Problems booting from floppy
Hi guys, I have decided to give debian a chance. So I downloaded the "woody" image from the web, burned the CD. The problem is that my computer doesn't boot from the CD. So I've been trying to boot from the floppy to install from the CD. I have tried the three floppy images I have found on the CD to no avail. I am talking about: \dists\woody\main\disks-i386\3.0.23-2002-05-21 ..\compact\tftpboot.img ..\bf2.4\tftpboot.img ..\idepci\tftpboot.img The furtest I have gone is with the first one, i.e. the "compact" one. The last messages I am getting are: Partition check: hda: hda1 hda2 < hda5 hda6 hda7 > request_module[block-major-58]: Root fs not mounted VFS: Cannot open root device 3a:05 Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 3a:05 Any ideas? How can I create this floppy to boot and install debian from there? I would be greatly appreciate on your input. No, I'm not suposed to know anything about the whiptail interface if i haven't hacked on it. All i can say, from a quick test, is that the same problem is reproductible with whiptail 0.51.4-6 (from testing). Asides from this, if you think gnome-terminal is broken in some way, then I suggest you speak with Marillat about it; I'm sure you'll understand each other very well. thanks. -- Robert Millan -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". how to use files in people.debian.org/~tfheen/d-i/images/daily/ ?
I want to do a "Boot from floppy, install from net" install with d-i. I've searched archives of this group, I've read http://people.debian.org/~mbc/di.html http://people.debian.org/~pere/debian-installer/getting_started.html http://cvs.debian.org/*checkout*/debian-installer/doc/scenarios.txt?rev=1.4 as well as other files in http://cvs.debian.org/debian-installer/doc/ but still haven't found anwsers to my questions: Do I need a minimal set of one, two or three floppies to do a net install? Which of these files I use, and in which order I boot them: http://people.debian.org/~tfheen/d-i/images/daily/net-initrd.gz http://people.debian.org/~tfheen/d-i/images/daily/vmlinuz There was also once a file named: http://people.debian.org/~tfheen/d-i/images/daily/net-1440.img but it's not there any more. I've read in the list archives, that you "have made the image larger then the size of a floppy and it doesn't fit". Does it mean that it's now impossible to do a "Boot from floppy, install from net" install with d-i? Am I supposed to use dd or cp to put these files on the floppy/ies? For woody I used: http://ftp.pl.debian.org/debian/dists/woody/main/disks-i386/current/images-1.44/bf2.4/rescue.bin http://ftp.pl.debian.org/debian/dists/woody/main/disks-i386/current/images-1.44/bf2.4/root.bin and used dd to put them on the floppies, and all I needed is to boot from rescue.bin, then put in root.bin when prompted, and rest was from the Internet. But these files are 1.44M size. The new d-i are not 1.44M size, and I'm not sure how to use them. BTW: what's the difference between these directories? http://people.debian.org/~tfheen/d-i/images/2003-07-15/archive/ http://people.debian.org/~tfheen/d-i/images/2003-07-15/cvs/ thanks, -- Miernik jabber:[EMAIL PROTECTED] __ ICQ: 4004001 ___/__ tel: +48608233394 __/ mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Why software shouldn't be covered by patents http://bladeenc.mp3.no/articles/software_patents.html -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#201537: Can't install Sarge from CD without a working network
Package: install Version: jigdo download 2003-07-12 (can't install to find out more!) I want to install Sarge from scratch on a laptop. The laptop has a strange PCMCIA NIC so I have to install without network access. I downloaded (jigdo) the first 5 CD iso images. I have tried installing with CD1 and CD4 but get to the same dead end: All goes well with the install - sensible defaults, good hardware detection, easy way to leave partitions as they are. Unfortunately, when I try to install the base system the installer gives this message: P: 0 100 Downloading Release file I: Retrieving http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dists/sarge/Release E: Failed getting release file http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dists/sarge/Release Debian Installer Main Menu Installing base system into /target/ failed Check /target/var/log/. for the details. (the logs are empty) It seems I must have the network configured before I can install the base system to get the network configured - catch 22! Asking on the forums the suggestion is: install woody and then dist-upgrade. I can do that but thought you'd like to know about this problem. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi, Don't know if this is the right list because I dont have a patch but just a problem when I try to install SID. I get the setup menu, it also finds the kernel-modules but then I get the error "Failed to retreive installer module" It has some problems with Libc-udeb but don't know exactly what. I'm trying to install it on a HP LP1000r netserver. -- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
