I agree, and more robust ppp handling has been on base-config's TODO
list for a while already. Unfortunatly it is probably too late to fix
this for woody.

Assuming lang->locale has the right value, that would be fine. The
current base-config will handle this just fine, which is great, since
base-config is supposed to be frozen now.

Bug#127678: boot-floppies: unable to detect when ppp-connection went down

2002-01-03 Thread Tomas Pospisek

Package: boot-floppies
Version: 3.0.18-2001-12-21
Severity: normal

after having the base system installed and rebooted the system will continue with
installing the
"rest" of debian. I did this through a ppp-style install. Unfortunately the system was
unable to
detect that a ppp connection went down. I had to restart it manually through "pon". If
this
happens to a newby s/he will sweat blood to find out a) what went wrong and b) how to
get the
ppp connection back on. So I suggest either to give the system a means to find out
whether the
line's still up or to give the user a possibility to redial.

I'm tagging this report as normal not as wishlist, since I think that the install
process should
be as bullet proof as possible and since I think that connection loss while in ppp is
not such an
uncommon thing.

Bug#127677: boot-floppies: problems with reinstalling base-system

2002-01-03 Thread Tomas Pospisek

Package: boot-floppies
Version: 3.0.18-2001-12-21
Severity: minor

while trying to somehow find a basedebs.tgz I erroneously installed a powerpc
basedebs.tgz on
a i386 machine. Once I understood what went wrong I (after 4h of searching!) found a
i386
basedebs.tgz and installed it. But somehow the install system was not able to replace
the
old/wrong installed basesystem with the new/correct one. It would keep the old one in
place. So I
had to manually "rm -R" everything away, otherwise the new basedebs.tgz would not be
installed.

Woody: VP6 and High Point 370 problems

2002-01-03 Thread Colin Bell

Hi,

I'm looking to install Woody on my machine and I have made a few attempts to
install using the udma100+reiserfs images provided in the frozen distro.
For some reason while booting with floppy boot disks built using rawwrite
and the provided images in images-1.44 it freezes after discovering the hard
drives connected to my HP370. It stops right before it would normally ask
for the root disk.
Any ideas what might be wrong?

Here are my systems stats:

Dual PIII 1Ghz
ABIT VP6
1GB of PC133 ram
3 drives on HP370 (1 - Quantum 60GB, 2 - Quantum 12GB, 3 - IBM 40GB)
1 drive on base controller (1 - Pioneer DVD)
Adaptec 2910 Controller card (included with CD Burner)

Any clues where I could go from here would be great.

Thanks,

Colin Bell

/dev/console, /dev/tty (Re: Bug#126370: installer issues on "real" terminals)

2002-01-03 Thread Karl M. Hegbloom

Can someone please clear up what "/dev/console" and "/dev/tty" are?
I think that "/dev/console" is always the foreground virtual console,
and that "/dev/tty" is always the process's controlling terminal. Is
that correct? If that's the case, or if it's something like that,
then these are the device names that need to be used for the
 "base-config", right?

Then the problem may arise where the user will switch virtual
consoles and log in, and the program running on the first VT will
refresh or redraw it's screen, and that output will appear on top of
the user's current VT rather than on the first one.

If you grep the kernel source for that message, you'll find it...
 I've seen the same message while using LVM/XFS. I don't think it's a
fatal error, just a warning. We'd have to ask the kernel experts
 just exactly what it means.

Glenn> I assume its a problem upstream, im using devfs which may
Glenn> be the problem.

I don't think it's devfs or your frame buffer. The reason it works
in your xterm is that the printk messages from the kernel are not
shown in the xterm, but are on the foreground vt when you are at the
console, unless you suppress them. ("setterm -msglevel 1" might do
 it.)

I thought the binaries were stripped before but a look at the makefile
cured me of that :-)

Yep, but since a rebuild fixed it (at least for one person) I'd say we
forget about this :-)

Well, they get stripped first, see scripts/rootdisk/strip-executables.sh.

The kind of ELF damage that we're seeing here is usually a symptom of using
a "strip" that expected to target another architecture, or had some similar
compatibility issue. Kinda weird that only the one file was affected though.

The latest version (-8) is from Dec. 7. I'd better install that from the
archive instead of using the one from my local source.

> > Whatever magic you did instead of
> > copying the file to the target directory - it backfired.

That's odd. I'm quite sure the version from the archive still has all its
bits in the right place. I test those before releasing the packages, as a
rule :-)

So how do the ramdisks get built these days? Just copy the binaries over?

schmitz@michael:/home/project/debian/bf$ ls -l ramdisk/sbin/mac-fdisk
-rwxr-xr-x1 root root21004 Dec 20 22:57
ramdisk/sbin/mac-fdisk
schmitz@michael:/home/project/debian/bf$ ll /sbin/mac-fdisk
-rwxr-xr-x1 root root29404 Dec 7 16:34 /sbin/mac-fdisk

That doesn't compute, literally. 8400 bytes just got lost during b-f
build.

Nope, there's a script picking which you probably want to use. Pointless,
if you ask me since only one gets installed in the ramdisk :-) I'd suggest
to install pmac-fdisk as well which (surprisingly) handles DOS partition
formats (AFAIR the non-Apple PowerPCs used that, and I initally thought
the Apple PowerPCs used it as well, hence the name).
