefork_2.2.3-4+etch1_i386.deb to pool/main/a/apache2/apache2-mpm-prefork_2.2.3-4+etch1_i386.deb apache2-mpm-worker_2.2.3-4+etch1_i386.deb to pool/main/a/apache2/apache2-mpm-worker_2.2.3-4+etch1_i386.deb apache2-prefork-dev_2.2.3-4+etch1_i386.deb to pool/main/a/apache2/apache2-prefork-dev_2.2.3-4+etch1_i386.deb apache2-src_2.2.3-4+etch1_all.deb to pool/main/a/apache2/apache2-src_2.2.3-4+etch1_all.deb apache2-threaded-dev_2.2.3-4+etch1_i386.deb to pool/main/a/apache2/apache2-threaded-dev_2.2.3-4+etch1_i386.deb apache2-utils_2.2.3-4+etch1_i386.deb to pool/main/a/apache2/apache2-utils_2.2.3-4+etch1_i386.deb apache2.2-common_2.2.3-4+etch1_i386.deb to pool/main/a/apache2/apache2.2-common_2.2.3-4+etch1_i386.deb apache2_2.2.3-4+etch1.diff.gz to pool/main/a/apache2/apache2_2.2.3-4+etch1.diff.gz apache2_2.2.3-4+etch1.dsc to pool/main/a/apache2/apache2_2.2.3-4+etch1.dsc apache2_2.2.3-4+etch1_all.deb to pool/main/a/apache2/apache2_2.2.3-4+etch1_all.deb A summary of the changes between this version and the previous one is attached. Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) ---BeginMessage--- Package: apache2 Version: 2.0.53-5 Severity: important the logrotate script for apache2 calls /etc/init.d/apache2 restart in its postrotate command. The old init-script called $APACHE2CTL restart and everything was working. The new init-script (provided by 2.0.53-5) has changed the restart command to apache stop and $APACHE2CTL startssl. This breaks the logrotate postrotate for servers with ssl certificates that have a passphrase set for them, as the restart command hangs and noone can enter the passphrase. A better solution would be to call the apache2 init script with the reload command in the logrotate postrotate. Perhaps logrotate could be changed to use /etc/init.d/apache2 reload, or the restart part of the initscript could be made more reliable. -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers testing APT policy: (900, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.17-2-amd64 Locale: LANG=de_DE.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=de_DE.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages apache2.2-common depends on: ii apache2-utils 2.2.3-3.1 utility programs for webservers ii libmagic1 4.17-4 File type determination library us ii lsb-base 3.1-15 Linux Standard Base 3.1 init scrip ii mime-support 3.37-1 MIME files 'mime.types' 'mailcap ii net-tools 1.60-17The NET-3 networking toolkit apache2.2-common recommends no packages. Bug#429516: marked as done (apache2-common logrotate : could reload be used instead of restart ?)

Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) ---BeginMessage--- Package: apache2-commonVersion: 2.0.54-5sarge1Package: apache2.2-commonVersion: 2.2.3-4In the logrotate config file for Apache (/etc/logrotate.d/apache2), the restart command is used to tell Apache to use the new logfiles after they have been rotated. This is kind of harsh since it's a full stop start of the server. It also causes problems for people using SSL certificates for which the key is encrypted, and thus needs a passphrase to be typed in everytime Apache starts. Here's the relevant part of /etc/logrotate.d/apache2 :postrotate if [ -f /var/run/apache2.pid ]; then /etc/init.d/apache2 restart /dev/nullfi endscriptMay I suggest that restart be changed for reload, which has the same effect regarding logfile rotation, does not require the passphrase to be re-entered, and is less harsh overall.postrotateif [ -f /var/run/apache2.pid ]; then/etc/init.d/apache2 reload /dev/nullfiendscript I am using Debian 3.1 (sarge) with Apache2 and also Debian 4.0 (etch) with Apache 2.2.Thank you. _ News, entertainment and everything you care about at Live.com. Bug#423653: marked as done (apache2.2-common: mod_disk_cache fills /var after etch upgrade)
Your message dated Wed, 15 Aug 2007 22:01:20 + with message-id [EMAIL PROTECTED] and subject line Bug#423653: fixed in apache2 2.2.3-4+etch1 has caused the attached Bug report to be marked as done. This means that you claim that the problem has been dealt with. If this is not the case it is now your responsibility to reopen the Bug report if necessary, and/or fix the problem forthwith. (NB: If you are a system administrator and have no idea what I am talking about this indicates a serious mail system misconfiguration somewhere. Please contact me immediately.) Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) ---BeginMessage--- Package: apache2.2-common Version: 2.2.3-4 Severity: critical Justification: breaks unrelated software After an upgrade to etch, mod_disk_cache started storing things in /var/cache/apache2/mod_disk_cache, without any apparently limit on size. This caused /var to fill up, which had bad effects on the entire system. I am not sure if mod_disk_cache was enabled or not before the upgrade to etch (from sarge), but it was certainly not using disk space in the same way. The problem appears to be related to having mod_proxy enabled at upgrade time, according to bug #407171 (http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=407171) It is not entirely clear to me from that bug description whether mod_disk_cache was previously enabled but in a different way, or if it is newly enabled by the upgrade. mod_disk_cache appears to be experimental (http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/mod/mod_disk_cache.html), and also the garbage collection features that would be necesary to keep the disk cache to a fixed bound are not yet implemented. Disabling it seems not to have caused any problems, even for mod_proxy. The status of libapache2-mod-perl2
Hi all, I'm sending this mail as an answer to #438168 - A user (understandably) fed up by what seems to be lack of attention to a package that is core to many people's work, libapache2-mod-perl2. I send this mail with some fear, of course, as I do not really want to adopt it - but... Well, the circumstances might be pushing for it ;-) Now, what's ModPerl2's status? - It is maintained by Thom May, with Andres Salomon listed as an uploader. - Thom's last upload for this package (1.999.23-1) is dated 8 May 2005 - Andres' last upload (2.0.2-2) is dated 12 Mar 2006. Just for the record, two uploads prior to this (2.0.1-4, 04 Oct 2005), he notes in the changelog this is The I'm-tired-of-maintaining-stuff-I-don't-use release - Since the beginning of 2006, the package has seen only four NMUs - Sesse, Luk, Aba and Vorlon Of course, before any action, I'd like to hear Thom's or Andres' points of view. Now, I'd be happy to adopt it, but I really doubt I'm up to the task. First of all, I suck big time at C. Second, I suck at time allocation, and my Debian work has been repeatedly hampered by this. My first suggestion is for the pkg-perl group to step up and take it as one of our beloved children^Wmodules... But I fear several of us will be in a position similar to mine, with a good knowledge of Perl, but a poor knowledge of C - And in this case, we _will_ need it. On the other hand, I'm also Cc:ing the Debian Apache Maintainers - But the opposite effect might hold: You are familiar with the Apache guts, but you might be unfamiliar with mod_perl2 itself So, - Should we hijack/adopt the package, or will its current maintainers stand up and get it back to life? - Is there somebody who wants to lead this? - Pkg-perl and/or Apache groups: Do you agree? :) - In any other case: Other takers? You probably want to hear my input too. :-) At Debconf5, I was more or less persuaded into taking the package (up to the level where I actually had the first maintainer upload ready). I did, however, set a condition that was sort of silly -- that Thom would sign my GPG key. Naturally, we all forgot about it, the key was never signed, I didn't go to DC6 and Thom didn't go to DC7. So, it all sort of faded away, and the package was kept in a sort of limbo where I sort of had the responsibility and sort of not. Not taking clearer action at the time, despite nagging from Thom, is something I'll have to take the blame for. However, at the time of writing I'm in the process of starting to work, so I really cannot take on any new responsibilities until I know how life is going to look like. Thus, I'm afraid I can't take over the package -- perhaps as co-maintainer if you need me (although I'm skeptical of co-maintenance in general), and of course as a user, but nothing else. /* Steinar */ -- Homepage: http://www.sesse.net/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
