I'll check. Japanese docs are catching up now, I'm trying to build them.
There are a few remaining glitches before Japanese docs build again.

Okay, I just committed them.
Junichi, you could also patch po2sgml to handle Japanese quotation, I

I found out that I had to manually create a floppy with
a /boot populated with necessary modules, In my case
3c509.o, sunrpc.o, lockd.o and nfs.o.

The install then went on but it Oopsed a bit later. I
mailed this list twice today about exactly this. Oh
btw, this was for the newest woody floppies, I also
tried potato ones, but that one just didnt get any
further than what it did for you, I think

Floppy install via NFS

2002-05-06 Thread Darryl Caldwell

Hey gang,

I am trying to install Potato on an extra machine via NFS. I've double
checked that NFS is working on the server by mounting it from another
RH box. No problem. debootstrap fails, reporting "invalid argument". So I
go to a shell and enter the mount command by hand:

mount -t nfs 10.2.4.7:/mnt/cdrom /instmnt

mount reports a failure: invalid argument

Tailing the log on server shows that it authenticates the client with no
errors.

Anyone else jump this hurdle?

I am going to answer myself here. I had to pre-load
sunrpc.o, lockd.o and nfs.o, in that order. I could not
find this mentioned anywhere in the Debian install
manual, maybe this should be added.

Anyway, this got me further along the road. Only now,
when the install tries to install the rescue floppy, it
crashes and burns.

"Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual
address d85f71f8" (bla bla bla process: zcat)

I didnt have any way of cutting and pasting the oops,
sorry. I might add that the box has 16mb ram, and no
configued swap.

I didn't see this tread until today, but this weekend I was doing an
install and had the same recursive loop on a standard pentium 166. I
downloaded the floppy disks from the same place as the other guy:

ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/
/debian/dists/woody/main/disks-i386/3.0.22-2002-04-03/images-1.44/bf2.4

-rw-rw-r-- 3 debian debian 1308 Apr 1 08:18 README.txt
-rw-rw-r-- 1 debian debian1474560 Apr 1 08:17 driver-1.bin
-rw-rw-r-- 1 debian debian1474560 Apr 1 08:17 driver-2.bin
-rw-rw-r-- 1 debian debian1474560 Apr 1 08:17 driver-3.bin
-rw-rw-r-- 1 debian debian1474560 Apr 1 08:17 driver-4.bin
-rw-rw-r-- 3 debian debian 16895 Apr 1 08:18 kernel-config
-rw-rw-r-- 1 debian debian1474560 Apr 1 08:17 rescue.bin
-rw-rw-r-- 1 debian debian1474560 Apr 1 08:17 root.bin

I'd try the incoming floppy images (where are they?) as suggested and
inform back to you about it. But the images still seemed bad in Sunday
as far as I can tell. I killed the install from the other shell and
just finished the install by apt-get'ing the packages I needed so all
was well in the end.

Since you said: "Well I can't do anything without a debug log. Set
DEBCONF_DEBUG=. and reproduce it, log output."

How does one go about setting that? Must I rebuild the installer or just
sent it as an env var or pass in kernel command line?

Jeff

mounting root over nfs

2002-05-06 Thread John Bäckstrand

I am using vanilla bootdisks, with rescue.bin and
root.bin from 01-apr-2002 03:17. I am trying to mount
root over NFS.

I have one diskless 486 with a floppydrive. I am
booting the rescue.bin and loading root.bin, with no
parameters.

First of all, modProbe gives me "modprobe: Can't open
depencies file /lib/modules/2.2.20/modules.dep (no such
file or directory)".

I can set up my keyboard alright. I can also pre-load
my 3c509.o from /boot on a floppy, and my card is
detected, I can also ping the machine. Now the
installation program say: "No hard disk drives could be
found and the network is configured. Please select
"Next" to mount the root filesystem via NFS. Select
"Alternate" instead if you need to load essential
modules from floppy to make the hard disk drives
visible." I choose Next, and a dialog flashes up, but
immediately disappears. I can barely see what it says:
"The installation program is determining the current
state of your system and the next installation step
that should be performed". It immediately disappears,
and the message from modprobe is repeated, and I am
thrown back to the same prompt again.

I have tried to manually mount the nfs-share to
/target, but that gives me "Mounting
10.69.25.2:/home/sandos/leo on /target failed: No such
device". The logs on the server says that "May 6
17:01:30 slask rpc.mountd: authenticated mount request
from leo:904 for /home/sandos/leo (/home/sandos/leo)".

Should this not be working? Am I doing something
terribly wrong?

Documentation-bug/Bug

2002-05-06 Thread John Bäckstrand

Ive been trying to install debian on a diskless
computer. Idea was to install TO a nfs-root, fetching
debian itself from http or ftp. Is this possible at
all? Ive seen some (very) faint indications that this
could be possible.

Ive been using the latest woody-floppies as of today
(2002-04-06). First, I receive a lot of "can not find
modules.dep" error messages when I boot the floppys,
and the manual also says (regarding pre-loading
modules):

"Extract the kernel and modules for the flavor that you
want to install with...
  a.. su
 tar -zxvf
/cdrom/debian/dists/woody/main/disks-i386/current/bf2.4
/drivers.tgz
 tar -zxvf modules.tgz
 less lib/modules/2.4.18-bf2.4/modules.dep

a.. Read the modules.dep file, locate the modules
that you are looking for, and note their dependencies.
Note the order in which the modules depend on each
other. Do the same for each dependency, unless you have
a list of modules that can be loaded without
dependencies."

The modules.dep isnt in the drivers.tgz or modules.tgz,
Im afraid, and this seems to correspond to what its
echoing on the screen when I boot. This doesnt seem
fatal though. Is this a mistake or is the documentation
somehow out of synch or erronous? A wild guess is that
I could generate the modules.dep file by chrooting to
the mounted boot-floppy, but Im not 100% as of how to
do it.

I then tried to just copy 3c509.o to a /boot on a
floppy, I was hoping it had no dependencies. That did
work.

Just a comment, from a users-perspective: using the
potato disks was much easier, I then only had to use 2
floppys, root and boot. Now I have (?) to use a
self-made disk with a choosen module. I can understand
if the 3c509 modules was taken off of the root.bin, but
why isnt it enough to just pop a driver-X disk into the
drive and hit enter? Is this for loading drivers at a
later stage?

install-method: ftp/http
install-url: http://ftp.de.debian.org
proxy: none

install-lang: de
modconf: epic100
boot-method after install: floppy

after normal installation of the base-system and a normal reboot, I
configured the usual things:
timesettings: gmt: no; region: europe; city: berlin
password-settings: md5: no; shadow: yes
setting password for root
creating a user and setting the password

after this all, the configure-script entered a endless loop, starting again
at the time-settings and password-settings with the previous selections as
default.

As I thouth I did something wrong, I made a new install - with the same
result.
Only by killing the configure-script from another console, I could proceed
to the exim-configuration.
Of course after killing the configure-script, here wher a few errormessages,
but the system seems to work. Only apt-setup did not work, so I had to edit
/etc/apt/sources.list manualy.

If you need more information, just mail me.

works nicely in my dhcp.conf. Maybe old PROM versions can't handle this
properly. If so, we should document this in the manual.
