Sparc, i386; dunno about m68k testing but they have a build.

So -- I need to wait for new debootstrap 0.1.15 w/o the 'seq'

Someone needs to help me so I trigger the next boot-floppies build at

hrm, i'm installing off the floppies now and it's working. so if what

cdrom, i'll try it on another system and see what happens.

I toasted the DOS partition, but every time I've seen transaction
block size errors, I had a bad root disk (floppy or image).

i eventually figured out that if you boot off the second cd you get the
compact kernel (doh ... been usign debian 5 years and never needed this
before). so it now recognises the controller, but if still fails with a
kernel panic after it recognises ida/c0d0 and finds two eepro100's (i have
to type it in but it looks like this unless i made a typo):

Partition check:
  ida/c0d0: ida/c0d0o3
[MS-DOS FS Rel. 12,FAT 0,check=n,conv=b,uid=0,gid=0,umask=022,bmap]
[me=0x0,cs=0,#f=0,fs=0.fl=0,ds ... blah blah
Transaction block size = 512
[MS-DOS FS Rel. 12,FAT 0,check=n,conv=b,uid=0,gid=0,umask=022,bmap]
[me=0x0,cs=0,#f=0,fs=0.fl=0,ds ... blah blah
Transaction block size = 512
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 01:00

any ideas? right now my guess is that it's the compaq smart start
partition that's screwing it up so i'm gonna try and delete that,
re-configure it via the bios interface and see what happens.

You need to be using the compact flavor boot-floppies. Download the
root.bin and rescue.bin images from the following.

You can get by with those two if you want to grab the drivers and
modules off the net. You can install base off the cd or the net,
whatever.

The integrated smart raid controller and the eepro100 network drivers
are built-in, so you can pretty much go right into normal operations
with this kernel. However, it's not SMP, so if you have another cpu,
you'll want to install another kernel after you get things online.

I have 3 DL360s, all runnin' real pretty like.

Good Luck!

Boot disk doesn't recognize Compaq DL360's RAID controller

2001-06-28 Thread Adam Shand

I'm trying to install Debian on a Compaq Proliant DL360 with the
integrated smart raid controller.

The error message I get is on boot up:

scsi : 0 hosts.
scsi : detaected total.
Partition check:
apm: BIOS not found.
VFS: Cannot open root device 00:00
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 00:00

I am very familiar with Debian (but not with Compaq hardware or hardware
RAID). It does work with a stock Redhat 7.1 CD but I really don't want to
use Redhat.

I see some mention of similar problems in the archives but they are all
followed up with fixes to CVS. I'm using a 2.2rev3 CD.

Any ideas?

Adam.

installing potato on a dinosaurus ;-)

2001-06-28 Thread Mickaël

Dear Gurus,

I write you as I'm desesparate !
Debian Linux is my favorite distrib since it's the only free and
transparent one. Making a server using it is simply stable and
evolutive.

Today, i've got a new ARCHAIC i486SX notebook with only 8 MB of RAM I
would turn into a network diag station using Potato.
Great, that's ok ... but the installation help mention clearly the need
of 12 MB of RAM ! I've tried to install it, ignoring this, but I've some
problem when the kernel tries to free some memory pages (it complains
ever and ever, installing is then impossible).

I wouldn't install anything else but Potato, so what can I do. what are
the tips and tricks ? Is there no solutions to install my favorite OS on
such hardware limited machines (it was so pleasant to recycle my old
machines by the past with a full multi-user OS) ? or would I change to
FreeBSD instead (even if FreeBSD is a great one, I would be sad if my
dear Potato wouldn't install) ?

Great thanks by advance for any help.

'current' Woody disks missing pcmcia modules.

2001-06-28 Thread Reid Sutherland

Hi guys,

I've been REALLY horny to install Debian on my laptop for ages
now and I just noticed some nice disks sitting in woody's dir. I tried
them, and woohoo updated pcmcia-cs to fix my Xircom CBE problems, but
where's the drivers?!?!

What do I need to do to get the drivers so I can install the rest of the
system via apt-get?

Thanks much,

Reid

What's the entry in the Packages file for adduser? The Filename: field should
look like

Filename: pool/main/a/adduser/adduser_*

. Does it? What's the layout exactly?

/cdrom
debian -> .
pool/
...
dists/
woody/
main/binary-i386/Packages.gz
woody-secure/
main/binary-i386/Packages.gz

? Or something different?

Cheers,
aj

Yes, they do. "debian" is a symlink to "." ... so in fact pool/ and
debian/pool/ are the same directory.

i commited a fix for it, powerpc should have debootstrap tomorrow now
that the buildd builds it. other archs need to catch up anyway. (who

Worse, it uses 'seq' which is not included in root.bin

debootstrap-0.1.14 breaks boot-floppies

2001-06-28 Thread Richard Hirst

0.1.14 has done away with woody.debs and sid.debs again, so
references to them need removing from scripts/rootdisk/SMALL_BASE_LIST_all.
I havn't committed a fix, as i386 is the only one with a 0.1.14 deb
atm.

adduser is the first package debootstrap tries to fetch, so if things
are borked from the start you always get a message `cannot download
adduser' which can be a bit misleading in some circumstances.

debootstrap uses the Packages file to locate packages, is the Packages
file present? is it also properly refernced in the Release file?
debootstrap uses the Release file to find the Packages file.

also check that the path listed in the Packages file is accurate
(relative to the root of the CD).

its also possible that dbootstrap is broken, choose_medium.c is a
giant rat hole... but from your log message the debootstrap
invocation looks correct (CDs don't have the /debian directory do they?)

most (all?) of us i think have been testing with network and hard disk/nfs
installs rather then CDs...

Nope. The CD is mounted on /instmnt, I can find the adduser package with
find...

OK, but I don't know what counts, so questions please ;)

I did a "linear" install, always choosing the CD method. It is -of course-
possible, that I messed up something...

adduser is on the first CD, can someone confirm ?

And I guess that adduser is the first base package that debootstrap tries
to get, so it may not be related to debian-cd ... maybe something totally
different like nothing mounted on /instmnt ...

Check with debian-boot and aj, explain what you did, eventually what you
skipped in the process. The problem is not with debian-cd I guess.

Other people had success, you must do something different from the others
that'd explain it. Do you try to get the base from the CD or from the
network ?
