Bug#529416: apache2.2-common: Apache2 does not start with mod_ssl enabled
Package: apache2.2-common Version: 2.2.9-10+lenny2 Severity: normal Suddenly (not after a change in configuration), apache2 fails to start when mod_ssl is enabled. Disabling mod_ssl makes apache2 start, but is not an option in my case. I've done an strace with mod_ssl enabled to diagnose to problem but had no luck. Hi, it turned out that this was some kind of misbehaviour of mod_ssl concerning wrong configuration with, however, correct syntax. In my case this was a file permission issue with the keyfile and a missing SSLCertificateKeyFile directive. I would consider this a bug, some Error message would be appreciated and apropriate here. retitle 526518 segfault with mod_perl and DBD::MySQL thanks On Thursday 07 May 2009, Stefan Fritsch wrote: But if I read your report correctly, you are using libaprutil1 1.3.x (which loads libmysqlclient_r.so only when needed) and are using neither mod_dbd nor mod_php? In this case only libmysqlclient.so gets loaded and there can be no conflict with libmysqlclient_r.so. You could verify this by reinstalling the normal Debian version of libdbd-mysql-perl and looking at /proc/PID/maps of an apache process. Does it contain libmysqlclient_r.so? The submitter confirmed this on an Ubuntu system but does not have the original Debian installation any more to do more checks. This still confirms that there is another problem than the simultaneous loading of libmysqlclient_r.so and libmysqlclient.so. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-apache-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. I have no possibility to try to reproduce the bug at the moment, but will try to do so the next days. OK, please give a more detailed description on how to reproduce the problem, then. With missing SSLCertificateKeyFile directive, I get [Tue May 19 21:11:19 2009] [error] Init: Private key not found which is not perfect but points to the problem. The file permissions on the key/cert should not be a problem since apache reads those files as root. The $() was already in use, but there were some old backticks left. In some places the extra shell call seemed to be unnecessary, so the calls were simplified. An example: - if `$APACHE2CTL configtest /dev/null 21`; then + if $APACHE2CTL configtest /dev/null 21; then I believe, the return code of $APACHE2CTL call is available to the if-statement without running it under subshell. BUG DESCRIPTION The Options settings FollowSymlinks and SymlinksIfOwnerMatch are ignored for files included using SSI when the files are symlinks and located in the same directory. Even when the FollowSymlinks and SymlinksIfOwnerMatch are NOT set, symlinks are still followed, and ownership is not checked. This means a user can set a symlink to any file on the system readable by the Apache user, even outside the DocumentRoot, and read it through HTTP, even if the administrator disabled this by not setting FollowSymlinks and SymlinksIfOwnerMatch. The bug is present in all current 2.2.x versions, so both in 2.2.9 (lenny) and 2.2.11 (sid). 2. HOW TO REPRODUCE Reproduce with: * server settings Options FollowSymlinks # usually the default VirtualHost testhost ServerName testhost.test.tld Directory /var/www/ Options Indexes IncludesNoExec # note no FollowSymlinks /VirtualHost * index.shtml file: Pre!--#include file=foo.txt--/PreP Pre!--#include file=root_link_to_foo.txt--PreP Pre!--#include file=user_link_to_foo.txt--Pre * data files / links: -rw-r--r-- 1 root root25 Sep 7 11:47 foo.txt lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root10 Sep 7 12:32 root_link_to_foo.txt - foo.txt lrwxrwxrwx 1 wwwwww 7 Sep 7 15:09 user_link_to_foo.txt - foo.txt (the last link is used to check if SymlinksIfOwnerMatch works) The index.shmtl files will now show the contents of 'foo.txt' three times, even though it should error out on the symlinks. 3. PATCH This issue has already been addressed by the Apache developers and the fix will be included in the next 2.2.x and 2.3.x releases. See: https://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=45959 The patch applies cleanly to 2.2.9 and works.
