Ok, well, during the install it was set to "English (QWERTY/US)" which
is verry broken.

> > Did you install with the boot
> > floppies language chooser? Which language did you select?

> Yes, English

I can't be sure, but I suspect that the language chooser is responsible
for this bogosity of LANGUAGE in /root/debootstrap_settings, and it is being
propigated into base-config's environment. This is borne out by:

./utilities/dbootstrap/langs/english.src:English (QWERTY/US)

I really don't want to turn the PERL_BADLANG hack back on in
base-config. Especially because if I _do_, it will probably just mask
the problem and everyone will get the base-config step in english. Lang
needs to be of the form LL_ll, period.

Can this be fixed in the boot floppies please?

I'm sorry but the engine object comes from a module that is neither
part of Python, nor python-xml so I can't really help with it.

Bug#127583: boot-floppies: Intro screen cut off at bottom

2002-01-02 Thread Chris Tillman

Package: boot-floppies
Version: N/A; reported 2002-01-02
Severity: normal

Installing cvs local build on powerpc with LC, the intro screen
doesn't display the last line or two. It ends with
"... is maintained by". Also the lines appear to be short,
only extending about 2/3 of the way across the box,
except for the one line "This sect ... <...debian.org>". That
line extends to within 1 or 2 characters of the right edge
(about 95 characters). It's as if maybe if they were re-wrapped
the bottom would show.

ermmm.. that makes this code unnecessarily large.

Why is it not enough to specify 'utf-8' in here ?

for lang in what:
if do_convert:
e = engine ('utf-8', lang.charset)

fsck as part of debian-boot.... ;-/

2002-01-02 Thread Jim Westveer

--

One of the great things about the potato CD images, is
that one can put in a potato cd, boot the kernel from the
cd, and then run fsck on a broken hard disk.

But alas, fsck no longer seems to be a part of the boot-disks ;-(

Is it possible to re-instate fsck as part of the base image
before woody is released ?

Ciao,

Package: boot-floppies
Version: 3.0.18-2001-12-21
Severity: normal

At some point during the install, the installation screen decided it would
switch to a black background. This certainly doesn't hurt but it's really
awkward.

Bug#127550: documentation: ppp not available before base is installed

2002-01-02 Thread Tomas Pospisek

Package: boot-floppies
Version: 3.0.18-2001-12-21
Severity: normal

The Installation Manual says in 2.2.0:

> Diskless installation, using network booting from a local area network and
>NFS-mounting of all local filesystems, is another option — you'll probably need at
>least 16MB of RAM for a diskless installation. After the operating system kernel is
>installed, you can install the rest of your system via any sort of network connection
>(including PPP), via FTP, HTTP, or NFS.

This is not exactly right - the PPP install method isn't available untill one
has installed the kernel *and* the base system. So I propose:

(including PPP after installation of the base system)

Bug#127546: boot-floppies: please, please, please include a pointer to basedebs/disks somewhere

2002-01-02 Thread Tomas Pospisek

Package: boot-floppies
Version: 3.0.18-2001-12-21
Severity: normal

AFAIK there is nowhere a mention where one can find the basedebs.tgz or
the base-disks. Please, please, please spare the volounteers that go and
try to install testing what in heaven could have gone wrong, where possibly
one could find the base-stuff and then installing some possibly stale old
basedebs.tgz that s/he found on some obscure internet site and that possibly
will break together with the newer install disks.

Mind you there is *nowhere* AFAIS a mention of any base-stuff at all allthough
it is required depending on how you install the system.

*t

PS: I'm taging this as a "normal" bug since this effectively breaks the install
i.e. the user is left at a point at a place where he has no internet access
with a half installed system where he's spend a few hours allready to
install it.

Bug#127537: boot-floppies: please do better error reporting

2002-01-02 Thread Tomas Pospisek

Package: boot-floppies
Version: 3.0.18-2001-12-21
Severity: wishlist

When something goes wrong I would suggest a better strategy:

apart from the popup that tells the user *that* something goes wrong:

1) give him the exact error message (at least advanced users will know what to
   do from it)
2) give him a "help" choice, where he'll be presented a simple error finding
   strategy:
"There's been an error. You can try to find out what went wrong by:
1) changing to the error log - please press ALT-F3 to see it. You can
move back from there by pressing ALT-F1.
2) changing to the terminal (ALT-F2), pressing "ENTER" and entering the
command "dmesg" and examine the output.
3) if something is wrong with our installer, then *please* note down
the bits that went wrong and send us a bugreport"
3) give the user the oportunity to report that bug - I guess the "Report Bug"
feature is meant to provide this feature (and I hope it will be able to:
   1) call an editor so one is able to write a "propper report",
   2) save everything to disk and
   3) once the system is installed/has an internet connection - send the
  report off to the bts

Bug#127535: boot-floppies: writing bug report on a read only partition

2002-01-02 Thread Tomas Pospisek

Package: boot-floppies
Version: 3.0.18-2001-12-21
Severity: normal

at some point when reading disks images from a partition, that partition
got mounted read only. The result was that when I was trying to "report an
error" the system said:

"An error occured while generating the problem report, sorry".

I looked at the error log (tty3) and saw that the fs was mounted read only.

Bug#127531: boot-floppies: CTRL-C should not cancel the whole install process

2002-01-02 Thread Tomas Pospisek

Package: boot-floppies
Version: 3.0.18-2001-12-21
Severity: minor

While installing I chose "Get network address from DHCP/Bootp server" or
similar. My understanding of that was, that I am configuring the eth0 for
DHCP (client). Which will be the case once the box will be running, but is
not the case at the time of the installation. OK, that's my missunderstanding.
It might be that the question could be worded more clearly. But now, after
pressing OK I have to wait for ??? minutes before the DHCP client comes back?
Um, I'll just press CTRL-C and ...

the installation process is aborted.

Bug#127529: boot-floppies: wrong text in modules configuration?

2002-01-02 Thread Tomas Pospisek

Package: boot-floppies

The description in the modules configuration says:

"...You can read a page about the purpose of any module and then you can enable

Only that there is no page with a description of a module or if there is it's
unknown how to get to it from the description. Pressing enter just asks you

In the modules selection there is one section that says:

"cdrom - Device drivers for CD-ROM drives"

That's missleading, these are just drivers for non-(standard) IDE/ATAPI drives!

Device drivers for non-standard/non-ATAPI CD-ROM drives

Bug#127521: boot-floppies: problems reading partition table or something?

2002-01-02 Thread Tomas Pospisek

Package: boot-floppies
Version: 3.0.18-2001-12-21
Severity: important

The install process seems to be having some major problems with finding
out which partitions are currently mounted or not.

During the install I've been changing frequently between read (install disks
etc.) from harddisk or from mounted partition. I have not found out but
sometimes the install wouldn't show me some partitions on my disk that I did
not touch at all, sometimes it wouldn't show me partitions that I had mounted
and unmounted just before etc.

Weird,

1. Modify syslinux.cfg on the rescue disk so that it loads initrd by default,
e.g., change noinitrd on the append line to inird=initrd.img
2. Turn the root disk into an MSDOS fs by removing the padding so that it
fits, and make sure that the file is called initrd.img.

Clarification of release notes issues

2002-01-02 Thread Rob Bradford

Heh. What a mess. It seemed 3 days before I commited to cvs using the
woody tag, which it was suggested for me to do, by someone who shall
remain nameless, toff commited my work to cvs under the head branch.

So, having read the threads the correct solution IMHO is to merge the
two branches which differ little and just work on the head one.

Thanks to Othmar Pasteka for pointing this out. However i wish this
could have been resolved sooner.

Which reminds me, really should this discussion take place on -doc
rather than here :) Which i was subscribed too.

Happy new year..

I'd suggest rebuilding bf and see if it consistently creates crap.

OK, I get the same.

Same.

Hehehe. Got you ;-)

> So /sbin/mac-fdisk is hosed for some reason, but /sbin/fdisk seems to be
> a working mac-fdisk.

Nope:

[root@piglet /mnt/jaz]# file sbin/fdisk
sbin/fdisk: Bourne shell script text

Ah? Hmm, let's see:

[root@piglet /mnt/jaz]# cat sbin/fdisk
#!/bin/sh
#
# fdisk, a wrapper to use the right fdisk on Linux/PowerPC
[snip]
case "$Arch" in
[snip]
Power*|iMac*|[Pp]ower[bB]ook*)
# if Power Macintosh
/sbin/mac-fdisk $@
exit 0
;;

Thank you for showing us you have a working /sbin/mac-fdisk :-)) Which
also explains why the step 'partioning hd' in debootstrap brings me back
to debootstrap immediately: exit 0!

No, indeed bf only contains mac-fdisk as partitioning tool on Powermac.
And the one in bf-3.0.18-20011221 _is_ hosed.

I re-copied a working one, and now file says this:

[root@piglet /mnt/jaz]# file sbin/mac-fdisk
sbin/mac-fdisk: ELF 32-bit MSB executable, PowerPC or cisco 4500, version 1,
dynamically linked (uses shared libs), stripped

Ah, better. Let's try again ;-)

Cheers

Michel

Hm, which means there's no 'real' fdisk? Which means no way to do DOS
partitions? Not sure this really is a problem, but user preferences may
be strange

A DOS fdisk may be a good candidate (together with LVM tools and
plentyof other things left out for space constraints) for a bigger
ramdisk that doesn't need to fit on a floppy or for an additional
ramdisk that can be add-loaded later.

What package version did you use from woody? ldd on your binary gives 'not
a dynamic executable'. objdump needs the -m flag to do anything with the
file (so the ELF header doesn't contain the requried info anymore).
Even then, the relocation info is totally hosed (that might be a side
effect of the broken ELF header) and I can't really make out where the
text section is supposed to start. Whatever magic you did instead of
copying the file to the target directory - it backfired.

look in /usr/src/source*2.2.19/arch/i386/boot/ for your new kernel.

The task files are not meant to be automatically created. We should
do that for the file listing the packages required by debootstrap
but even automating it is not enough. The system on which you run
debian-cd may not have the latest debootstrap that will be included.

So from time to time we have to update the tasks/base-woody file.
And we update it with the script included in the comment of the top
of the file :
for arch in alpha arm i386 ia64 m68k powerpc sparc mips mipsel hppa s390
do
echo "#ifdef ARCH_$arch"
debootstrap --arch $arch --print-debs $CODENAME | tr ' ' '\n'

Re: problems making own boot-floppies for MegaRAID

2002-01-02 Thread Rory Campbell-Lange

I'm having a couple of problems making my custom kernel and putting this
on a rescue floppy.

1) If I use the compact configure file (I load it using make menuconfig,
then go 'make dep' 'make clean' 'make bzImage') I get a 1.9M kernel. I
must be doing something wrong.

2) I managed to make a 1.2M kernel which fitted on the floppy disk.
However the syslinux loader reports a 'corrupt kernel'. I noticed that
when I tried to cp /usr/src/source*2.2.19/vmlinux to /mnt/linux the
machine wouldn't let me - I had to rm /mnt/linux and then copy */vmlinux
to /mnt/linux.

Thanks for any further help.

I didn't understand Junichi's message as this is what is already done
for debian-cd (although we must manually update a task file to make it
true).

Junichi, what were you trying to do ?

The first CD does always have :
- what debootstrap needs
- a debian standard system (all packages of priority >= standard)
- the packages that are in section "base"
