I'm booting off a SCSI device, so I doubt it's going to work any
better. Or do you mean just try it and see if it breaks in a different
spot instead?

Your installation manual requests that I submit a bug report if I
can't get it to work. It's not like I'm demanding that you fix this.
(And I'm sorry if I'm restating the obvious here.)

 > Have you tried Tom's Boot Disk?

No, I hadn't heard about it. I'll look around for it. (Found it
already actually.) Thanks for the pointer.

Meanwhile, Nathan had some promising suggestions about upgrading the
Flash BIOS (thanks pal) which I'll probably try first. I'll try to
keep you posted.

Thanks,

I just checked something into cvs. it's in tools/udpkg

It's really still very incomplete. It "supports deps" right now only in the
sense that it will check dependencies against installed/to-be-installed-with-
same-command packages. it doesn't do any of the ordering stuff yet,
although the hooks are there. Dependency checking can be turned off
completely at compile time as well.

As I mentioned above, it's still very incomplete. Feel free to
contribute changes, etc. I am exploring how to best handle the files
that go into /var/lib/dpkg/info/ in particular the list file is
ugly... i'm thinking of doing something like (+ error checking, etc):

FILE *infp, *outfp;
char buf[MAXLEN];
char *p;
infp = popen("ar p foobar.deb control.tar.gz | zcat | tar -tf -");
outfp = fopen("/var/lib/dpkg/info/foobar.list");
while (fgets(buf, sizeof(buf), inp) && !feof(inp))
{
p = buf; if (*p == '.') p++;
fputs(p, outp);
}
fclose(outfp);
pclose(infp);

Gross

Suggestions and code contributions welcome :>

Yes, I apparently have the same problem. I bought Debian 2.2 CD-Rs from

Re: Anyone else have CheapBytes CD trouble?

2000-08-23 Thread Nate Amsden

Yes, i had a similar problem over a year ago with Slink(2.1) i got a 2
cd set and not only did they only send me 1 cd out of the 2, the 1 cd
they sent was useless, it was FULL of curropted archives.

cheapbytes is cheap shit, they will never get my business again(they
never returned calls or emails about my stuff), i suggest using
www.linuxmall.com if you want cheap linux cds(i haven't had any problems
with them yet) also i'd avoid CDRd cds as well as they are sometimes
difficult to read in normal cdroms, getting the "real" pressed cds can
take several weeks from release but it is worth the wait.

Anyone else have CheapBytes CD trouble?

2000-08-23 Thread Eric Hanchrow

I just received my Debian 2.2 CDs from Cheapbytes -- 3 binary
CD-ROMS. I could not boot off the first one (the installation program
complained that it couldn't mount the rescue image).

I decided to run `md5sum' on each file on the CD-ROM, and compare its
output with the file /cdrom/md5sum.txt. I was surprised to find that
they differed. Here's how I did it:

(cd /cdrom; find . -type f -print0 | xargs -0 md5sum)

Here's one file whose sum isn't what the md5sum file says it should be
(there are many other such files):

7eea9e34469920cf5b3de06e527186bb
./dists/potato/main/disks-i386/2.2.16-2000-07-14/images-1.44/rescue.bin
dc8e866f3a26cfa8a38f15d328519c92
./dists/potato/main/disks-i386/2.2.16-2000-07-14/images-1.44/rescue.bin

Some of the files seem to be random data; one file whose name ends in
`.tgz' is actually text.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I don't quite understand the bug. What is writing to the fstab table?
Can this be formulated as a buf report?

It's just a question of phrasing. Like, "yes, I would like the faster

Using which set of install disks? We need to know this because this
is almost always a kernel/pcmcia bug, not a boot-floppies bug.

I tried every methord of installing but it froze every time at the same spot.

It froze at line: md driver 0.36.3 MAX_MD_DEV=4, MAX_REAL=8

I got the furthest by booting from the second disk.
It installed the base system but when I booted from the floppy(I choose to
boot from floppy instead of from hard disk) it froze at the md line.

I am totally new to linux or unix, so any direction you give me please keep

You reported a bug on Slink, but that distribution is no longer
supported. Please use the Potato (2.2) distribution.

If you have booting problems, please try the -idepci and -compact

and I started loadlin without the configuration files of w98.

All OK until dbootstrap arrives to "installing kernel and modules".

Selecting the installation from a no-mounted disk. The installation can't
go on because the program ask for the file resc1440-2.0.38.bin, that
doesn't exist on my HD (exist resc1440.bin). It continue asking for this
file, that asoluteli doesn't exist on the HD

I tried to rename resc1440.bin to resc1440-2.0.38.bin, but it doesn't
resolve. All continue as before.

The situation is igual even if the first, w98, partition is mounted.
dbootstrap keeps asking for resc1440-2.0.38.bin.

How may I find a little help to resolve my problem and install debian
linux?

Buon giubileo!

Try the 'potato' installation system. The bug you reported is
against Slink, which is no longer supported.

That's good.

The error you get:

Maybe bad ram?

I mean, if you can't boot linux you can't boot and there's probably

Did you try anXious ? did that fail for you? That should help you
pick an X server.

If that doesn't work (there are a lot of video cards it doesn't know
about) then you might need to manually figure out which xserver you
need for your video card and install that.

I will try to check occasionally, but as the Hurd distribution is in an early
stage, we don't have a concrete picture on how the final install will look
like. However, we will have a base system just like linux has, and we will
have a boot disk, but we will need an extra root disk, too. (You are right
that a complete system doesn't fit on one floppy).

If you keep the individual steps in the installer modular, it should be
straightforward to replace some of them with hurd specific ones, leave out
others and add our own.

Thanks,

That's a valid point. You should probably point this out to
debian-doc, where we deal with generalities of debian documnetation,
perhaps file a bug against the faq (not even sure the pkg name), etc.?

I hope I don't give the wrong impression. I applaud your desire to
improve debian for the rest of us. I just have a lot of bugs to deal

Well we discussed it, and found cases where questions do have to be
asked in the postinst if the package needs to be able to reliably handle
failure cases.

I agree, I think it will be useful to be able to make the postinsts of
the installer's packages use debconf. Preconfiguration is not
particularly useful on the installer.

I disagree. Debconf can currently handle both situations, and the
debconf used on the installer should be able to as well. It doesn't
really take any additional code to support this.

I've heard plans to make the hurd always use linux to install. I
don't think it's gonna fit on a floppy.. (On the other hand, perhaps a
hurd install from CD might be doable.)

I hope there are hurd folks on this list (debian-boot). We're

udpkg is going to be used for the former. Maybe the latter too, but
definitely the former.

It looks like we should probably get further along on the redesign
so we can begin to get some better idea of what udpkg needs to be able
to do. Maybe we don't need dependencies. Maybe we do.

(FWIW, Randolph is working on some 9 or 10k udpkg that does support

Documenting this step is important since it seems that it jumps into

BTW I read the following at
http://www.linuxplanet.com/linuxplanet/reviews/2204/3/

Once the kernel modules are properly installed, the user has to set some
network configuration options, including naming the machine, and
providing information about their PPP or ethernet connection. The
installation manual lapses briefly at this point, but if the user
gathered the appropriate information from the system administrator (or
knows it off the top of his/her head), it's simple enough to configure
things properly. This step can also be skipped if a working connection to
the network isn't required to complete installation.

I wonder if we can fix the `brief lapse' in the installation manual...

You'll need to supply more information. What is failing with umsdos.o?

Once you're able to mount, mount it on /target, the install routine
will accept that later.

I installed potato into a file using loop (mount -o loop /mnt/file /target)
today, so this works, proven.

It's not supported from scratch.

Provide proper patches :)

If you find a way to move it around (if the floppies are too full)
sure.

Since some internal information is required, it's the proper one.

The POST says 1024k base, 48128KB extended (?), and 256k cache. (The
message flashes by so fast I can't catch what exactly it's saying.)

BIOS says System Memory 640KB, Extended Memory 47MB, Cache Size 256KB,
Shadow RAM 384KB; System ROM F000h-h. The video card also has
1024KB of memory (obviously?)

If it matters at all, BIOS also tells me, under Product Data:

  Machine Type/Model 8640MY0
  Flash EEPROM Revision Level BUKT10AUS
  System Board Identifier 13LLN2AD48R
  System Serial Number553L2D8
  BIOS Date 10/27/95

The 256KB cache is enabled, the PCI slot interrupts (#1 and #2) are
set up on "auto-select" (should I do this by hand? I get to choose the
IRQs myself if I want to) and I've basically disabled all the ROM
shadowing (not a lot of it was enabled anyway; I think I turned off
the video shadowing but all the others were already disabled).

documentation. If there's something I absolutely need to have I'd

I think there is enough space on the boot floppies to include ftp on it. It
would be nice to be able to get the base system tarball via ftp instead of
needing an NFS server around.

Also: Why do the boot-floppies require a driver disk? There are certainly
situations where I do not need any drivers from the driver disk. Could
the driver disk be gotten via FTP or so too?

The CD-ROm boots directly into the rescue disk. But how does it then get the
driver disk?

The boot-floppies now support HTTP for the base system which is
more comfortable, I believe.

You can skip the drivers disk or install it via fd0/fd1/mounted/harddisk.
If you only need a couple of drivers you can load them from an extra disk
as well (from 2.2.17 and newer, not released yet)

I know how to do that. A naive user who is getting acquainted with
Unix in general and Debian in particular is probably completely
ignorant about backup tools and procedures. My point is that while the
Debian handbook (or whatever it's called) says a lot about how you get
up and running, and stay that way, it doesn't even mention making
backups.

Installing into DOS partition

2000-08-23 Thread Maisenbacher Matthias (K3/EMW4) *

Hi,

I was already asking this in debian-user, but nobody semmed to care.
Now:

I tried to install potato into a DOS partition.
First try: umsdos

I copied umsdos.o into /tmp ann loaded it into the kernel,
but mount (in the boot flavour) wasn't able to mount -t umsdos.
When i (copied into /tmp and) tried the normal mount i got
problems because of the version of glibc.

Second try: loop file system

No modules needed, but same problem with mount.

Did i make any mistakes or is it really impossible to install Debian into a
DOS partition?
Are there already any thoughts about improving that?
Could I (until a Debian solution) use a statically linked mount?

   Matthias Maisenbacher

If this is the wrong list, please forgive
and point me to the right one.

Well, then, I stil don't understand what you are reporting.

My point is that if you want backup software, you install it. There
are plenty of backup packages in Debian -- try 'apt-cache search
backup'.

Use the CVS version, that works, just tested it 10secs ago.

Bug#69793: IBM PC Server 320 (MCA/PCI Pentium) cannot boot

2000-08-23 Thread era eriksson

Package: boot-floppies
Version: (potato

architecture: i386
model:IBM PC Server 320
memory: 48MB
scsi: AIC-7870
cd-rom: ... it just says IBM CDRM0103 or something like that (SCSI #6)
network card: (yes; dunno exactly)
pcmcia: N/A
video:Cirrus Logic GD-54xx VGA
disk: IBM DFHSS2F 2150 Mb (SCSI #0)
cpu: single P90 (second processor slot free) [could be P75: see below]

I bought this system second hand (original vintage 1995 circa :-), so
I don't really have any manuals. I've been looking in the BIOS
settings etc to find out as much as possible, but some of this is pure
guesswork.

Apparently the system is MCA but there's PCI too.

The system freezes rather early in the boot process. I'm using the
Potato CD images (tried both disk 1 and 2) downloaded perhaps a week
ago (by a friend -- don't know exactly from where).

I have tried a Debian 2.1 floppy and that one got significantly
farther into the boot process before freezing (with no useful message;
looked like the other MCA incompatible installations I've tried
[OpenBSD install floppy; FreeBSD or something too]). It just stops
doing things and sits there. But I gather that one isn't even supposed
to work on MCA machines.

With the 2.2 CD, booting off the CD, I get a panic-like message which
tells me explicitly how wrong things are. I cannot figure out how to
proceed from here. Any tips would be most valuable.

I have typed in what I could from the screen but there may be typos ...

This was produced with "boot: linux aic7xxx=no_probe". I have tried
without this option, and tried some other options, too; details below.

- end typed-in "screen shot" -

Specifying the mca-pentium boot option doesn't make any difference.
(The FPU coupling test is skipped, it says "No FDIV bug? Lucky you ..."
but other than that, I see no difference.)

Disabling the hlt check (specifying the option no-hlt) doesn't make
any difference.

Optimistically trying the (made up) option no-posix doesn't affect
anything either :-)

(Incidentally, the screen goes blank after some time and there doesn't
appear to be any way to turn it back on. This didn't happen with the
2.1 floppy.)

I've tried turning off ROM shadowing of the video area at c-c7fff
but this didn't matter either.

I looked in the BIOS settings for other stuff which looked relevant
for the error message above but couldn't find anything pertaining to
addresses around 101000 (though there was something around f) or
daf1.

I have other machines available nearby so I can try to run over a
serial console to capture any significant messages before these (but
it's a bit of a hassle for me).

Any hints? I'm not a hardware/kernel person so be gentle ... Thanks!

/* era */

I will gladly trade this monster for something more or less equivalent
that works with U*x-like free operating systems. :-)

The guy who sold it didn't exactly give me a guarantee that it would
work with Linux but I did ask, and I guess I could force him to take
it back ...

The "Pentium 75" is a bit puzzling because while BIOS and the guy who
sold it say it's a 90MHz model, Debian and the tech spec page I found
on IBM's web server say 75MHz. Hmm.

No, I have not translated those (and I don't think they even exist). I do
not have time to do that, I have concentrated on translating the actual
floppies, since I think it is better to translate those than to translate
the documentation, if there is a selection to be made.

Bug#69786: Documentation - important

2000-08-23 Thread Martin Schulze

Package: boot-floppies
Version: current

The following issues need to be documented. I'm writing this bug report
only because it should not be forgotten...

1. The meaning of the "<...>"-button in the getDirBox()-dialog

2. Preload modules from floppy, the first step by gemorin

3. Please check "choose directory within that medium that contains the
Debian archive. In slink you had to choose a directory within the
mounted dir/partition/medium. With 2.2.16 that was buggy and you'd
had do enter /instmnt/foo/bar/debian, in 2.2.17 it will be within
   the mounted dir/partition/medium/whatever again.

4. Using an arbitrary device to install on. I don't think this is
documented already. You can mount anything to /target and
dbootstrap will continue. This is required if you want to use some
random raid system that isn't supported otherwise or if you want to
use raid0/1/5 for your filesystem (enter the 2nd console,
initialize it, mount it to /target, go back to the 1st and
   continue)

Regards,

Joey

Hi,

when installing the base system by nfs, one gets a dialog box
"Choose Debian archive path".

There is a "<...>"-field on the right side of the box. It remains
unclear what this entry field is good for.

Well, what do you expect? Looks like "more options" or something.
Just try it. I agree, we could use 'browse' but that would be three
chars more... Since the dialog is already somewhat wide, I'd rather
leave it that way. (or use 'dir')

I'm trying to install Potato on a Proliant 400 with a Smart Array RAID

At boot, the Potato CD do not see the card.

The server is equiped with 3 disks using RAID 5. No disk on the
motherboard SCSI port. The RAID card is on first PCI bus close to the ISA
bus and the system say: Slot 4

Proliant bios version: F01
Smart RAID Card Firware Revision: 4.16

I tested the logical unit with the Compaq diagnostic and all seems to be
fine. The Compaq utility CD well created the Compaq partition on the
logical disk.

Is-it normal? I supposed that this RAID card was well supported. Do we
have a way to "force" lilo to discover the card at boot?
