The only time you wouldn't want to turn LANG_CHOOSER on would be on architectures that don't ever support framebuffer. For ia64 and hppa, there will be frame buffer support in the kernel, but (for hppa, anyway) it might not support the particular h/w. Also the install might be done via serial console. Will lang chooser drop back to something sensible in those cases too? Yup. New basedebs available next pulse
Hi guys, New basedeb sets will be available after the next pulse, and should include pppoeconf, etc. Additionally the 1.44 and 1.2 floppy images for i386 might have some chance of working this time. It'd be nice if someone were to test it. Cheers, aj -- Anthony Towns [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://azure.humbug.org.au/~aj/ We came. We Saw. Which problem? A base system comes out-of-the box without any device files for the input-style drivers. Is this wise, Look, I don't care about the arguments -- that's for the people who're spending their time working on boot-floppies to grok. I just want to know what they actually *are*. In particular, the new MAKEDEV dependency stopped the binary-basedebs target from working on potato systems, which includes ftp-master, which happens to be where I build basedebs tarballs. I happened to be able to work out how to avoid building the devices tarball at all, in this case, avoiding the issue. Well, I'm not sure it makes sense for translators to follow re-filling of text, since word lengths are not consistent. Why not just use 'diff -b'? Or is there something I'm missing? Agreed, it does not make sence at all to obey the original line wraps. Thanks for the tip. I tried inserting the -b option into doc-check but it only helped in the case were the indentation was changed without changing the line wraps. It took away a few lines though, so it actually helped marginally, but not that much. Claus -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? I did try the bootbf2.4.iso created on Feb 16 2002 at http://people.debian.org/~blade/boot-floppies/cd-iso/bootbf2.4.iso The kernel found the cciss device, (determined by cat /proc/partitions)and after manually creating the /dev/cciss/c0d0... files, I was able to fdisk them. I didn't continue with the install because dbootstrap didn't see the available disks. It looks to me like the required patches for makedev and dbootstrap have been put into CVS so if you could whip up another iso with this new stuff, I would be happy to report back with my findings. Maybe we could split it into European and Others (yes, I know that several European languages are spoken all around the world...) I don't know if this is enough as an argument. That's useful information, but it's not totally compelling on its own. You have to convince us that more people will benefit from adding Catalan than would lose out if we remove Polish. If the Polish translation is so outdated as to be useless, that's easy: removing it wouldn't harm anyone, so Catalan must be an advantage. I don't know if that's the case or not. Also, with Hungarian gone, Polish is the only remaining Eastern European language in the list (whereas Catalan would add yet another Western European one, of which we already have several). So from the point of view of geographic balance I would be a bit reluctant to make that particular change. Do you have statistics for the number of Catalan speakers who don't also speak one of the other supported languages? Unexpected console switch of the installation screen
Hi I've encountered some interesting behaviour of the debian installation system during a woody installation on an Amiga4000 APUS box (architecture: powerpc, flavor: apus), using kernel 2.4.17 and boot-floppies 3.0.19. The case why I've encountered this at all, was, that selecting Initialize a Linux Partition caused the installation system to restart, but I was told that this is an APUS kernel specific thing. But the following shouldn't be kernel specific, and it was also not known if this behaviour is erratic or if it is the expected behaviour of the system, so I was told to post this to this list. So here we go. When the installer restarts, it always starts in the current console the user is in. For example, when I change to console 3 shortly after selecting the ominous Initialize a Linux Partition menu point, it will start in console 3 (quite practical to see the kernel output on console, I am using -v ;) ). Otherwise, if I change to console 2 and the installer systems starts there, this is quite a bad idea, because on console 2 no keyboard entry can be done anymore (console 2 is the one in which a shell could be started by pressing enter during the installation). So, what do you think? Is this unexpected, or is it just the way it should be? With other words, should I file a bug against the boot-floppies, or is it just the way it should work and used for debugging? The problem is that we can't include all languages on a single b-f set for the most widespread architecture (1.44 disks on i386). That way we dont have to abandon any language due to simple space considerations. Maybe we could split it into European and Others (yes, I know that several European languages are spoken all around the world...) Yes, in debian-italian we were talking about many possible solutions and we pointed to this as the best solution. The second best solution is to create a disk per language/country. Bug#136842: Orthographic mistake in german Version-Info message
Package: boot-floppies Version: 3.0.19 I've encountered a minor orthographic mistake in the german installation welcome message (the requester Version-Info). I could hunt it down in #http://cvs.debian.org/boot-floppies/scripts/rootdisk/messages/de/release_notes#. At the end of the first paragraph it reads ...starten lässt und repariert werdn muss..., but it should read starten lässt und repariert werd*e*n muss I think it would be a good idea to correct this mistake, as the Version-Info is the first message you will be seeing of the whole debian installation, and it is the message definitely everone who selected german installation will be faced with. Sorry that I did not append a fix for it (as it would definitely be very easy to fix, but for some other reasons I don't have any working linux installation atm at all). This is caused by legacy newt/slang/termcap problems. The patch to dbootstrap should be pretty trivial. For the multiple-rootdisks option, it's probably just a question of hacking the boot-floppies makefiles appropriately. Personally I have a slight preference for storing extra languages on the CD, just because I would rather not double the (already large) number of root disks. But either would be OK. p. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: Unexpected console switch of the installation screen
On Mon, Mar 04, 2002 at 11:25:31PM +0100, Andreas W?st wrote: Hi I've encountered some interesting behaviour of the debian installation system during a woody installation on an Amiga4000 APUS box (architecture: powerpc, flavor: apus), using kernel 2.4.17 and boot-floppies 3.0.19. Kind regards, Andi The restart bug on Initialize has been fixed. (A release is due shortly.) As far as what happens when it restarts, I guess that's just weird behavior and outside the realm of planned events ... unless someone knows what's going on and can fix it without too much trouble. -- *--v- Installing Debian GNU/Linux 3.0 v--* | http://www.debian.org/releases/woody/installmanual | | debian-imac (potato): http://debian-imac.sourceforge.net | |Chris Tillman[EMAIL PROTECTED] | | May the Source be with you | ** -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#131030: Please check this patch
I saw your post in January where you checked and fixed up the kernel script bootprep.sh for boot-floppies. Would you check this patch which I think might close bug #131030? I suppose bootprep.sh itself wouldn't need to change; I just thought it might be well to carry the changed variable name through.
