Seconded as much loud as possible.. :-) Thus, we would know for usre whether it should be translated by a phrase with a verb or not (I started a discussion about this in d-l-french : should we use verbs or nouns(?) for main menu actions.original version uses verbs, but other languages may use another convention if they prefer, I guess) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Same difference. iso-scan is not intended to be put on CD's, and what I'm saying is you do not want to put it on CD's. There is a separate image type (hd-media) that you can use if you have an iso on a hard drive, this image includes not only iso-scan, but full support for scsi, ide, etc hard drives that will not fit on the CD initrd. -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature

install report
I am using locally built hd-media and bootfloppy images, with a hacked hw-detect (to support my laptop), busybox (to turn on a few more things), and the latest uploaded udebs of iso-scan and main-menu. Booted my lifebook from the bootfloppy, inserted my usb keychain, booted up into the installer. Instead of language selection I got the main menu (yes, it displayed). I selected a language, main-menu still had the first item as default. No matter what I did, it remained the defailt. I ran iso-scan and it found my iso in my home directory on disk (the netinst isos are a little bit too big for my 120 mb keychain). This is the netinst iso from the weekly build, the last working one. Loading installer modules died half way through, and then everything was dying with relocation errors linking to glibc, so I suppose a libc-udeb was loaded from the iso and it was not very compatable with the one some things on my image (seemed to be mostly busybox) were linked against. The version skew may be my problem (though symptomatic of a larger problem, perhaps), the main-menu default item thing is probably a general problem. -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature

The basic install from the=20= first CD works fine but when base-config asks me to scan the other CD:s=20= for more packages to install I get into difficulty. Chaskiel Grundman wrote: > using the netboot-initrd from today's (the 13'th) build on gluck, the tty1 > screen keeps clearing, and displaying the "can't load module vesafb" We're in the middle of a transition to new versions of several libraries; version skew is causing problems. main-menu was broken well over 24 hours ago, the fix missed dinstall yesterday, which is understandable. It then missed dinstall today, which boggles my mind. Depending on timing (dunno), the daily image builds may remain broken for more than another full day. We should be able to do much better than this. When someone fixes something, a quick post explaining what it is that's broken would be nice. So would making it a priority to get a fix into the archive. I found main-menu fixed in cvs, with the fix committed a full *18* hours ago (and maybe more like 30). Why was this not uploaded immediatly? FWIW, I have uploaded it, and this plus possibly a missing versioned build dependency in build/debian/control seem to have things working again. People, try to understand, we have a fixed number of days until release, and we just effectively wasted two of them. I'm sure tens of developer hours were wasted, plus how ever many testers get broken images. Committing a fix to cvs is only half the job. manual/auto partitioning conflict
Hi, when I use cvs udebs (sid udebs are horribly broken atm) for an cdimage everything works up to partitioning. Main-menu starts the manual partitioning automatically, then the "configure and mount partition" and as third the "Automatic partitioning". 1. It should ask what partitioner to use 2. Using one should be enough 3. I have 100MB ram, 256MB disk. The automatic partitioner wants to do way to much swap for my small harddisk. patch to build discover without curl
hi eric If have done some work on discover to make it build without curl. Most of the code was already there from jeff. See the attached patch! If added some autoconf stuff for a "--without-curl" option. I have never used autoconf before. So please feel free to tell me if I have got something wrong. (Could someone on debian-boot with some knowledge of autoconf look at this and comment if its good or bad) I also enable "--without-curl" in debian/rules. Could you please send us an update on your efforts to make discover ready for debian-installer. Can we access the latest version somewhere? CVS? I also sent a patch for the data reduction to jeff. Bug#215639: No CD eject button
Package: base-config Version: 1.33.18 Problem: I've tried to install Debian Linux 3.0r1 PPC on my Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver 2002) from a set of 7 CD disks. The basic install from the first CD works fine but when base-config asks me to scan the other CD:s for more packages to install I get into difficulty. There is no CD eject button on my mac model! There is of course an eject button on the Pioneer CD drive but it's completely hidden behind the front cover. The usual way to eject a CD from MacOS is to hit the eject button on the keyboard. That doesn't work in Linux (at least not on my Swedish keyboard). I've tried to use the eject command from another virtual console but the eject command has not been installed as part of basic install. Suggestions: 1) Add support for the hardware eject button on the keyboard. 2) Add a software eject button in the base-config program. 3) Add the eject command to the the basic install and add a description in the installation manual of how to use this from another virtual console. -- Anders Liljegren Mail: IT-stöd, Uppsala universitet Phone: +46 18 4717751 Box 887 Fax: +46 18 4717725 SE-751 08 UPPSALA mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sweden mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] (<130 chars, end with empty line) http://www.anst.uu.se/andelilj -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". di-main-menu won't start?
using the netboot-initrd from today's (the 13'th) build on gluck, the tty1 screen keeps clearing, and displaying the "can't load module vesafb" error. I've traced this to the fact that /sbin/di-main-menu is exiting immediately. I can't tell what, if any errors it's displaying on it's stdout since it clears the screen, and the installer environment doesn't include a less or cat -v. Since in your case the detecting of a network card comes up empty neither configuration nor retriever should be triggered. I somehow see this unwanted, unneeded and harmfull triggering of other menu items when selecting something in main-menu as a big problem. I guess there are some bugs in there or the code is broken by design. Like main-menu configuring the kernel-modules when you select "execute a shell", or your case (might not neccessarily related but feel the same). Its awfully confusing for the user that selecting A will do some realy wild things B, C, D, E and fail (which is why you selected A in the first place). Another thing. When it has to configure the network it should ask if it should enable the network retriver. Meaning choose-mirror should have an "offline" option that prevents the net-retriver from going around in circles. > > Secondly it would be better to order them "cdrom, net, floppy" and try > > each one in turn till one works. > > I am sure that no hardcoded order will work for all possible install > scenarios. We need something more flexible. If there is a "try and fail silently" scanning is harmless. The operative word being silently. Bug#215582: move short descriptions to the bottom in the dialog frontend
(for french translators : cdebconf is the debconf flavour which is used in debian-installer) Quoting Joey Hess ([EMAIL PROTECTED]): > cdebconf currently displays the short description from a template near > the top of the dialog box, in a special color. This is unlike debconf, > which puts the short description at the bottom of the dialo box, just > above the widget that the user can use to answer the question. I think > that debconf's behavior is better, because it encurages useful short > descriptions that can serve as prompts, and can be read in leu of > reading the whole long descrioption, to get the gist of the question if > the user is in a hurry. We indeed had talks among french translators about this. The current cdebconf behaviour make short descriptions more or less look like a "title". On the other hand, we now translate "normal" debconf short description as they should be : short, autonomous, descriptions of the question. This most often is the definition of a "prompt". This is why I recently suggested the netcfg translator to translate "IP Address?" to "Adresse IP". IMHO, the question mark looked strange in the cdebconf template because this string was shown like a "title" of the dialog box. If you implement this proposal, having short descriptions behave like they should be (prompts except for notes) will be easier to argument with package maintainers and translators. For all these reasons, I second this proposal. If it is to be implemented, please do this ASAP.so that maintainers and translators may adapt their descriptions and translations. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Floppy retreiver needs more work; some floppies are scsi devices. But that does not help with the problem I stated. The retrievers should depend on the hardware thats found yet. Until the floppy module is loaded and a floppy drive is found (is anyone working on detecting this?) floppy-retriever should be disabled. As long as no network module is loaded net-retriever should be disabled. As long as no cdrom drive is available cdrom-retriver should be disabled. Actually the net configuration should depend on a net module being loaded and cd-detect on a cdrom driver. That should prevent network configuration or cd searching before its available. Secondly it would be better to order them "cdrom, net, floppy" and try each one in turn till one works. Trying means no errors or user interactions. Don't ask for a cdrom if none was inserted. Even if I have net access I rather take the udebs from cdrom (if available) than download them via net. This will actually need support for multiple retrivers. Its a wishlist. Bug#215582: move short descriptions to the bottom in the dialog frontend
Package: cdebconf Severity: normal cdebconf currently displays the short description from a template near the top of the dialog box, in a special color. This is unlike debconf, which puts the short description at the bottom of the dialo box, just above the widget that the user can use to answer the question. I think that debconf's behavior is better, because it encurages useful short descriptions that can serve as prompts, and can be read in leu of reading the whole long descrioption, to get the gist of the question if the user is in a hurry. For example, here is a template from debian-installer: Template: cdrom-checker/start Type: boolean Default: false _Description: CD-ROM integrity check Warning: this check depends on your hardware and may take some time. Are you sure that you want to continue? This short description cannot stand on its own, and in a text-type frontend, the display will probably be something like this: Warning: this check depends on your hardware and may take some time. Are you sure that you want to continue? CD-ROM integrity check _ If cdebconf worked like debconf (or if more people used its text frontend), the natural thing would be to write the same question thus: _Description: Do you want to continue with the integrity check? Warning: this check depends on your hardware and may take some time. Note that currently in debian-installer, there are plenty of templates using the first style, and plenty using the second. But there is still time to fix them all to use a consistent style, and so I hope this change can be made soon, so they get the *right* consistent style. Note also that the exception to this rule is the note (and for cdebconf, error) question types. For these, in debconf, the short description is displayed at the top, same as in cdebconf. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable Architecture: i386 Kernel: Linux dragon 2.4.22 #1 Sun Oct 12 15:11:10 EDT 2003 i686 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature
anna's hard-coded priority list of retreivers
I keep stumbling over anna's hard-coded priority list of retreivers. static const char * const retrievers[] = { "net-retriever", "cdrom-retriever", "floppy-retriever", NULL }; anna defaults to using the one closest to the top that is installed. When I was working on floppy images, the image had both the floppy retreiver, which most users will need to use first, and the net retrevier, which is only useful at first if you have a very common network card that fits on the root floppy. anna's behavior made it try to configure the network first thing, which was wrong. Now that I am working on hard-disk-as-media installs, I have the cdrom retriever on the initrd, because most people will download an ISO to disk and it will be loop mounted. But for the few who won't do that, or who will mess up, I want to include full network support in the initrd, including the net-retreiver. But if I do, it will try to configure the network first off, and download the installer from the network, which will be wrong 99% of the time. Of course, net-retreiver has to come before floppy if you're doing a netboot or CD install. It looks like I could get away with moving cdrom-retreiver above net-retreiver, at least for now. Until another image came along.. This hard-coded list defeats modularity, and seems comnpletly wrong. One fix for my problems would be to ship a config file in the initrd, /etc/retriever. This could be provided by a udeb or whatever to override anna's hard-coded default. I hope that's not the _best_ fix. Another idea I've had is to turn anna inside-out, removing it from the menu, and put the retreivers themselves on the main menu. Well, not quite, the menu items would really be separate udebs customized to the type of install, that picked a retreiver and called anna, forcing it to use that retreiver. Floppy: Configure language Retrieve modules from floppies Configure the network Retrieve modules from network This flows perfectly! At high proprity, you are prompted for a driver floppy, then it sets up the network with the modules probably loaded from that floppy. If network setup fails (maybe you inserted the cd_drivers instead), priority is lowered and you can see the menu and pick what to do by hand (load another drivers floppy to get the net drivers, or pick the new "Retreive from CD" that the cd_drivers floppy might have added to the menu). If you instead start in low priority and know you have a common card, you can skip right to retreiving modules from the network[1]. Cdrom: Configure language Detect CD Retreive the rest of the installer Here the menu item would see if the CD is mounted and use the CD retreiver. Failing that, it would fire up the floppy retreiver, or any other retreiver that worked. Note that this menu item could just thunk to anna, so it would be very easy to implement, Eventually we would move the hard-coded list out of anna and into menu items like this one. netboot: Configure language Configure the network Retreive the rest of the installer Simularly, the third menu item here will use net-retreiver if it works, but will fall back to floppies in extremity. Again, this menu item could, at first, just call anna, using its present-day behavior. hd-as-media: Configure language Scan hard drives for an ISO Retrieve modules from ISO Configure the network Retrieve modules from network Here after it mounts the ISO and loads the installer from it, it would, somewhat annoyingly, still bother the user about setting up the network. (Perhaps that's ok; the user has to set up the network sometime..) If it cannot find the ISO, the priority is lowered, and the user can go on to a network install if he desires. Well this feels right to me, and not too dreadful to implement. -- see shy jo [1] However, main-menu would persist in highlighting the second menu item until you did it. Though I think this behavior of main-menu's can be fixed, by making it highlight the next item on the menu after a menu item that has successfully been called, instead of the first un-done item. Whatever, minor point. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

I agree. I don't see why this is necessary. Sure, malloc is slow if you need zillions of small allocations all the time, but I don't see the importance of speed in an installer. Code size and correctness are far more important. /Martin -- Martin Sjögren [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] GPG key: http://www.mdstud.chalmers.se/~md9ms/gpg.html let hello = "hello" : hello in putStr (unlines hello) signature.asc Description: Detta =?ISO-8859-1?Q?=E4r?= en digitalt signerad meddelandedel

Floppy will be images with floppy-retriever. Cdrom needs the cdrom-retriever and only one 2.88MB floppy. Net needs the net-retriever and network modules with high priority and has a size limit depending on the arch. Now that I slept over it I see that "foreign" could be as floppy, cdrom or net flavour. But floppy seem unlikely to be of use. But foreign can probably stand the bloat of combining all three together. > > 2. 10/12 Netinst image more or less unusable : should I report the bug?
When testing the netinst image currently available on gluck in http ://gluck.debian.org/cdimage/testing/netinst/i386/daily/sarge-i386-netinst.iso, I get the following after the language selection and some modules "retrieval" : Retrieving the module modutils-basic failed for unknown reasons. Aborting. Then, I'm bringed back to main-menu, but no other option works anymore This is probably a known bug, but who knows ? If this isn't, against which package shold this be reported ? BTW, is this the Good Way to test the installer ? From which packages if the netinst daily image generated ? From a CVS snapshot or from uploaded packages ? -- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This was a mistake. The only change that should be present is the libdebconfclient-dev (>= 0.47). (which should be libdebconfclient0-dev, as you pointed out elsewhere). Yes, this is bug #215403 (debconf_capb definition broken) crashing main-menu. We discovered it last evening, but it was too late to fix it for yesterdays archive update. > I noticed that /sbin/debian-installer will be respawned on the active > console, so when it dies while you watch alt-f4 it respawns on top of > the debug messages. I got around that using Ctrl-S in tty1 first, to stop the looping. > We had a pretty well working set of udebs and images before. Why > weren't they pushed into sarge as planed? Could one DD please get > the last working image, extract the versions of udebs and upload > those to sarge please. We should have a working CD image stored somewhere, if I remember correctly. I've uploaded the updated cdebconf, and we need to rebuild/reupload all packages using the debconf_capb() macro in the source to fix the problem. Anyone know why is the debconf_* macros are macros? If they were library functions, it would have been sufficient to upload a new cdebconf. They are not, so we need to rebuild. Would it be smarter to convert them to real functions instead? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
