Is it possible to create a testing/unstable CD using debian-cd? Dumb

Please, *enough* with the FUD already. No one's doing anything of the
sort --- no one's even suggesting we do anything of the sort.

Why would you think that? All I've said is I don't have the bandwidth
to build these things and upload them. No one else seems to be at all
interested in doing anything about it, either.

I'm not sure I agree here: being able to do installs onto CD-less machines
without an Internet connection by copying files from a machine with a
CD across a LAN to an existing Windows install doesn't seem an entirely
unreasonable thing to want.

Which is all very well, but no one seems interested in doing anything
about it. The script to create the basedebs tarballs was earlier in this
thread (well, on -testing and -boot). It's really not complicated.

aj

is more floppyies needed other than rescue & root.bin?

2001-08-18 Thread Joe Heuring

Objective. to do an ftp install off of the rescue and root.bin
 floppies.

Hello, I am trying a new install via rescue.bin 2.2.17-reiserfs, from
 kernel-image-2.2.17-reserfs_2.2.17pre6

This floppy correctly sees my nic card as it displays:

3c59x.c 16AUG00 Donald Becker and others
http://www.scyld.com/network/vortex.htm ---before it prompts me for
 the rescue root.bin

The root.bin creates the file system no problem but then says it does
not recognize my nic card and that I should put in a floppy that
contains the driver. As I had understood it, it should already be
loaded. I haven't made it past this point yet but it also doesn't look
good to do an ftp install using these two floppies.

Are there any more floppies I should use or am I missing an obvious
 step?

 Any help appreciated. Thank you.

If it has a RH system installed, you should be able to install Debian from a CD
as well, no?

Re: Still no base tarball

2001-08-18 Thread Dale Scheetz

Thank you for understanding my concerns.

As a case in point, today's experience with a friend:

My neighbor was given a "junk" SCSI based P90 machine. It will not boot
from the CD, so that path is out. It will not boot a Debian rescue disk.
(I haven't figured out whether it is disabled in hardware, or the LILO
install requires an ext2 file system on the boot floppy. My next step
there, is to build a LILO based boot disk as I think the boot process is
chaining to an expected LILO on the floppy...)

It has a RH system installed, and if we can get the root password I can
hack a Debian system into the machine through the floppy. If I can get a
boot floppy to work I'll be able to hack the root password out of the
system and proceed from there, but I may have to move the SCSI drive to my
machine to do that...

Anyway, even with a lot of luck, I'm going to need a set of floppies with
boot, root, and drivers disks and the base system, either on floppies, or
quicker by toasting a CD with the base tarball.

Putting all that asside, the CD install is not available before a release,
so the testing group must resort to more primative methods to bootstrap
the system in an attempt to test the install before it is released.

If we had a way to distribute pre-release CDs to the testing group, that
problem would be solved, but I'm not in favor of Debian becoming a CD only
distribution for single user new installs.

Please, lets not restrict freedom of access to Debian by retiring a well
used and still useful workhorse. It's something we have always done in the
past, so you can't argue it is too difficult to impliment. For restricted
circumstances, a set of links to the base .deb files that defines the
current "base" system might work, although there are Win based starting
points that will not work without the tarball, so that _is_ extra work,
and I'm not really advocating it...

Thanks for your time,

Yes, exactly that bug. The problem is that the modules are not
present in the /target/lib/modules/2.2.19/pcmcia directory (in
fact, there is no pcmcia directory). I had been bitten by this
bug and I saw at least one more person report it to
debian-boot (which I now subscribe).

I haven't seen any comments regarding the fix, though.

To make *my* matters worse, my card (a vanilla Realted-8139
based PCMCIA card, whose manufacturer has not even included
its name on the package) is not supported with the standard
pcmcia-cs package. On the other hand, recompiling a new 2.4.9
stock kernel with in-kernel PCMCIA support and enabling the
8193too module seems to work fine.

I guess that since 8139-based cards are so common, it would be
good if the boot-floppies included support for them "out of
the box" (Red Hat 7.1 does, althought I didn't see what
solution they have adopted).

Since Debian always supports a wide range of software (many
platforms etc), I guess that things will be worked out in the
meantime.

And I have already offered my help to the boot floppies team.
:-)

fine since aj won't explain it i will.

base tarballs are obsolete and deprecated, period.

the ONLY time a base tarball should be used to install the base system
is for hard disk based installs. it should never be used for CD
installs, or network installs, ever.

for CD installs and network installs debootstrap simply uses the
normal debian archive, that is the .debs found in the pool and the apt
Packages/Release files in dists/woody/binary-* for CDs all necessary
packages will be on CD1, for the network everything is there
obviously.

so the basedebs.tgz file should NOT be present on offcial Debian CDs,
nor should it be used for CD based installs. dbootstrap or
debootstrap will never download the basedebs.tgz file from the
network, if you have network connectivity the real debian archive will
be used, NOT a base tarball.

that leaves hard disk installs (installing from files on a FAT or HFS
partition) generally its unlikly that the user will have a debian
mirror on their harddisk, since its basically impossible given the
crippled nature of those filesystems. in those cases they will
download a basedebs.tgz (from where has yet to be determined),
drivers.tgz and other b-f files manually with whatever downloading
software comes with the proprietary OS in use. when they select a
hard disk based install method dbootstrap will first see there is no
debian mirror, then it will check for a basedebs.tgz in whatever
directory the user specified (that is if they specify /debian,
dbootstrap will check for /debian/basedebs.tgz).

reasons a hard disk install might be desired are:

* lack of CDs
* lack of CDROM
* lack of decent network connection (read the connection requires junk
  like ppp or pppoe)

futhermore basedebs.tgz does not contain a root filesystem, all it
contains is /var/cache/apt/archives (with all the .debs that make up
the base system) and /var/lib/apt/lists (with the Packages files).

the base tarball should never be used on CDs, nor should it be present
on them.

debootstrap should use the normal debian archive found on CD1.

bootfloppy changes for s390

2001-08-18 Thread Gerhard Tonn

Hi,
I am going to check in some changes for s390, so that we can upload the
binary package within the next days.

There are two changes that touch common code:

Since the console for s390 supports only line mode, we need a telnet session
for root in order to run dbootstrap. The passwd of the ramdisk has "/root" as
home directory and bash as login shell, but neither exists on the ramdisk.

Could we fix it by adding "/root" and changing bash to sh?

The disk formatting utilities for s390 are called dasdfmt and fdasd instead
of fdisk. Is it okay to grep for "fdisk\|fdasd\|dasdfmt" instead of fdisk in
documentation/Makefile, when the fdisk flavour is determined?

A final question is whether I have CVS write access as Debian developer or if
could get it.

Thanks,
Gerhard
