Bug#113444: 3.0.14 reiserfs dbootstrap failure

2001-09-24 Thread Jeremiah H. Savage

Package: boot-floppies
Version: 3.0.14

I just attempted to install Sid from reiser boot floppies obtained from

http://people.debian.org/~aph/debian/dists/woody/main/disks-i386/current/images-1.44/reiserfs/
dated 23-Sep-2001 16:03

and received the following errors after the first set of packages were
http downloaded and umcompressed:

Sep 24 22:47:48 (none) user.err dbootstrap[53]: Failure trying to run:
chroot /target mount -t proc proc /proc
Sep 24 22:48:40 (none) user.err dbootstrap[53]: debootstrap exited with
an error (return value 1)

System is a PII-400.

install report 3.0.14-2001-09-23

2001-09-24 Thread Glenn McGrath

Hi

I successfully installed using the standard flavour of 3.0.14 on a k6-2,
its looking good.

I partitioned with cfdisk, installed the kernel modules then did a network
install.

A couple of minor points.

1. Just after the kernel boots screens of text flashed by, which i assume
case the following message to apear twice in another window.
runaway modprobe loop assumed and stopped

2. The extended partition created using cfdisk appears under view partition
table as type "System V", which is incorrect.

3. debootstrap failed three times, i restarted it and it continued
downloading from where it stopped, i usually dont drop connections, so im
not sure, but maybe its a problem with the down program debootsrap uses (is
it busybox wget ?)

4. After debootstrap finished the background screen wasnt refreshed and
seemed to contain bits of messages from an old screen.

As i said these are all minor, and didnt cause me any problems.

Glenn

Bug#113424: modconf: Brazilian portuguese modconf translation doesn't get applied

2001-09-24 Thread Andre Luis Lopes

Package: modconf
Version: 0.2.34
Severity: important

As the latest modconf's package changelog states :

(...)

* Brazilian portuguese translation contributed by
  Andre Luis Lopes <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> (closes: Bug#113200)

(...)

However, it doesn't seems to be working fine out-of-the-box.

I guess the problem should be the translated file being named eval_br
when it should really be named eval_pt_BR. My LANG environment variable
is correctly set and all my localized installed software is showing
brazilian portuguese messages when available.

Actually, modconf's messages still being in the default C locale, using
the messages from the default eval_C file.

Too bloated for the powerpc boot floppies perhaps, but not for x86, arm, mips,
alpha, sparc, s390, etc Maybe we should take a look at whats wrong with
powerpc? Lets be honest here -- busybox is an easy target for configuring
things out of, but it _used_ to work on powerpc. I think other things have
gotten bigger and thats not my fault

It would _really_ help if we knew exactly how much space you _need_ to make the
powerpc floppies go. Does 12k really make the difference? Isn't there
anywhere else we can get that space from? For example, we already know we can
save at least 88k by switching from the dhcp-client to udhcp. I'm certain
there are also other places where space can be saved. Has anyone spent any
time trying to shrink yaboot? Do you really need so many fdisks? Can things
be shrunk in powerpc-utils?

Bug#99934: [fw: Re: is this bug fixed?]

2001-09-24 Thread David Kimdon

Okay, looks like if we test putting the root filesystem on an extended
partition and then we try to make a boot-floppy we should be able to
tell if this bug is fixed or not, yes?

I got my potato version working, however it sure was a headache. My main problem was
that I was trying to put my root Debian on an extended partition. It kept failing at
"Making the boot disk". Once I changed my plan to putting the root partition on a
primary partition, I didn't have that problem. I know about the lilo and 1024
cylinder limit but I have never had problems with that before. Anyways, I don't have
an extra system to try it again on. Sorry. I have really appreciated Debian system
after install, although I don't use it a lot right now. And Debian's documentation,
bug-tracking, and mailing-list methods have made me a big fan.
Thanks for checking up. Anymore questions regarding this bug?
Brian

Upstream tells me that it is known to work with the ISC DHCP
server, as well as the uDHCP server. They don't know of any
problems with other servers.

Sorry, I didn't mean that it was available in testing. It's only
in sid at the moment (though hopefully this should change soon).

It's not ready for inclusion yet. udhcpc support needs to be
added to ifupdown as well as the boot-floppies.

Note that these disks are still being developed (but are fairly stable).
If you are looking to help test that is greatly appreciated:

http://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/woody/main/disks-${arch}/

I just built and uploaded it for i386.

I've packaged and uploaded this. It doesn't appear on the package
page, however, since the i386 build daemon hasn't built it yet.
There are packages available for alpha, arm, hppa, ia64, m68k,
mips, mipsel, powerpc, s390, sh and sparc.

If you need some more space for the boot floppies (as seems to be the case)
then udhcp would be a good choice
http://opensource.lineo.com/udhcp/
since the client is about 17k. By way of comparison, pump is 52k and
dhcp-client is 105k (not counting scripts and suchs). So this could save us
88k over dhcp-client... If we are worrying about little 30k differences with
busybox, I think making the switch over the udhcp makes a trmendous amount of
sense,
