Bad install with SCSI (sym53c8xx - no hard drive found)
Hi, Apologies if this is not appropriate for this list (mailing here is suggested in the installation manual, but I may be doing something stupid, rather than being the vicitim of a bug - I tried debian-user and got the comment that the installer may not be loading the correct module - but how do I change that?) When I boot from CD (2.2r0) to install I am told (after configuring the keyboard) that no hard drives are present. This is not true - the machine has two SCSI disks hanging off a Symbios controller (sym53c8xx - 53c1010 ultra3). The machine came with Red Hat pre-installed (and it works!), so this hardware is supported by Gnu/Linux. How do I install Debian? Is this a bug? Is it fixed in some later release? I can still boot to Red Hat and have cable modem cnxn and CD writer, so could burn more up-to-date CDs if necessary (for example). Or can I install from Red Hat itself? Looking in various FAQs, nothing mentions Symbios, but another make with suspiciously smilar numbers (can't find the reference now) was supported with no boot paramateres. This is what is printed to the console: [...] scsi: fdomain Detection failed (no card) NCR53c406a: no available ports found sym53c416.c: Version 1.0.0 Failed initialization of WD-7000 SCSI card! [...] Note that I have a sym53c8xx, not a sym53c416 as appears above (unless they're the same). Any suggestions/help appreciated. As I said earlier, the machine boots RH OK with the same bios settings (not trying to push RH down your throat, it's just evidence that the BIOS might be OK :-) Thanks for you help (and sorry for not reading the help on that initial screen - I know how annoying it is when users miss the obvious feature put there to help them...). Petter Reinholdtsen: I assume you want to use ISO-8859-1. So do we in the Skolelinux project. Please let me know if you find out how to do this. The problem is that these texts are displayed by the bootloader, and I doubt that it can be written to have enough intelligence to load another screen font. So I think you might be stuck with codepage 437 :-/ That reminds me, I haven't tested what the Swedish texts look like (but they should work when converted to 437, since Swedish is covered there). If you can't get iso-8859-1 on there, perhaps as a last resort you should consider using Swedish Ö/ö instead of the Norwegian/Danish Ø/ø? I was thinking it should be generated (and not by default) by building debootstrap a special way, with ByHand entries and a changelog and all that. I talked to AJ about that, he provisionally ok'd but he should get approval or at least asked about any such changes (being also an archive maintainer). Right. I expect to make a maintainer upload of debootstrap sometime this week which'll do that. At that point, we/I'll just build basedebs tarballs on auric regularly. I belive you want to split it into 1.44M disk images as well. How do you want this done? Just split, so they can be catted back together to make the original file, or something more complicated (so you can verify the disks are put in in the right order)? Does anyone care about 1.2MB disk images, or anything else? Do we want this done for all architectures, or are disk images unnecessary for some (s390, maybe)? I guess something like: dists/woody/main/ disks-i386/ current/ base-images/ basedebs-3.0.tar.gz basedebs-3.0-1440.001 .. basedebs-3.0-1440.0xx is a reasonable way to lay it out. Is it reasonable to expect that people will be able to handle the long filenames and the multiple .'s? It kind of sucks to add a large tarball to the mirrors of what is essentially just the .debs they are already mirroring, plus a little extra data, but I don't see a way around it. Well, it's not *that* large. Well, just for the benefit of the CD folks, if they are planning to provide the disk images on the CD. Doing that was the consensus we arrived at -- e.g., for someone who has a CD and floppy at one computer but only a floppy and no network at another. Or for someone with a network connection and a floppy at one end, but no network at the other. Bug#120480: boot-floppies: pcmcia removal problems
Package: boot-floppies Version: 3.0.17 (udma100-ext3) While installing the udma100-ext3 flavour of 3.0.17 boot-floppies on a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4300, I ran into some problems with the PCMCIA support. I configured PCMCIA support which worked fine (correct modules loaded etc.), I then went to configure the network which also went okay until at the end when it tried to reload the pcmcia modules. This failed. In the syslog, I got (rough transcription): | dbootstrap: ds: device or resource busy | dbootstrap: i82365: device or resource busy | dbootstrap: pcmcia_coure: device or resource busy | insmod: insmod: a module named pcmcia_core already exists | user.err dbootstrap: an error encountered while trying to load and configure the |pcmcia modules cat /proc/modules showed (again, rough transaction): | serial_cs 0 (unused) | 3c574_cs 0 (unused) | ds 0 [serial_cs 3c574_cs] | i82365 22704 2 | pcmcica_core 0 [serial_cs 3c574_cs ds i82365] I removed the modules byhand in the correct order and reran the 'configure pcmcia support' step which got me working networking. This is reproduceable (this is my second install since I didn't take notes first time round), and if you need more info, I can probably reinstall again to get more details if you tell me what you need. -- James -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
