Nothing :(

I have faced a problem with booting from two disks. The trouble seems
to be in Herbert's kernel, since mine boots and loads debian-installer
initrd image.

There is a trouble with initrd directory tree creation: after boot I
get cycling messages

Your laptop has 8mb of ram, right? Non-upgradable? That's probably
the problem. I don't know how large the D/I initrd is, but if it's
too much larger than about four or five megs the system could fail
silently on load.

Dunno what to do about it, though. I've been having similar trouble
getting something working on my 386. The latest version of Debian I
could install on it was 2.0. :P

No. Any new ia64 installation should use GPT, not FAT-style MSDOS labels.

The "xx" in my example did not need to be a real or a virtual package.
In fact when you're trying to subscribe to a package that doesn't exist
you just get a warning :
| $pkg is neither a source package nor a binary package.
| It may be a 'virtual package' or a mistake...

But you can confirm the subscription just like usual.

loading the initrd

2002-12-11 Thread Noah L. Meyerhans
I've got images building on Alpha, but I can't seem to get the kernel to
load the initrd from the second floppy. (The kernel+initrd are about
600k too big for a single floppy.)

I've tried various combinations of parameters to the kernel. If I pass
"root=/dev/fd0 load_ramdisk=1", which is what boot-floppies pass to the
2.2 kernel, I at least get prompted for the second floppy, though it
subsequently chokes:
VFS: Insert root floppy disk to be loaded into RAM disk and press ENTER
request_module[block-major-2]: Root fs not mounted
request_module[block-major-2]: Root fs not mounted
VFS: Cannot open root device "fd0" or 02:00
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 02:00

If I pass parameters similar to what the x86 syslinux.cfg contains
(root=/dev/rd/0 devfs=mount,dall load_ramdisk=1), I never get asked for
the second floppy and the kernel panics with "cramfs: wrong magic". It
seems like this would be the right thing, except that the initrd hasn't
been loaded.

Thanks in advance for any hints.

Are you sure it's not reading from the floppy disk at that point? It
should be reading the contents of the disk into memory, which takes some
time due to the slow nature of floppy drives.

I should have looked at boot-floppies before replying;)
It ships /lib/locale/C@utf-8/LC_* files, this directory is ~34kB large
when compressed.
We can certainly follow the same way, and see how it works here.

Alpha needs MSDOS or OSF disklables, depening on the firmware used. So
there needs to be a runtime decision.

AFAICT dash has no i18n support, so you can't use $"strings" bash syntax.
This does not seem to be a problem, since shell scripts currently do not
use translatable strings (except progress.config ;))

It is different with C files; the framework is in, and we can use dcgettext
in source files. But GNU libc requires that locale is fully installed
before displaying a message for that language. For instance, glibc checks
that /usr/lib/locale/fr_FR/LC_* files exist before displaying messages
in French. Given the size of these files, it does certainly matter.
This is overkill because we know that all strings are UTF-8 encoded, so
we only need to set LC_MESSAGES. So if we want to use dcgettext, we
have to figure out how to generate dummy /usr/lib/locale/xx_XX/LC_* files.

> We sure want all translatable strings to end up in the same .po file!

This is another issue, we could merge all those extra templates files
in a single PO file.

But discover already uses dcgettext, why not use the simple convenience
of _("string to be translated")? Is there a reason why a .c or a shell
script can't put in the same POTFILES.in as the templates file? We sure
want all translatable strings to end up in the same .po file!

An alternative is to store msgids in debconf 'text' elements, there
is then no need for libc gettext.

s390/s390x uses ibm disklabels, which don't seems to be supported by
parted.

Why not simply make this __MIPSEL__?

According to the source code there's sgi disklabel support in parted
1.6.3 (although incorreclty called 'mips'). Shouldn't we do:

--- libparted/disk_mips.c.orig Wed Dec 11 12:13:54 2002
+++ libparted/disk_mips.c   Wed Dec 11 12:14:00 2002

 static PedDiskType mips_disk_type = {
next: NULL,
- name: "mips",
+ name: "sgi-mips",
ops:&mips_disk_ops,
features: PED_DISK_TYPE_PARTITION_NAME | PED_DISK_TYPE_EXTENDED
 };

since there are many mips based systems not using sgi disklabels. The
autopartkit should check for __MIPSEB__.

Oh, I see. What about the virtual source package, since debian-installer
isn't really the source package for all of these?

Everything works automagically, I don't need any override. Anything
sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED] is automatically forwarded to the subscribers of entry
xx who have the keyword "cvs" enabled.

The web pages don't know anything about the virtual packages ... so
you'd get a 404 for http://p.q.d.o/debian-installer

At least, you're not generating more work for me. Just maybe more
bounces because more people use it but hey ... :)
