Re: verbose & quiet

2002-03-16 Thread David Kimdon

It would be good to document that the bootargs exist, if it isn't
already documented. I personally find this breakdown interesting, but
I think that's mostly because I find boot-floppies interesting in
general.

useless is a strong word, definately hard to keep up to date.

Bug#136328: #136328: b-f one-liner needs translating

2002-03-16 Thread David Kimdon

Hi,

We're still hoping to get the one-line translated. The reason I'm
bugging y'all is this message is outside the .po files so it would be
easy for it to slip through the cracks. When you translate it try to
keep the length down to less than 67 characters, otherwise it may show
up poorly on the screen.

Thanks,

-David

These still need someone to fix the translation:

Bug#134014: bterm causes split screen

2002-03-16 Thread Chris Tillman

reassign 134014 bterm
quit

I verified the problem also occurs with the same video monitor using
a different computer (9500).

Then I went back in to the split-screen system to poke around. I
executed dbootstrap in console 2, and the non-language-chooser
dbootstrap came up and looked great. This could be a workaround if we
can't get this fixed; disable language-chooser on oldworlds.

Next, I did ps -a and noticed that bterm was actually running the
dbootstrap with the split screen (duh, well I figure things out even-
tually).

So I'm reassigning this to bterm; dbootstrap looks great on its own.

Let me know what else I can do to help run this down further; I'd hate
to lose language-chooser for this.

Bug#134014: How can I help troubleshoot this?

2002-03-16 Thread Chris Tillman

This has been confirmed on another machine. I also checked it on an iMac,
it did not occur there, with or without video=ofonly. Is there some way to
troubleshoot this problem?

Maybe I could figure out when it started happening. Are older versions of
boot-floppies archived anywhere, or would I have to build a specific version
out of CVS?

Bug#138679: boot-floppies: messages too long

2002-03-16 Thread David Kimdon

Package: boot-floppies
Version: N/A; reported 2002-03-16
Severity: minor

This message:
#: bootconfig.c:2498
msgid "Install LILO in the MBR (use this if unsure)."
msgstr ""
"Installer LILO dans le secteur d'amorçage principal (MBR) (utiliser ceci en "
"cas de doute)"

In fr mode is too long. It scrolls off the screen, looks like this:

nstaller LILO dans le secteur d'amorçage principal (MBR) (utiliser ceci en cas de d

This could be fixed 2 ways:

1. make the phrase shorter since there is enough information in the top
of the box, there is much repitition on the screen (automatically
detecting similarily truncated phrases sounds hard.)

2. teach newt how to break lines properly.

Suggestions?

verbose & quiet

2002-03-16 Thread Chris Tillman

Here's a list of the effects verbose and quiet have on dbootstrap.

verbose:
For LiveCD, ask for the install media (should be livecd)
Always ask which mountpoint to mount volumes to
Warn that earlier kernels do not support newer filesystems
Warn that pre-2.4.1 kernels do not support ReiserFS 3.6

quiet:
Suppress confirm before writing the aboot bootloader
Suppress confirm before overwriting master boot record
Suppress 'Important Information about installed MBR'
Don't ask for confirm if only one archive path was found
No invitation to install additional modules from floppy
Don't mention that s390 doesn't support reboot
Suppress confirmation that detected interface is PCMCIA
Suppress message about successful DHCP configuration
Suppress long message about Lilo and large disk support
Suppress long message about PALO and large disk support
Suppress SGI disklabel note from Dvhtool
Don't chatter about how much disk space ReiserFS uses
Don't explain what Apple_Bootstrap is
Put the first partition mounted on / without asking
Don't offer to scan for bad blocks
Don't ask before initializing as XFS, ext2/3, ReiserFS, swap
Avoid trying to persuade a swap partition is good
Don't lecture before rebooting the system

Should this be documented somewhere? Or is it fairly useless info that
will be difficult to keep up to date?

Is that a "scroll bar"?

This recently sent to debian-boot. We should brobably fix this somehow.

From: "James A. Treacy" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Files in the archive with no extension cause problems
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

There are files which boot floppies controls that have no file
extension. This causes problems because apache assumes that they have
mime type text/plain and newbies don't can't figure out how to download
the file. A good example is dists/stable/main/disks-i386/current/linux .
Try wget -S http://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/stable/main/disks-i386/current/linux

Here are some alternatives:
 - add .htaccess files and add lines like:

 ForceType application/octet-stream

The problem with this is that not all mirrors are running apache.
Additionally, if a site has set 'AllowOverride None', apache will give
an error message when users try to download the file.
 - Have sites add 'DefaultType application/octet-stream' to either the
apache config file or to a .htaccess file. Using a .htaccess file has
the same problem as the first example. Besides the problem of getting
hundreds of mirrors to modify their apache config, there is the
additional problem that there are probably files in the archive that
are plain text that would then be consider as binaries.
 - rename all binaries with no file extension

What I suggest is that starting with the next release any files that
aren't plain text be given an extension that will convince apache that
they are binaries. The biggest hassle here will be changing all the
links to the files.

If you don't do anything about this, the webmasters will be forced to
send all mail from lusers complaining about this problem to this list. :)

Not subscribed to this list so blah blah blah mail to me blah blah blah.

How about trying mke2fs /dev/whatever from the virtual console 2?
Does that give an error message?

If that works, and you can mount it as root, at least you could go on
with the install.

Still unable to 'Initialize a Linux Partition' with bf 3.0.21

Hi

I've already reported this problem with bf-3.0.19 to both of these lists. On
linux-apus-devel I was told this would be a kernel issue, but on debian-boot, Chris
told
me it would be a dbootsrap issue and should be fixed.

Today I've downloaded the root.bin from
http://people.debian.org/~aph/debian/dists/woody/main/disks-powerpc/3.0.21-2002-03-13/apus/images-1.44/

new one. Still
using the 2.4.17 apus kernel.

But, unlucky me, nothings seems to have changed, the bug still appears,
and so I still can't Initialize a Linux partition.

I've quoted myself in the following lines just to give a short overview over the
problem itself:

> [First thing is,] that it is not possible to execute the point "Initialize a
> Linux Partition". After selecting this point in the menu, the screen goes
> white, and the installer system restarts!
>
> On console 3 I could read:
>
>Mar 3 ... (none) user.info init: Process '/sbin/udbootstrap' (pid 140) exited.
>Scheduling it for restart
>
>Mar 3 ... (none) user.info init: Starting pid 146, console /dev/console:
>'/sbin/udbootstrap'

Here I have to say that it now also didn't want to work with a virgin disk
without an already valid root partition (but of course already partitioned
from the AmigaOS side).

I wonder about this, because the 'Initialize..' part worked perfectly well with an
2.4.9 apus kernel (but this isn't much use to me, as 2.4.9 doesn't support dhcp, and
so I can't install
the rest of the system after the reboot *snif*).

I hope you can see my dilemma: kernel 2.4.9 is the only one which supports my
NIC and I can 'Initialize...', but it doesn't support DHCP. 2.4.17 does support my NIC
and DHCP, but I
can't 'Initialize...'..

ps: Why are the driver-1.bin and rescue.bin files in .../apus/images-1.44/ still
built, although
they doesn't seem to be needed?

pps: Does the new color of the selection bar really have to be red? It gives a
very bad contrast with the underlying text. Lucky me I've already tried to
install debian that much that I can recall the selection lines from my mind.

And oh, concerning the ongoing 'malformed release file' discussion: I very often
got this message in the last few weeks (when I've been trying to install with
other kernels than 2.4.17, but, as I said, no success with them, because of
the lacking dhcp support..)!!

Thanks for any idea, kind regards,
Andi

Bug#138653: boot-floppies: Language chooser '#' on right hand side looks funny

2002-03-16 Thread David Kimdon

Package: boot-floppies
Version: N/A; reported 2002-03-16
Severity: minor

On the right hand side of the language chooser screen there are ':'s and
and a '#' in a column. It is as if the '#' is supposed to line up with
the current choice, but it doesn't. The '#' does move down as I move
the selection down, but at the top it is one row below the current
choice, and by the time we get to the bottom it is 5 rows below the
current choice.

Version: N/A; reported 2002-02-24
Severity: important

Using a recent (3-5 days old) cvs build, I can perform a network install for
new-powermac without too much of a problem.

However, it is impossible to install from either a pre-mounted or instmnt
partition. An error comes up as soon as the installation folder has been
selected, stating: Cannot read /floppy/image.txt: Invalid argument.

When the OK button is pressed on this dialog, another with the same message
replaces it, at least 20 times. The only way out is to pull the plug, I think.

I checked the /floppy mount in vc 2, it looked ordinary. mount shows
/dev/loop0 is mounted on /floppy, type ext2 (ro).

ls -l /floppy gives
(abbreviated, and the permissions look appropriate):

4467 config.gz
1123 debian.txt
1527 install.sh
1261262 linux.gz
12288lost+found
881 readme.txt
126757 sys_map.gz
7type.txt

When I tried cat /floppy/debian.txt or cat /floppy/type.txt, I got
cat: read: input/output error
so it could list the files but couldn't read them. I was getting these
type errors in vc3 also.

The 3.0.20-version is flawwed fatally: it lacks RAMfs-support in the
kernel. The only version of bf I've managed to get working with floppies
was the 3.0.18-version from BenC from last november. Haven't tried any
version before 3.0.16 though, only have the Ultra1 since early Februari.

I've managed to install this U1 from floppies before. IIRC U1 and possibly
U2 are the only type of Ultras not affected by the bug you mention.
I've been told that from U5 and up booting from floppy isn't gonna work.
If that's because of the bug or not, haven't got a clue.

Then again, the 3.0.21 isn't working either. The RAMfs is built into the
kernel this time, but after changing the disk it freezes so hard it needs
a power-cycle (Stop-A didn't work :( ). No drive activity after I've
pressed enter to confirm the change of disk. Just a screen with the nice
logo of Tux with a sun on its belly and the kernel boot output.
(Just curious, but why does a sun-kernel-image have RTC enabled? Have they
introduced these in very recent machines?)

The last two messages are:
floppy0 WARNING disk change called too early
and then a the message to put in the root-disk and press ENTER.

Doing that results in the mentioned freeze.

Considering the U1s are esentially the only ultras even capable of booting
from floppy and even that is troublesome - I've had to go through at least
a dozen working (!) floppies to find one that would get accepted by the
drive + OpenBootPROM - I don't know if it is even worth it to try to get
this to work. Most other people seem quite content with having a
choice of either a bootable cd or a tftp-boot.
I'm willing to help out on this, but unforseen RL-happenings put my
efforts on this matter on hold until at least next weekend. :(

regards,
Thomas

Thomas - you're trying a floppy install on an Ultra? A lot of Ultras
have a firmware bug that breaks floppy booting. Just be sure that you
can get floppy booting to work with any disks before you start yourself
on a wild goose chase.

The release.sh code was broken; I fixed it by copying in the code from mips.

It's interesting to see how many different ways people can come up with to do
essentially the same thing:

i386:

cd ../$subarch/images-$size

This should be fairly clean now, except for the new upgrade-arch directories.
I don't know what the plans are there.

2002-03-16 Thread Chris Tillman

Package: boot-floppies

The install manual references amiga/install.doc, atari/install.doc,

absent from the current archive.

It looks like their generation is commented out in release.sh, and/or
incorrect in package-m68k.sh.

We do not advice users to use thirth console to debug, so we should not
put this hint too. I suggest this, any other ideas?

I think it would be better to find out why the C@utf-8 locale didn't
work, and where it came from. I thought it should work just fine, as
the C locale is present. Is this wrong?

(And I'm unable to find anything setting LC_CTYPE before debootstrap
is called.)
