It'll fall back to an English installation. Serial console is supported
on i386 too. The only time you wouldn't want to turn LANG_CHOOSER on
would be on architectures that don't ever support framebuffer.

For ia64 and hppa, there will be frame buffer support in the kernel, but
(for hppa, anyway) it might not support the particular h/w. Also the
install might be done via serial console. Will lang chooser drop back
to something sensible in those cases too?

Yup. Again, the hardware doesn't support fbcon situation applies to
i386 too, depending on your particular video card.

New basedebs available next pulse

2002-03-04 Thread Anthony Towns

Hi guys,

New basedeb sets will be available after the next pulse, and should
include pppoeconf, etc. Additionally the 1.44 and 1.2 floppy images
for i386 might have some chance of working this time. It'd be nice if
someone were to test it.

Cheers,
aj

If you want a separated bug report for each thing, okay.

I want to know what you're actually trying to do, so I can be sure not
to break that when I try to fix whatever you've inadvertantly broken.

  In particular,
* require newer makedev, fixes build problems on m86k and arm
* added additional devices to the device list, especially input and usb
needed for modern device drivers (Joysticks, USB, Scanners)
breaks basedebs building, and I have no way of telling exactly what the
problem was you're trying to solve.
Which problem? A base system comes out-of-the box without any device
files for the input-style drivers. Is this wise,

Look, I don't care about the arguments -- that's for the people who're
spending their time working on boot-floppies to grok. I just want to
know what they actually *are*.

In particular, the new MAKEDEV dependency stopped the binary-basedebs target
from working on potato systems, which includes ftp-master, which happens
to be where I build basedebs tarballs. I happened to be able to work out how
to avoid building the devices tarball at all, in this case, avoiding the
issue.

But the point is: if you're make an NMU, make sure the problem you're
trying to solve is in the BTS.

Also, base is _not_ up for random additions.
* added pppoeconf to the packages list, better choice for DSL users
As said. There was a good chance to ask and stop the package.

And I would've had you bothered to file a bug about this so I could
actually tell why you were trying to do something and evaluate if it's
worthwhile. But you didn't, so I couldn't.

NMUs are great, but for them to work, you need to go out of your way to
make sure the maintainer's in the loop.

-boot put back in the cc's, because I suspect other boot-floppies hackers
will want to NMU debootstrap in the future too.

Cheers,
aj

Did not help. Since the 2.2.x kernel breaks too, the loop Zombies must
be symptoms, but not the reason. The funny thing is:

 - it is mounted the first time, works, but on del_loop the ioctl fails
 - disk is umounted though!
 - zombie loop task appears
 - next time when the disk is mounted and the same file is attached to
loop device, another loop0 process appears
 - when it is done, del_loop fails again, but this time, the disk cannot

Well, I'm not sure it makes sense for translators to follow re-filling
of text, since word lengths are not consistent. Why not just use
'diff -b'? Or is there something I'm missing?

Agreed, it does not make sence at all to obey the original line wraps.
Thanks for the tip. I tried inserting the -b option into doc-check but
it only helped in the case were the indentation was changed without
changing the line wraps. It took away a few lines though, so it actually
helped marginally, but not that much.

I just do not quite remember. I believe, the problem (from UI point of view)
was that the menu itself contained just a single word for every language, while
the status bar has all the information. So the idea, if I remember correctly,
was to get rid of this simple menu in favour of something more instructive.

Yes, it's clear that the LinuxCounter stats are far from ideal for this
 purpose.

You are welcome to include Catalan if you can find space on the disks.
If this involves deleting support for some other language, you will need

Catalan would be more useful than whatever victim you have chosen.

Re: cvs commit to boot-floppies/utilities/libfdisk by blade

2002-03-04 Thread Loren Jordan

Hello again,

I would be happy to try this out.

I did try the bootbf2.4.iso created on Feb 16 2002 at
http://people.debian.org/~blade/boot-floppies/cd-iso/bootbf2.4.iso

The kernel found the cciss device, (determined by cat
/proc/partitions)and after manually creating the /dev/cciss/c0d0... files,
I was able to fdisk them. I didn't continue with the install because
dbootstrap didn't see the available disks.

It looks to me like the required patches for makedev and dbootstrap have
been put into CVS so if you could whip up another iso with this new stuff,
I would be happy to report back with my findings.

Thanks!
Loren

Do we really need this chopping languages away?

The problem is that we can't include all languages on a single b-f set
for the most widespread architecture (1.44 disks on i386).

Wouldn't it be a much better solution to split up the affected root
disks in two parallel official LC-enabled versions offering a different
set of languages (English should be common, I guess). That way we dont
have to abandon any language due to simple space considerations. Maybe
we could split it into European and Others (yes, I know that several
European languages are spoken all around the world...)

No matter which language you may otherwise choose to chop away, still
e.g. Catalan and Danish are currently not included in the first place
even though they are actually by far the best updated languages
currently.

I don't know if this is enough as an argument.

That's useful information, but it's not totally compelling on its own.
You have to convince us that more people will benefit from adding
Catalan than would lose out if we remove Polish. If the Polish
translation is so outdated as to be useless, that's easy: removing it
wouldn't harm anyone, so Catalan must be an advantage. I don't know if
that's the case or not.

Also, with Hungarian gone, Polish is the only remaining Eastern European
language in the list (whereas Catalan would add yet another Western
European one, of which we already have several). So from the point of
view of geographic balance I would be a bit reluctant to make that
particular change.

Do you have statistics for the number of Catalan speakers who don't also
speak one of the other supported languages? For example, there would be
less advantage in adding it if, say, the existing French translation is
actually usable by 50% of the Catalan-speaking population.

Unexpected console switch of the installation screen

2002-03-04 Thread Andreas Wüst

Hi

I've encountered some interesting behaviour of the debian installation system
during a woody installation on an Amiga4000 APUS box (architecture: powerpc,
flavor: apus), using kernel 2.4.17 and boot-floppies 3.0.19.

The case why I've encountered this at all, was, that selecting Initialize a Linux
Partition caused the installation system to restart, but I was told that this is an
APUS kernel specific thing. But the following shouldn't be kernel specific, and it
was also not known if this behaviour is erratic or if it is the expected
behaviour of the system, so I was told to post this to this list.

So here we go. When the installer restarts, it always starts in the current console
the user is in. For example, when I change to console 3 shortly after selecting the
ominous Initialize a Linux Partition menu point, it will start in console 3 (quite
practical to see the kernel output on console, I am using -v ;) ).
Otherwise, if I change to console 2 and the installer systems starts there,
this is quite a bad idea, because on console 2 no keyboard entry can be done
anymore (console 2 is the one in which a shell could be started by pressing enter
during the installation).

So, what do you think? Is this unexpected, or is it just the way it should be?
With other words, should I file a bug against the boot-floppies, or is it just
the way it should work and used for debugging?

Kind regards,
Andi

The problem is that we can't include all languages on a single b-f set
for the most widespread architecture (1.44 disks on i386).

Wouldn't it be a much better solution to split up the affected root
disks in two parallel official LC-enabled versions offering a different
set of languages (English should be common, I guess). That way we dont
have to abandon any language due to simple space considerations. Maybe
we could split it into European and Others (yes, I know that several
European languages are spoken all around the world...)

Yes, in debian-italian we were talking about many possible solutions and
we pointed to this as the best solution. The second best solution is to
create a disk per language/country. The second solution will of course
require some more space but could be really powerfull including in the
single disk not only the language but also good defaults for the
character set, the locale and the keyboard.

Bye,
Giuseppe

P.S. I compiled for the first time the b-f and I found that 'make
checks' doesn't check the availability of sudo. Where may I correct this
in order to do the check?

Bug#136842: Orthographic mistake in german Version-Info message

2002-03-04 Thread Andreas Wüst

Package: boot-floppies
Version: 3.0.19

I've encountered a minor orthographic mistake in the german installation welcome
message (the requester Version-Info). I could hunt it down in
#http://cvs.debian.org/boot-floppies/scripts/rootdisk/messages/de/release_notes#.

At the end of the first paragraph it reads ...starten lässt und repariert
werdn muss..., but it should read starten lässt und repariert werd*e*n
muss

I think it would be a good idea to correct this mistake, as the Version-Info is
the first message you will be seeing of the whole debian installation, and it is
the message definitely everone who selected german installation will be faced
with.

Sorry that I did not append a fix for it (as it would definitely be very easy
to fix, but for some other reasons I don't have any working linux installation
atm at all).

Kind regards,
Andi

I just turned it on in ia64, and it is basically working. Relative to
my previous non-i18n build, I see these problems:

1. Ugly borders to dialog boxes, using +-| rather than graphics chars.
(this on vga, not on serial). This is a real shame, the installer was
looking pretty smart in my non-i18n build. I'm assuming other i18n
enabled archs have this same problem...

2. Doesn't always redraw the screen. e.g. mke2fs output overwrites the
the display without clearing first, and previous dialog box is sometimes
visible round the endges of the current one. (this with French, not with
English).

3. The french message Installer le systeme de base - alt-F4 pour
deboguer, alt-F1 p is too long to fit the top of the dialog box.

I did vga installs in French, English, and Janpanese, and a serial
install in English. The serial install worked just like the non-i18n
install, didn't offer language choice, used nice graphics chars for
borders. No idea what the Janpanese one was saying to me, but the
screen layout, line lengths, etc looked like it might be working ok.

I used the i386 language set, although I guess I could use more on ia64
as there is no real space constraint.

I don't think there is any possibility of this happening with the

localised builds of the boot-floppies (in fact, you have been able to do
this for a long time).

The second solution will of course

This should be possible with LANGUAGE_CHOOSER too. I think patches
exist for those things, they just aren't integrated yet.

The basic layout was fine, but I couldn't type 'special' symbols like |.

Ahh. If your keyboard isn't in the US layout, that would explain the
difference. My knowledge about console keymaps and such is very close
to zero, so I hope someone else can fix this...

Well, in general you simply want the mac-usb variant if it exists or the
standard PC one otherwise. Maybe that's already done but the
inconsistent naming for the Swiss German keymaps (sg vs. mac-usb-de_CH)
causes the wrong one to be used there?

Yup. This is caused by legacy newt/slang/termcap problems. From what I
remember there is an assumption somewhere that the line drawing
characters are only a single byte, whereas a two-byte sequence is needed
for UTF8. Unfortunately I think we just have to live with it for the
time being.

There's an important bug open for this already. I don't know the number
off the top of my head, but the title is something obvious like
dbootstrap: screen not cleared.

Yup. ARM does the same. You can set the language list to whatever you
want, though it would be a good idea to check the stats to make sure the
translations you're including aren't desperately stale. Having an
install that is only half translated would make for a pretty miserable
user experience.

I think there is still time to implement either of these schemes if
someone does the work.

For the CD option, it is a case of liaising with debian-cd to find a
good place to store the languages on the disk, and a mechanism for
getting them there. The patch to dbootstrap should be pretty trivial.

For the multiple-rootdisks option, it's probably just a question of
hacking the boot-floppies makefiles appropriately.

Personally I have a slight preference for storing extra languages on the
CD, just because I would rather not double the (already large) number of
root disks. But either would be OK.

during a woody installation on an Amiga4000 APUS box (architecture: powerpc,
flavor: apus), using kernel 2.4.17 and boot-floppies 3.0.19.

 Kind regards,
 Andi

The restart bug on Initialize has been fixed. (A release is due shortly.) As far
as what happens when it restarts, I guess that's just weird behavior and outside
the realm of planned events ... unless someone knows what's going on and can fix
it without too much trouble.
