Re: Woody disks (fwd)

2002-03-27 Thread Philip Charles

Some comments from a commercial end-user of Debian about woody CDs.

The installation went well and did everything he wanted.

debian-cd 2.2.13 (with updated base-woody and Debian_woody) and
boot-floppies 3.0.21-2002-03-19 were used in the building of the discs.

Phil.

It turned up this morning, and I have a machine also arrived this
morning to install them on.

Since I understand you're on the CD development team you might know the
appropriate place to mention a few minor issues:

1) The graphics are different. From the start the pseudo GUI boxes
don't have any borders, then when it comes to selecting modules there
are borders but using the wrong character set.

2) When I get to the end of the installation the system prompts me to
remove the bootable media, but it hasn't unmounted the CD and therefore
I can't eject it.

installing

2002-03-27 Thread Burjn Gbor

Hello,

It would be nice to see following line in syslinux.cfg on rescue
floppy:

   SERIAL 0 9600

(According to syslinux documentation it must be the first directive.)

With this, syslinux gives prompt on the first serial console *too*.
Installation may done without video card and keyboard at all, user can
pass options like console=ttyS0,9600 parameter to kernel.

woody compact ethernet not working after intial reboot

2002-03-27 Thread Rory Campbell-Lange

I'm installing debian woody compact on a DEC server which must be about
4 years old. The server has two ethernet cards, the second installed
because, I think, of problems with the second.

I managed to install the base system fine over eth1 (through
switch-firewall/NAT-leased line). I used the latest woody compact
flavour from ftp.uk.debian.org. I installed the kernel and modules
from the floppy image. On reboot everything went fine except that I
can't get any traffic through the eth1.

The system logs show some information about the eth1 interface,
including an error message, all prefixed with eth1:

--
Digital DS21143 Tulip rev 48 at 0X7880 IRQ5
eeprom default type autosense
...
then information about support for the following is listed:
10baseT
10baseT-FD
10base2
AUI
M11
then a warning:
No M11 transceiver found.
--

The card leds flash when I try to ping the network. Ifconfig shows the
correct setup for eth1 (eth0 isn't even loaded). I've changed the switch
from autonegotiate to fix on 10/half and 10/full. Still no luck.

The only thing I did which I can imagine making a difference to the
setup was that I chose to remove pcmcia support(!)

Any help _much_ appreciated.
Rory

no suitable flavor: POTATO ok but WOODY not yet

There is no equivalent to the UDMA 66 potato flavor for the woody.
Many users will need PDC202XX and N_HDLC support to install woody via
network and will be very disapointed if they can't find a flavor to do
so.

It will be a good idea to add N_HDLC support in bf2.4 flavor.
