Bug#108103: boot-floppies: No tftp images are provided for the i386 architecture

2001-09-12 Thread Jonathan David Amery

David Kimdon writes:
 Hello Matthew and Jonathan,

I created pre-release i386 tftpboot images[1]. Can you test them? Can you
also document how to use them?

 http://people.debian.org/~dwhedon/tftpboot.img
 http://people.debian.org/~dwhedon/tftpboot-ide.img
 http://people.debian.org/~dwhedon/tftpboot-idepci.img
 http://people.debian.org/~dwhedon/tftpboot-compact.img

I'm afraid that the machine we were using has since been installed
into it's server-cupboard (three miles away) and hence isn't really
suitable for testing.

I'll look and see if we've got any other netboot capable i386es
around, but I don't think we do.

 Thanks,

  Jonathan.

Very strange, but this looks like a bug in Hercules to me.

I agree that the bug is probably in Hercules. I had hoped that someone else
here might have investigated the problem further. I can no longer reproduce
the problem reliably; sometimes, the format will complete successfully for a
600-cylinder volume, sometimes not.

I am also continuing to track down the update-alternatives problem that I
and others have experienced under Hercules.

Bug#99185: Problem installing Potato on an Amiga 1200

2001-09-12 Thread peter karlsson

Anyhow, even if you don't want to actually re-install or whatever, you
can at least boot with the 3.0.x install system and get far enough
(without initializing or anything) just to check to see if it can find
 your partitions. Should be non-destructive.

I can't get it to work. My severely limited AmigaOS skills won't get me
to get the StartInstall script startable (I thought protect
StartInstall rwe would do the trick), but anyway, if I run the command
listed in the file (the amiboot-5.6 thing), I get error messages:

kan ej finna objektet (that's: cannot find object)
CD failed: returncode 20

I downloaded the amigainstall.tar.gz file and untarred it on a
directory on my WB disk. Do I need to do more? My old install guide for
potato only lists that file and base2_2.tgz, but that one is obviously
not needed for woody.

[fw: Bug#112090: [PROPOSAL]: support reduced footprint debs at build time]

2001-09-12 Thread David Kimdon

Hi,

This is a change I have proposed to policy that I hope will improve the way
we handle special .deb, like those that we need for boot-floppies and
debian-installer, see below.

Comments welcome,

David

Package: debian-policy
Version: 3.5.5.0
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

The purpose of this change is to give Debian a more elegant way of
handling reduced footprint debs. Rather than including
special-purpose binaries in the archive (the status quo), I suggest we
support hooks in source packages that produce size optimized versions.

If this change is applied then the following hacks can be fixed:

 - remove the e2fsprogs-bf, amiga-fdisk-bf and the proposed
reiserfsprogs-bf packages from the archive. Instead the
boot-floppies build system would build these packages from source.
(Note that it may be too late to actually do this to woody
boot-floppies. We could save some space by building optimized
versions of every package that we use on boot-floppies, maybe this
   makes sense.)

 - remove udeb's from the archive. The debian-installer build system
will instead build the packages from source.

Last but not least, we will be able to support embedded versions of
many other packages that aren't used by either install system. This
will make it easier to use Debian on embedded systems.

Debian is, after all, the 'Universal Operating System'.

David

[i18n] LC works again (well, kind of)

2001-09-12 Thread Marcin Owsiany

Hi!

Finally I managed to get dbootstrap to run in a bterm and
properly display all fonts.

However the right-hand-side edges of the boxes are not
displayed. Also some messages seem to have linebreaks in wrong
places (e.g. jp translation) - this might be either broken
translations or dbootstrap's/newt's fault. It would be nice if
someone with knowledge of dbootstrap/newt/whatever internals
could look into it (and hopefully invent a fix! :-).

An i386 2.88MB image I produced is available at
http://people.debian.org/~porridge/resc2880compact.bin

For those, who would like to make their own image, here's the
recipe (I know that some of the steps are unacceptable for
regular use. They will be solved (hopefully) if we know that LC
really works OK):

1. cvs update -dPR
2. patch LC.diff (attached to this post)
3. remove slang from your archive directory
4. put slang1_1.4.4-2_$arch.deb to your archive directory
5. put libnewt-utf8-0_0.50.17-6_$arch.deb to your archive directory
6. set offline_mode to true (in config)
7. install libnewt-utf8-0, libnewt-utf8-pic, libnewt-dev
8. remove libnewt-pic
9. downgrade to slang{,-dev,-pic}_1.4.4-2
10. make utils resc2880compact.bin

good luck!

Marcin
