Move fstab configuration?

2001-11-04 Thread Chris Tillman

I used the installer system, after installation was complete, to move some
partitions around and re-set the boot configuration.

The /etc/fstab was incorrect after I did that (duh). Would it make
sense to move the automatic configuration of that file into the Make Hard
Disk Bootable step? In my case, since I was changing the partition
numbering, I expected that step to do whatever was necessary to make the
system bootable.

well, i used the woody boot diskettes. the standard flavor and the safe

debootstrap-udeb - should I make it ?

Since it would help clean up my build process for my initrd based
on debian-installer, shall I post patches here to add a -udeb section

Would they be welcomed ?
Seems all that needs to be done is to not run dh_installdocs and

Re: LVM enabled boot disks ?

2001-11-04 Thread Mark van Walraven

Hi Erik,

I'm still preparing some documentation, but here's the rough procedure.
I'm sending a copy to debian-boot in case this is useful to anyone else.

Check the boot-floppies software out of the Debian CVS archive. See
http://cvs.debian.org/boot-floppies/README-CVS?rev=1.9content-type=text/vnd.viewcvs-markupcvsroot=debian-boot
for details on how to do this.

The version I checked out was the same as, or close to, what ended up being
release 3.0.16 of the boot-floppies package.

http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2001/debian-boot-200110/msg00987.html
details some modifications to the boot-floppies source so that dbootstrap
will wait until installing the kernel before copying the network settings
onto the target root filesystem and creating the dbootstrap_settings
file. This is important if the root filesystem is to be mounted outside
dbootstrap.

Make an LVM-patched 2.4.10-ac11 (a later kernel might be better by now)
kernel-image Debian package with the 'kernel-package' package.

In boot-floppies/config, set the variable 'kver' to 2.4.10-ac11, or
whatever you named your kernel.

Copy the kernel-image package (that you just built) and the lvm10 package
(from the Debian unstable archive) into sub-directory 'local' of the
directory used for 'ftp_archive' in the file boot-floppies/config.

Add lvm10 to boot-floppies/scripts/rootdisk/EXTRACT_LIST_i386.
Add lib/lvm-10/vgscan, lib/lvm-10/vgchange and lib/lvm-10/lvscan
to boot-floppies/scripts/rootdisk/SMALL_BASE_LIST_i386.

The boot-floppies were otherwise built as normal - see the README files
in the source for details on how to do this. I think I skipped the
1.2MB floppy images, since the root floppy got too big with the LVM tools.

Boot and go through the installer until you have created your partitions,
then choose Execute a Shell. The LVM tools will be in /lib/lvm-10; run
vgscan then pvcreate, lvcreate, etc.

Make filesystems on your LVs as required, then mount them in your desired
structure below /target. For example:

mount /dev/vg0/lv0 /target
mkdir /target/tmp /target/usr /target/var /target/home
chmod 1777 /target/tmp
mount /dev/vg0/lv1 /target/tmp
mount /dev/vg0/lv2 /target/usr
mount /dev/vg0/lv3 /target/var
mkdir /target/var/log /target/var/lib
mount /dev/vg0/lv5 /target/var/log
mount /dev/vg0/lv6 /target/var/lib
mount /dev/vg0/lv7 /target/home

Exit the shell to return to the installer and continue from Install
Kernel and Driver Modules. The rest of the install should proceed
normally, but if /boot is on a LVM logical volume, you won't be able
to use Make System Bootable without a patched LILO, an initrd and
some adjustment to /target/etc/lilo.conf. (In you do this, I recommend
making a boot floppy, as initrd's are easy to get wrong and it's much
easier to fix an initrd on a floppy and transfer it to the hard disk
once it's working.)

Hope this is what you wanted. There may be errors, as I haven't yet
done a clean run though to test the procedure. If you find any errors
or omissions, please let me know.

Regards,

Mark.

LVM-Bootdisk

2001-11-04 Thread Erik Tews

Hi

I am currently a little bit experimentating with installing debian
directly into lvm. Theory is not so difficult, and it works with a lot
of handwork during the installation-process. One of the main problems is
that the lvm-binarys are so big. So they cannot be on the bootdisk. But
getting them from a mounted cdrom or floppy works.

But for beeing able to install a system into lvm, I need a kernel with
LVM-support. So I need some documentation how I can build a bootdisk
with a customized kernel. I now got the kernel in /usr/src/linux and
making a kernel-image with make-kpkg works. Where can I now find the
steps which are needed to create a set of boot-floppies for this kernel?

I made some private modifications to dbootstrap, adding a 'manual' option
to the 'select partition' menus for Initialize a Linux Partition and
Mount a Previously-Initialized Partition. These allow the user to
type in the path to the block device to be initialised/mounted when the
device is not known by dbootstrap, as in the case of LVM logical volumes
and MD devices.

I was going to abandon them (because I didn't think they would be
accepted into the Woody boot-floppies), but will share them if anyone
is interested.

i don't think its appropriate for Make System Bootable to be messing
with /etc/fstab, not all users will want to use Make System Bootable
(particularly on x86 systems) and many architectures don't support
that step at all.

on older boot-floppies you might be able to get away with rerunning
`configure the base system' which is where this step is currently
located, but current boot-floppies don't allow you to rerun that step,
its automatically run after base install (since its non-interactive
now).

if your messing with partition ordering you need to edit /etc/fstab
yourself, or better do it before you install.

Bug#118276: boot-floppies: Changes involving quik in woody b-f should be backported to potato

2001-11-04 Thread Chris Tillman

Package: boot-floppies
Version: 2.2.23
Severity: important

I had occasion to install using the potato 2.2.23 version of boot-floppies
on an oldworld. The quik 'Make Hard Disk Bootable' in that version is
unusable. I ended up booting the 3.0.16 installer just to use its make Hard
Disk Bootable menu item, and it worked fine.

So if it hasn't already been done, I think that item should be backported.
It makes the difference between a successful oldworld install and a
disappointing failure.

Re: [debian-user] I'm coming on board

2001-11-04 Thread lloyder

Mark et all,

You have it right. Exactly right!

If the installer is currently in a similar state, the
kernel modules stuff should be taken out of the installer, net cards should be handled
well, kernel
modules stuff should be well documented,
and people should be educated on the 'lsmod' and
'modconf' commands.

Screw fair, we want to rule! If the guy in the red had does
something that makes sense, then we better, just do it the
debian way.

 One would hope.

 On the other hand...

I'm apparently one of the few people who have had no problems installing
Debian. I mean, sure, the installer doesn't do much, but then again, I
don't expect it to, 'cause it's just an installer.

I figured everybody just did a minimal install and then apt-get'ed
 everything on demand.

I think the trick is (which was mentioned in that article, somewhat): do
an install, but don't select any tasks, or any additional packages, and
certainly don't bother with the kernel modules stuff, except for your
net driver. Let all of that get setup, and then go and install the rest
of the stuff that you need.

It also seemed like that article was sort of being (a little) unfair,
since he was trying to use a network card that wasn't supported by the
CD's he had, and he didn't have a floppy to use to copy the driver over.

Stale Documentation: ethernet cards

2001-11-04 Thread lloyder

SUMMARY:
* getting Debian setup is very likely to be very
dependent on manually getting the ethernet card(s)
online
* Linux Ethernet-Howto is very stale!
** many other Howto's are also very stale!

I am trying to shed the shackles of M$, but documentation
has weighed upon me like a mountain. What has lead
to the staleness? Is Bill's minions at work...
I think not.

This weekend I have spent much energy trying to
get Debian Potato installed and that computer
back on the internet. Long before I get to the very
challenging part of getting it securely
on the internet, I have been slowed to a crawl.

PROBLEM: getting ethernet working on Debian Potato

I have been RTFMing to exhaustion.

My references include:
* http://www.debian.org
* http://www.linuxdoc.org
* Cable Modem Providers HOWTO
* Linux Ethernet-Howto
* Learning Debian GNU/Linux
* Running Linux 3rd Ed.
* Debian Tutorial
* http://sourceforge.net/projects/newbiedoc/
+ a pile of debian-user posts, including a few very similar threads over the last few
+days.
+ a slew of other installation accounts from websites

It is absolutely amazing how well so many resources
can dance around a detailed, relevant explaination.
I am particularly disappointed in the Debian Install
Manual -- as this is by the team that I want to
play for!

It is mindblowing that the most recent version of the
Linux Ethernet - Howto is dated Oct 29, 2000 , and
does not identify a huge array of ethernet cards
(and possibly chipsets). I am not suggesting that
this is Paul's fault. Have people been submitting updates?

Over a year later this almost exactly describes my experience:
http://dewbie.editthispage.com/stories/storyReader$21
http://dewbie.editthispage.com/stories/storyReader$22

Only I did not have a kewl weblog (very cool indeed),
and I tend to RTFM... so my ending was not so (rapidly)
happy :-(

At debian-user, over this first weekend that I have subscribed,
this issue has come up in various forms at least a dozen. Everytime, the community
immediately
identifies the exact issue for a particulary
ethernet card.

What exactly is your problem? You likely ask, I am
very close to semi-enlightenment now. I will try my
own hand before I bring it completely to you all.
I feel the information presented above is a far more
important issue.

More emails to follow (not likely tonight),
