thank you

Hi apache2 maintainers,

there seems to be a glitch in the apache2 scripts or transition manual, which
prevents MPM to be switched before the apache2 is configured.

It looks like I will need to Pre-Depend on apache2 = 2.4 for the transition
period from 2.2 to 2.4.

That's also probably something which would be better places in dh helper to add
replacement for ${apache2:Pre-Depends} which I would place into Pre-Depends:,
so it can be dropped automatically when no longer needed.

Bug#711479: apache2-maintscript-helper fails when invoked inside postinst written in Perl

2013-06-07 Thread Robert Luberda
Package: apache2
Version: 2.4.4-5
Severity: normal
Tags: patch
Blocks: 669745

dwww package has postinst script writtern in Perl and embeeds shell code added
by debhelper
 in the way described in the debhelper(7) man page:

   If you would like to embed it into a Perl script, here is one way
   to do that (note that I made sure that $1, $2, etc are set with the set
command):

 my $temp=set -e\nset -- @ARGV\n .  'EOF';
 #DEBHELPER#
 EOF
 system ($temp) / 256 == 0
   or die Problem with debhelper scripts: $!;

Unfortunatelly this does not work with apache2-maintainer-script, see
the following debugging output from `set -x':

  + [ -e /usr/share/apache2/apache2-maintscript-helper ]
  + . /usr/share/apache2/apache2-maintscript-helper
  + [ -n  ]
  + EXPORT_APACHE2_MAINTSCRIPT_HELPER=1
  + [ -n  ]
  + [ -e /etc/apache2/envvars ]
  + . /etc/apache2/envvars
  + unset HOME
  + [  !=  ]
  + SUFFIX=
  + export APACHE_RUN_USER=www-data
  + export APACHE_RUN_GROUP=www-data
  + export APACHE_PID_FILE=/var/run/apache2/apache2.pid
  + export APACHE_RUN_DIR=/var/run/apache2
  + export APACHE_LOCK_DIR=/var/lock/apache2
  + export APACHE_LOG_DIR=/var/log/apache2
  + export LANG=C
  + export LANG
  + echo
  + APACHE2_MAINTSCRIPT_DEBUG=
  + [ -n  ]
  + [ -z configure ]
  + APACHE2_MAINTSCRIPT_NAME=sh
  + echo Invoked from an unrecognized maintainer script: exiting
  + return 1

The attached patch makes use of environment variables defined by dpkg.
(However it still does not fully solves my issues with dwww, as after
applying it, I'm getting:
  + [ 1 -eq 32 ]
  + APACHE2_NEED_ACTION=1
  + a2enconf -m -q dwww.conf
  + return 1
  + exit 1
it looks like dwww, not dwww.conf should be passed to a2enconf, but this
might be another issue in dh_apache2)

robert

Bug#711478: apache2-maintscript-helper should display messages on stderr instead of stdout

2013-06-07 Thread Robert Luberda
Package: apache2
Version: 2.4.4-5
Severity: normal

apache2-maintscript-helper should use stderr instead of stdout, as messages
written
on stdout are not shown when debconf is enabled, see the following snippnet of
debconf(7) man page:

  THE POSTINST SCRIPT

   * Avoid outputting anything to stdout in your postinst,
 since that can confuse debconf, and postinst should not
 be verbose anyway. Output to stderr is ok, if you must.

robert

Attaching simple patch for the issue (however the better option would be to use
DPKG_MAINTSCRIPT_* environment variables instead of the
APACHE2_MAINTSCRIPT_* ones).

Bug#711483: apache2-dev: dh-apache2 does not strip .conf extension

2013-06-07 Thread Robert Luberda
Package: apache2-dev
Version: 2.4.4-5
Severity: normal

The following path of dh-apache2:
if (! $file)
{
# do black magic only if there is no .apache2
# configuration file
find({  no_chdir = 1,
wanted = sub
{
my ($dir, $file) =
(dirname($File::Find::name), basename($File::Find::name));

 ...
  }

fails to strip any .conf, .load extension which results in not working
debhelper code snippets:

  # Automatically added by dh_apache2
  if true; then
if [ -e /usr/share/apache2/apache2-maintscript-helper ] ; then
. /usr/share/apache2/apache2-maintscript-helper
for conf in dwww.conf ; do
apache2_invoke enconf $conf  || exit $?
done
fi
  fi

The `apache2_invoke enconf $conf' line calls `a2enconf -m -q dwww.conf'
which fails with the following confusing error message:

  ERROR: Conf dwww.conf does not exist!

(The message is confusing because /etc/apache2/conf-available/dwww.conf
DOES exist)

Regards,
robert

Bug#711493: No default site enabled after fresh (re)install

2013-06-07 Thread Michael Biebl
Package: apache2
Version: 2.4.4-5
Severity: important

Hi,

since something went wrong during the upgrade (I've purged the
transitional packages during the upgrade process, leading to a
misconfigured apache configuration), I've decided to purge and
re-install apache2. After the upgrade, I had not default site enabled.
This is the purge and install log:
Btw, should this be considered a separate bug, that the /var directories
are not cleaned up on purge?

Bug#711493: No default site enabled after fresh (re)install

Depends on your point of view. I don't think so. You purge Apache
related packages, but you leave back reverse dependencies (e.g. you
still had mod-dnssd and php5 installed). These are left in config-file
state, and thus let back the conffiles they install into our directories.

Logs, however, are deliberately not purged.

Bug#711120: init script is silent

Hi Joey,

On 04.06.2013 22:45, Joey Hess wrote:
 The init script no longer outputs anything when starting or stopping the

looks like you hit a bull's eye here. See #710519, #683654 and #710571.
For now I'll make the script (a bit) more verbose by default and let
people come up with whatever they decide on a project-wide basis and
implement that later.

Bug#711534: Disabling strtoul violates C89 and C99 and is unnecessary

2013-06-07 Thread Matthew Vernon
Package: apache2-dev
Version: 2.4.4-2
Severity: serious
Tags: upstream

Hi,

httpd.h contains the following:

/** strtoul does not exist on sunos4. */
#ifdef strtoul
#undef strtoul
#endif
#define strtoul strtoul_is_not_a_portable_function_use_strtol_instead

i.e. apache intentionally breaks strtoul, a function defined in C89,
C99, SUS, etc. And SunOS 4 has been unsupported by Sun since 2003.

The apache2.2 packages in wheezy are similarly affected.

Yours,

Matthew

Point taken, but this is not a serious issue. I will fix it regardless
for the next upload to Sid, but I don't think we are going to change it
for Wheezy, but I let this up to sf to decide.

The following path of dh-apache2:

# configuration file
find({  no_chdir = 1,
wanted = sub
{
my ($dir, $file) =
(dirname($File::Find::name), basename($File::Find::name));

fails to strip any .conf, .load extension which results in not working
debhelper code snippets:

  # Automatically added by dh_apache2

if [ -e /usr/share/apache2/apache2-maintscript-helper ] ; then

The `apache2_invoke enconf $conf' line calls `a2enconf -m -q dwww.conf'
which fails with the following confusing error message:

  ERROR: Conf dwww.conf does not exist!

(The message is confusing because /etc/apache2/conf-available/dwww.conf
DOES exist)

The init script no longer outputs anything when starting or stopping the
daemon. This is rather disconcerting when one is trying to restart
apache to deal with massive changes to the configuration system. (It's
also probably a policy violation.)

The script may output something if VERBOSE is set, but that's not the
default, and that output seems more like debugging output.

Hi,

a test with piuparts revealed that your package misses the copyright
file after an upgrade, which is a violation of Policy 12.5:
http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-docs.html#s-copyrightfile

After the upgrade /usr/share/doc/$PACKAGE/ is just an empty directory.

This was observed on the following upgrade paths:

  testing - sid

From the attached log (scroll to the bottom...):

  MISSING COPYRIGHT FILE: /usr/share/doc/apache2.2-bin/copyright
  # ls -lad /usr/share/doc/apache2.2-bin
  drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 40 May 31 17:39 /usr/share/doc/apache2.2-bin
  # ls -la /usr/share/doc/apache2.2-bin/
  total 0
  drwxr-xr-x   2 root root   40 May 31 17:39 .
  drwxr-xr-x 105 root root 2220 May 31 17:39 ..

Additional info may be available here:
http://wiki.debian.org/MissingCopyrightFile

Note that dpkg intentionally does not replace directories with symlinks
and vice versa, you need the maintainer scripts to do this.
See in particular the end of point 4 in
http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-maintainerscripts.html#s-unpackphase

For switching from a directory to a symlink the *postinst* script
should do something like this:

DOCDIR=/usr/share/doc/@@PACKAGE@@
DOCLINK=@@OTHERPACKAGE@@

if [ -d $DOCDIR ]  [ ! -L $DOCDIR ]; then
rmdir $DOCDIR
ln -s $DOCLINK $DOCDIR
fi

For switching from a symlink to a directory, the *preinst* script
should do something like this:

DOCDIR=/usr/share/doc/@@PACKAGE@@

if [ -L $DOCDIR ]; then
rm $DOCDIR
fi

cheers,

Andreas

apache2-maintscript-helper should use stderr instead of stdout, as messages
written
on stdout are not shown when debconf is enabled, see the following snippnet of
debconf(7) man page:

  THE POSTINST SCRIPT

   * Avoid outputting anything to stdout in your postinst,
 since that can confuse debconf, and postinst should not
 be verbose anyway. Output to stderr is ok, if you must.

Package: apache2.2-bin
Version: 2.4.4-5
Severity: grave

The apache2.2-bin package formerly supplied only the binaries for the
Apache web server, and notably did *not* run a systemwide apache daemon.
However, the new apache2.2-bin transitional package depends on both
apache2-bin (the equivalent binaries-only package) and apache2 (the
system daemon package). Please don't do that; that will cause systems
with only apache2.2-bin installed to suddenly end up with a running
system web server after upgrade.

(I debated whether to open this as grave or just important, but I don't
think the new transitional package should transition to testing with
this bug present.)

dwww package has postinst script writtern in Perl and embeeds shell code added
by debhelper
 in the way described in the debhelper(7) man page:

   If you would like to embed it into a Perl script, here is one way
   to do that (note that I made sure that $1, $2, etc are set with the set
command):

 my $temp=set -e\nset -- @ARGV\n .  'EOF';
 #DEBHELPER#
 EOF
 system ($temp) / 256 == 0
   or die Problem with debhelper scripts: $!;

Unfortunatelly this does not work with apache2-maintainer-script, see
the following debugging output from `set -x':

  + [ -e /usr/share/apache2/apache2-maintscript-helper ]
  + . /usr/share/apache2/apache2-maintscript-helper
  + [ -n  ]
  + EXPORT_APACHE2_MAINTSCRIPT_HELPER=1
  + [ -n  ]
  + [ -e /etc/apache2/envvars ]
  + . /etc/apache2/envvars
  + unset HOME
  + [  !=  ]
  + SUFFIX=
  + export APACHE_RUN_USER=www-data
  + export APACHE_RUN_GROUP=www-data
  + export APACHE_PID_FILE=/var/run/apache2/apache2.pid
  + export APACHE_RUN_DIR=/var/run/apache2
  + export APACHE_LOCK_DIR=/var/lock/apache2
  + export APACHE_LOG_DIR=/var/log/apache2
  + export LANG=C
  + export LANG
  + echo
  + APACHE2_MAINTSCRIPT_DEBUG=
  + [ -n  ]
  + [ -z configure ]
  + APACHE2_MAINTSCRIPT_NAME=sh
  + echo Invoked from an unrecognized maintainer script: exiting
  + return 1

The attached patch makes use of environment variables defined by dpkg.
(However it still does not fully solves my issues with dwww, as after
applying it, I'm getting:
  + [ 1 -eq 32 ]
  + APACHE2_NEED_ACTION=1
  + a2enconf -m -q dwww.conf
  + return 1
  + exit 1
it looks like dwww, not dwww.conf should be passed to a2enconf, but this
might be another issue in dh_apache2)

robert

Hi,

httpd.h contains the following:

/** strtoul does not exist on sunos4. */
#ifdef strtoul
#undef strtoul
#endif
#define strtoul strtoul_is_not_a_portable_function_use_strtol_instead

i.e. apache intentionally breaks strtoul, a function defined in C89,
C99, SUS, etc. And SunOS 4 has been unsupported by Sun since 2003.

The apache2.2 packages in wheezy are similarly affected.

Yours,

Matthew

   * Fix spurious warnings in the Apache2 bug report script (Closes: #711121,
 #711480)
   * Strip off file extensions from arguments to a2(en|dis)(site|conf|mod) so
 that a2ensite 000-default.conf works, as well as a2ensite 000-default
 (Closes: #711494)
   * Fix apache2-dev: dh-apache2 does not strip .conf extension for modules
 relying on the install heuristic, instead of writing an *.apache2 conf
 file (Closes: #711483)
   * Apply patch submitted by Robert Luberda and redirect all output of
 apache2-maintscript-helper to stderr (Closes: #711478)
   * Tell about essential operations in the init script (Closes: #711120)
   * Fix indentation mess in the init script, and add modelines
   * Make sure /etc/init.d/apache2 reload does not always return. Thanks to
 Thorsten Glaser for suggesting a patch (Closes: #77)
   * Make apache2-maintscript-helper usable when sourced from weird
 environments (e.g. Perl maintainer scripts). Thanks to Robert Luberda
 for doing unexpected things, and providing patches for it, and to Axel
 Beckert for demangling shell specifics (Closes: #711479)
   * Fix copyright file missing after upgrade (policy 12.5) and add these for
 MPM transitional packages (Closes: #710914)
   * Fix apache2.2-bin transitional package (binaries only) should not
 depend on apache2 package (which runs a system daemon). This happened by
 accident added by debhelper since we are linking docs. We do to
 apache2-bin instead (Closes: #711127)
   * Refresh upstream-fixes patch
   * Fix Disabling strtoul violates C89 and C99 and is unnecessary by
 removing the symbol override in httpd.h(Closes: #711534)

Bug#711493: No default site enabled after fresh (re)install

 I cannot reproduce this in a clean chroot.

Try this in a clean chroot:

apt-get install apache2 phpmyadmin
dpkg --purge apache2 apache2-data
apt-get install apache2
→ /etc/apache2/sites-enabled is empty

my guess is, that postinst get's confused by the phpmyadmin / existing
configuration.
