same error.

i even tried the root.bin version. i verified that /etc/messages.trm
exists.

(note: after you gunzip the image, and mount it, make sure you mount
proc also. esp. if you are on serial console / ssh. otherwise i am
assuming that all display is sent to the first VC. i ended up having to
kill the linuxrc process, which rebooted the whole system. whups!)

any idea where to start looking for the problem? i'm not very i18n
aware.

Evil, I agree. The priority for nvi is set to 110, while the priority
for nano is 40. I wrote a bug on this and the nvi maintainer agreed
its priority was too high; he's resetting it to 21 IIRC, which will
leave nano as top in a virgin system.

there is an etc/messages.trm. i did do a make clean before building.

this was the reiserfs flavour, over serial.

i am rebuilding, after a make distclean (not sure what that is going to
buy me, other than a lot more network usage, as .deb's get downloaded)

If you haven't done "make clean" recently, try that and then rebuild.
Otherwise,
you may need to do a bit of debugging. What .trm files do you have on the root

Sure enough, pcmcia.c had:

/* FIXME: must remove serial_cs and
   other modules which ds uses,
   otherwise this will fail */
execlog ("/sbin/rmmod ds", LOG_INFO);

I've checked in something that I hope will make it work, but I don't have any
pcmcia equipment here to test with. Can you try it again when b-f 3.0.18 is
out and report back whether it makes a difference?

What do you mean by an "endless loop" - what exactly do you see on the screen?

This probably means you didn't clean the tree fully after your previous build.
Turning LANGUAGE_CHOOSER on or off is pretty intrusive: it's very important
that no generated files are left lying around otherwise you can end up with
a broken mixture of i18n and non-i18n stuff.

Try making "clean" and rebuilding. If the problem persists, send mail here
again.

I got that problem too, and was wondering which package had the errors.

I noticed that man-db was seg-faulting in cron.weekly/man-db, so I
reinstalled it (haven't tried it since). So maybe the problem was
man-db?

I noticed when I did re-install it, I was asked questions that I had

Hmmm... need to try it again now I have reinstalled it and see if it
still crashes.

Checkout instructions:

Build instructions are in the "README" file.

Yes.

None that I know of; however I believe it's just a matter of making a
kernel-image .deb and dropping it in /archive/debian/incoming, and
frobbing the "config" file in the toplevel before building.

Make sure that libnewt-utf8-pic is installed, and libnewt-pic is not. Having

Hmmm, libnewt-dev installs a /usr/lib/libnewt.so symlink hardwired
to libnewt.so.0.50.17

Not good. I'll try to rebuild now.

Yes, but that doesn't mean it can't be fixed. We have only just enabled
LC by default, it's bound to take a little while for things to settle
down.

Of course an updated CVS snapshot, few days ago. The flavor
(udma100-ext3) does not have framebuffer. And it probably won't,
because of limited kernel size.

As said, the dialog boxes are broken, parts of the lines disappear when
non-ASCII characters are there. This is critical, IMHO.

Visit cvs.debian.org and read instructions in

checkout it

Yes. You can make your own kernel-image packages, give them a higher
version and put it to the additional local packages. See config file.

Since the kernel has to meet some requirements, you better take the
config files of the existing kernel-image packages used by BFs and
modify them a bit.

We have support for this things. Please note that if you are going to
use a 2.4.x kernel, you cannot take the config from official kernel
images since the use another boot scheme (via initrd). Instead, you
would have to make a essentials-built-in configuration. Somewhere in my
people.debian.org/~blade directory is a config file which I used
succefully to build BFs with 2.4.9 (some months ago).

Right, yeah. I just meant "does dbootstrap start with the other flavours", but
from what John Robinson says the answer is no.

>Are there instructions to set up a chroot environment to test the install

It's pretty simple. Just gunzip one of the root images, mount it with loopback,
and chroot into that place.

I ran up dbootstrap under catchsegv and it seems to be crashing inside malloc
somewhere. I have a vague feeling that last time this happened to me it was
because I had some kind of UTF8/non-UTF8 library mixup leading to heap
corruption. Can you check that you don't have any trace of non-UTF8 libslang,
libnewt or anything like that on your system?

Is not there any way to work around without using this UTF8 console
stuff? Sorry, I did not work on BFs for some time, now I tried the
current snaphost and was scared! The boxes have no borders, when using
de language, the rest of lines is cut away when a non-ASCII character
appears. Looks ugly. Who implemented this? Porridge? IMHO the stuff is
nothing but unstable, and not suitable for Woody. If I were you, I would
invest the manpower into better configuration methods (i.e. Lilo setup
which is hated by newbies) instead of trying to mary dbootstrap with
more i18n than we allready had.

What kind of problems? Framebuffer support is needed for the i18n'd
boot-floppies; it's not there just for the penguin. Not all the flavours
have this enabled, though, so there should be another kernel to fall
back on in case of trouble.

Yes, there should be md5sums for each package in the Packages
file. I think debootstrap checks them, though, so it probably is
the BusyBox problem. Erik said he plans on uploading a fixed
version.

Module lp kapout à l'install...

2001-11-30 Thread philippe.mechelaere

Bonjour,

I tested the latest boot disks

2001-11-30 Thread A Mennucc1

hi

preface: I am a debian developer; I was needing an extra X box
(=small PC running X for connecting to another host),
and I had an old pentium with a 200Mb hard disk spare

 I have a small testing mirror here;
so I downloaded the latest boot disks for woody,
and tried to install using just the rescue and root disk, and my mirror

...and here is the captain's log ...

 SHORT VERSION

--boot disks

yes: it really does install from the network using just two floppies;
but, the mirror must contain a Release file, and my mirror does not
(this is bug #100623 for apt-move) so I have used an official mirror.

BTW I have created a CD using debian-cd and the CD does not contain
the file Release either... I wonder if I could use it to install
a Debian system from scratch!

then I reboot into my new system and go on with:

--base config

when I chose 'edit the sources list'...
(I wanted to add my personal small debian mirror)
I found myself in 'vi' . THIS IS EVIL. why cant I use 'nano'?
So here is a nice suggestion: first time the user needs to edit something,
the menu configuration should ask
'what do you want to use as a simple editor for text files?
 vi (for long time hackers)?
 nano(for normal people)?'
and then remember the answer (maybe setting a dpkg-alternative)

I also found I could not install kernel-image-2.4.14-586 since it needs
initrd which needs cpio which conflicts (?!?!) with tar

I am now writing this e-mail using my new X box;
there is another small glitch:
for some strange reason, the backspace key is acting as a delete
key; but I hope I will fix it soon

LONG VERSION

- me and dbootstrap, that is, me using the boot disks

I write the rescue and root disks from images-1.44/compact,
and I test them with 'dd if=/dev/fd0 | cmp - file'

I succesfully boot the kernel (the penguin logo is cool but
I would suggest not to use it: the vga framebuffer mode has problems
 on some PCs!)

I cannot load the root disk: I reformat it and rewrite it
(I hate floppies); I think that 'floppy disks are not reliable' should
be written in size 48 in the documentation.

I reboot the recue disk

this time the root disk is ok

I initialize the swap on /dev/hda1 and the root on /dev/hda2

I initialize the network using dhcp, and it works (COOOL!)

I load the drivers.tgz file using 'network' and my http mirror (CL!)

dbootstrap suggests that I should maybe configure my drivers.
For me this is, was, and ever will be a pain in the a**
of the Debian installing. I never truly understood what I should do
at this point. I know that my ethernet card is a "3Com 3c590"
and the compact linux kernel has autodetected it...
so, do I need to do anything? will it be autodetected again at reboot?
heaven knows. I step forward

I install the base system:
 I choose 'network':
I see a message asking to testers to install 'testing':
the next screen asks for the release to install
(actually this other screen suggests to use 'stable' but then stable is not
even in the list :-) so) I indeed choose 'testing'
I enter the right URL to my mirror

my mirror does not contain the 'Release' file;
this is bug #100623 for apt-move; so I try to download it;
but no it does not work this way, the 'Release' file contains md5sums
of the Packages files. So I point dbootstrap to an official mirror

the base package is correctly installed, so I install lilo and reboot

--- me and the base configuration

ok the base configuration is a breeze: local time, shadow passwords,
I know all of them

then it asks me the Debian mirror to use: I choose the nearest
one by using the menus (COOL!)

then I want to add my personal small debian mirror,
(for speed sake: it sits right here) so I choose 'edit the sources list'...
and I find myself in 'vi' . THIS IS EVIL. I hate vi and have big problems
using it. Why is vi the default at this step? why cant I use 'nano' or
 'aee'?
So here is a nice suggestion: first time the user needs to edit something,
the menu configuration should ask
'what do you want to use as a simple editor for text files?
 vi (for long time hackers)?
 nano(for normal people)?'
and then remember the answer (maybe setting a dpkg-alternative)

then I run tasksel but there is no task for 'very simple X server'
so I run dselect; for some reasons, the default is to install
also the whole gcc and gcc3-0 family, so I tell to dinstall
'forget it' (yes, I do talk to programs sometime)

I install a few programs; I wonder if gpm may have a better
interface for configuring it (it is not very user friendly):
maybe using mdetect?

I find I cannot install kernel-image-2.4.14-586 since it needs
initrd which needs cpio which conflicts (?!?!) with tar

I install the xserver-xfree86 but it does not support my S3 card

I install xserver-s3 (thanks B.R. for having that in testing)

some usual problems with resolutions and mouse

I am now writing this e-mail using my new X box;
for some strange reason, the backspace key is acting as

Flashing screen with cvs bootdisks

2001-11-30 Thread Nils Rennebarth

I build i386 bootdisks from current cvs and tried the idepci floppies
for an install. After booting and inserting the root floppy I get a blue
screen then its cleared to black again then blue ...

Switching to another console doesn't help, same effect there. Switching to
console 3 for error messages doesn't help eiter, as these are immediately
ovewritten by the blue.

Any suggestions how to debug this? It appears that dbootstrap immediately
dies and is restarted by init but I can't even see if there are meaningful
error messages there.

Well, I don't actually know on which package the error ocurred. So, I
cannot try GNU gzip; how can I verify all the packages downloaded. with

Sparc installation packages corrupted

2001-11-30 Thread Carlos Betancourt

First: is this the place to report issues regarding the installation
boot floppies and system?
In case it is, my installation was unsuccessfull due to a
"zcat: invalid compressed data--crc error"
"zcat: invalid compressed data--length error"

I was using sun4cdm floppies on a sparcstation IPC.

It seems that one of the packages downloaded is corrupt, so I would like
to verify the integrity of all the downloaded packages. How can I
verify?
I remember in rpm packates it somethinkg like "rpm --verify --nogpg
*.rpm". How can I do it with dpkg? (I read the man page but I couldn't
find the way. Maybe I didn't read thoroughly. Sorry for the question)

Thanks in advance for your help.

Endless loop

2001-11-30 Thread Attila Nagy

Hello,

I've built a new set of boot floppies yesterday and got an endless loop
after the blue screen has arrived. This is when I set USE_LANGUAGE_CHOOSER
:=false in config. I can't do nothing. I can switch to the second console,
but it immediately gives me that nice empty blue screen :)

When I enable the LANGUAGE_CHOOSER it goes to the following lines of
utilities/dbootstrap/main.c:

[...]
problemBoxEn ("An error occured while loading application messages.",
"Problem");

reboot (RB_AUTOBOOT);
[...]

And of course this isn't an effective method of installing Debian from
the floppies.

This is what I did:
$ cvs checkout boot-floppies
$ make release
install it into a directory.
make a CD with it.
boot, and got the above...

What am I doing wrong (again:) ?

Thanks,

HTTP installation: default download URL wrong [for IPC Sparc]

2001-11-30 Thread Carlos Betancourt

The default url for http/ftp install is
http://http.us.debian.org/debian/dists/woody/main/disks-sparc/current/d

It should point to
http://http.us.debian.org/debian/dists/woody/main/disks-sparc/current

I forgot to take note of the mantainer (it was written in the first
screen, but I was lazy) so in case he is not in this list, please let me
know where can I send this report. TIA.

Carlos
