DHCP or not DHCP ??
Now debain installer try to use dhcp to configure nethwork devices without asking to user. This is annoing because it takes a while if there isn't a dhcp server and it rteturns an error. I think that is better to ask to user if he want to go with dhcp or want to configure network using static adressing. If that is not an option i think that is bad to report an error only, i think that there must be a default fallback to configure the network manually. Whith the cvs server down i can't help more but i can try to supply pathes... let me know. Ciao -- Daniele -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? LVM config is broken ?
I have tryed to config lvm from the new debian installer but something go wrong. I'm using debian netinst images from 22/11/2003 build. Is lvmcfg supposed to work ? The problem is that when i selevt Cretae VG from lvmcfg main menu i get this error No usable physical volume found I have sucessfully created a partition whith type 0x0E (Linux LVM) and if i try to do pvcreate on console it works. In the log on console 3 i get only that error (with other unrelated messages): pvscan: ERROR pv_read(): PV identifier invalid reading physical volumes Ciao -- Daniele -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. 1.44 meg boot disk problem
I downloaded all 20 of the files from the following link: http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dists/stable/main/disks-i386/base-images-3.0 .23-2002-07-18/images-1.44/ The installation proceeds fine until I put the Base-18.bin disk in. The installation software informs me that I have put the Base-17.bin disk in, and when I hit enter, I am forced to go back to the beginning of the Base installation section. IMPORTANT: I went back to the link above and made a new floppy, making sure that I downloaded Base-18.bin and went through the entire install again. Again I had the same, exact, problem. Is it possible that the file named Base-18.bin at the above link is mistakenly Base-17.bin? I think it is. directed RFA: discover (1.x)
Hi guys, I'd like to request that the Debian-Installer team, or an interested member thereof, adopt the discover package. For now, all I really request is that an upload be done changing the Maintainer: field. We can continue to work on the transition and renaming issues. As should be clear to those who follow these mailing lists, it is Progeny's intention to maintain Discover 2.x for Debian once the d-i team is prepared for it to be uploaded to unstable (meaning: once we've settled the package namespace issue). Please send any Discover 2.x-related, non-debian-boot-pertinent questions to the discover-workers list. Please CC discover-workers when discussing Discover 2.x-related issues that *are* relevant to debian-boot. -- Branden Robinson | GPG signed/encrypted mail welcome [EMAIL PROTECTED] | 1024D/9C0BCBFB Progeny Linux Systems | D5F6 D4C9 E25B 3D37 068C | 72E8 0F42 191A 9C0B CBFB -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. I did not notice any progress on this since 11/18. [progeny.com #2385] Progeny's ticket #2385 doesn't talk about build issues: Subject: Discover 2: reduce size of discover udeb http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2003/debian-boot-200310/msg00042.html Makefile: - only include needed devicetypes (instead of excluding uneeded ones) - do not install old hwlist in udeb - compress udeb hwlists debian/control - add build dependency on python-xml debian/rules - do not include docs in udeb reduce-xml: - remove entries with kernel module unknown or ignore If you have better python-xml skills, you will probably find a better way to adress this node in the xml-tree. There's also a M$-Excel File in the source tar file (merged_vendor_list.xls). AFAIK debian policy does not allow proprietary data formats in source files. As noted elsewhere on the discover-workers list, almost all of the above is done. The exceptions are the reduce-xml issue, which I've sent a separate mail about, and the .xls file -- I don't feel removal is warranted because this .xls file works fine with the version of Gnumeric in Debian testing. Consequently, I do not feel that the file qualifies as being in a proprietary data format per Debian Policy. let the gates open...
The d-i CVS repository on cvs.debian.org is back in business. All pserver accounts have been disabled, and will have to be re-enabled on request with new passwords. Send a NEW password hash to [EMAIL PROTECTED], encrypted with my private key. May take until tomorrow before I begin enabling those. Debian developers should be able to commit to the repo already. The anonymous pserver access should work. Anything else on cvs.debian.org is not yet up, as far as I know. Since the PTS is down, commit emails would be delayed or lost. I have moved them to go directly to this mailing list, until the PTS comes back up. If you were not subscribed to the commit emails on the PTS, this will be some more traffic, sorry. If anyone has known-good CD images for beta 1 of the installer, please send me a gpg signed md5sum of anything you have. Until we can verify them, they will not be going back online. Now, for the future, cvs, particularly pserver commit access, is not secure enough to keep using much longer. We will be migrating to subversion, sometime after beta 2 is released; tenatively in the beginning of Janurary. For now, let's get synced up. I'm excited to see what you've all been working on this past week. Appendix A and B below explain how I verified the content of the CVS repository and CVSROOT. Appendix A: verifying the d-i CVS repository After the recent compromise of gluck, it's possible that the attacker made modifications to the d-i CVS repository. I used the following technique to verify the HEAD *only* of the repository: 1. Created a tarball of the CVS repo from gluck. It is here: http://gluck.debian.org/~joeyh/tmp/debian-installer.tar.gz md5sum: c028b7d2c0041e84a64f0ac1381d4045 2. Downloaded Pierre Machard's CVS checkout, dated Wed Nov 19 18:56:13 2003, and verified his detached gpg signature of the file. I call this tree pmachard-d-i-19-nov. 3. Restored a copy of the CVS repo from a backup I made of my laptop to CD-ROM on Nov 24th. The newest file was dated Nov 22nd. I call this tree joeyh-d-i-22-nov. 4. Downloaded a tarball of my d-i CVS checkout from kitenet.net. This was last updated Nov 17th, and had only one minor, known, uncommitted change. I call this tree kite-d-i-17-nov. (NB: there is a trust relationship between my laptop and kitenet.net. If my laptop were compromised, kitenet.net could be compromised trivially, and if kitenet.net were compromised, my laptop could be compromised with difficulty.) 5. As an unprivelidged user on a system running knoppix (paranioa), used cvs to check out d-i HEAD from the gluck CVS repo. I call this tree gluck-d-i 6. diff --exclude=CVS -ur --new-file between gluck-d-i and each of the other three trees. Manually examined the differences: pmachard-d-i-19-nov: - There are 70 thousand lines of changes between this tree and gluck-d-i. Leaving out the changes to po files, it is 7 thousand lines, which I read. All appear legitimate changes made since 19 nov. joeyh-d-i-22-nov: - same story as pmachard-d-i-19-nov, excluding po files, it all looked ok. Diff was much smaller, I'm more sure I missed nothing in this one. kite-d-i-17-nov: - Again excluding po files, it checked out ok. I am now reasonably convinced that d-i's CVS head was not compromised. While it's possible that they modified some history, it should be safe to put the repo online. Any branches in there (eg, the mrvn branch) should be verified to their owner's satisfaction before being used. If anyone wants to verify the repo using their own sources and a similar procedure, or send me additional gpg signed tarballs of known-good d-i checkouts to verify, that would still be good. Another means of verification that I have not done but someone could is check individual packages against the known-good source packages in the debian archive. Of course if someone has a backup of the actual d-i cvs repo lying around, that would be even better. Appendix B: verifying debian-boot's CVSROOT I also had to verify the debian-boot CVSROOT directory. I did this by inspection. log.pl was removed because it contains exploitable uses of files in /tmp. I don't trust a quick audit of dolog.pl, so I removed it as well (the log message is incorrect, it does not have known /tmp issues). d-i does not use dolog.pl, but debian-cd, boot-floppies, fair, mkdconf, and tasksel did, and will not currently send logs anywhere until someone updates them to use syncmail. syncmail was also removed from CVSROOT, and loginfo modified to use the known-good one in /usr/bin instead. newlog.pl was unused and deleted rather than waste time checking it. -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature

FWD: let the gates open...
I had meant to sign this with my debian key, so here goes. - Forwarded message from Joey Hess [EMAIL PROTECTED] - From: Joey Hess [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Mon, 8 Dec 2003 16:04:38 -0500 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: let the gates open... X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-5.5 required=10.0 tests=AWL,BAYES_00,RCVD_IN_SORBS autolearn=no version=2.60 The d-i CVS repository on cvs.debian.org is back in business. I don't trust a quick audit of dolog.pl, so I removed it as well (the log message is incorrect, it does not have known /tmp issues). d-i does not use dolog.pl, but debian-cd, boot-floppies, fair, mkdconf, and tasksel did, and will not currently send logs anywhere until someone updates them to use syncmail. syncmail was also removed from CVSROOT, and loginfo modified to use the

How to make confmodules abort? (was Re: Bug#214935: cdebconf-newt-udeb: OK button misleading...)
[I discussed privately with Joey Hess while the BTS was down, and am now switching back to debian-boot. I wrote some code to add an Abort button, its purpose being to return to main-menu, e.g. when a progress bar is displayed and user does not want to wait anymore] On Sat, Nov 22, 2003 at 04:45:11PM -0500, Joey Hess wrote: [...] This gets me wondering why we need to distinguish between back and abort at the debconf protocol level, but I suppose the problem is that the only way for a progress bar to abort is to kill the confmodule program? Yes. BTW, how do you know what the confmodule program is when main-menu has execed something else? I don't see how cdebconf could tell in this case that a config script is the thing to kill, and not main-menu. I see only 2 options: a. Either kill main-menu and restart everything b. Or only kill the config script. Of course (b) must be implemented. Config scripts can register their PID, e.g. by adding db_set debconf/confmodule_pid $$ in src/client/confmodule, which will automatically set debconf/confmodule_pid to the right PID when config scripts are shell scripts. Similarly the debconfclient_new function in src/debconfclient.c can also set debconf/confmodule_pid to the current PID. IMO having a single value is enough, there is no need to keep PID on a stack. Re: How to make confmodules abort? (was Re: Bug#214935: cdebconf-newt-udeb: OK button misleading...)
Denis Barbier wrote: Of course (b) must be implemented. Comments? If you're going to go that route, perhaps it would be cleaner to put the PID in the protocol: PROGRESS START 0 10 $PID foo/bar -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Re: 1.44 meg boot disk problem
On Mon, Dec 08, 2003 at 10:07:55AM -0500, James Caballero wrote: I downloaded all 20 of the files from the following link: http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dists/stable/main/disks-i386/base-images-3.0 .23-2002-07-18/images-1.44/ The installation proceeds fine until I put the Base-18.bin disk in. No, the base-17 file has 17 of 20 inside it and the 18 one has 18 of 20 (checked with a binary editor). I did this through a ppp-style install. Unfortunately the system was unable to detect that a ppp connection went down. I had to restart it manually through pon. If this happens to a newby s/he will sweat blood to find out a) what went wrong and b) how to get the ppp connection back on. So I suggest either to give the system a means to find out whether the line's still up or to give the user a possibility to redial. I'm tagging this report as normal not as wishlist, since I think that the install process should be as bullet proof as possible and since I think that connection loss while in ppp is not such an uncommon thing. *t -- System Information Debian Release: 3.0 Architecture: i386 Kernel: Linux maladers 2.2.20 #1 Sun Nov 4 15:44:23 EST 2001 i686 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C --- Received: (at 55403-close) by bugs.debian.org; 9 Dec 2003 00:34:35 + From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Mon Dec 08 18:34:35 2003 Return-path: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Received: from auric.debian.org [206.246.226.45] by master.debian.org with esmtp (Exim 3.35 1 (Debian)) id 1ATUrk-0001qb-00; Mon, 08 Dec 2003 17:32:36 -0600 Received: from katie by auric.debian.org with local (Exim 3.35 1 (Debian)) id 1ATUrG-Sm-00; Mon, 08 Dec 2003 18:32:06 -0500 From: Joey Hess [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] X-Katie: $Revision: 1.43 $ Subject: Bug#55403: fixed in base-config 2.00 Message-Id: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sender: Archive Administrator [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Mon, 08 Dec 2003 18:32:06 -0500 Delivered-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Source: base-config Source-Version: 2.00 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of base-config, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive: base-config_2.00.dsc to pool/main/b/base-config/base-config_2.00.dsc base-config_2.00.tar.gz to pool/main/b/base-config/base-config_2.00.tar.gz base-config_2.00_all.deb to pool/main/b/base-config/base-config_2.00_all.deb A summary of the changes between this version and the previous one is attached. However, the installation process breezed on ahead, leading to an empty list for the task installer and lots of errors and aborts when trying to put in more packages. This is not really a very good way to handle the situation. The user should have at least the opportunity to pause when something like this happens and try to work it out. It would also be nice for info on how to re-run the task installer (if that's the name for the thing which chooses an overall installation style and then gets all the packages). That would be nice even if things go well. I eventually traced the problem to the fact that my modem is using IRQ7 (possibly in combination with a conlict with the printer port trying for the same IRQ). Running setserial fixed it. It would be great if it just worked automatically the first time! After rebooting the hostname for the machine was not retained, and localhost was used instead. Apart from that it has been a wonderful experience, and I had no problems at all. I was following the published HOWTO. Since the bug in the partitioning (209286) is solved from partitioner 0.07, maybe the paragraph which warned not to use it can be removed from the above document (I actually used the partitioner, since, after having a look at the bug it was closed, and I had the right version of partitioner in the cd) I also tried to use autopartkit, and it didn't work. Maybe this depends on the fact that I tried it after having actually partitioned in the classical way (in fact I only wanted to look at it and see what it proposed). Ok, I had mounted partitions and the swap activated, but maybe autopartkit could umount them, before doing anything (if this is the problem). After all I allowed it to destroy my data, didn't I? ;) Anyway: using the automatic partitioner gave some errors, and I don't know if it's because I already had partition table or not... Thanks for all, btw, I think the system is very nice! :) Guido -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable Architecture: i386 Kernel: Linux localhost 2.4.21-5-386 #1 Sun Aug 24 13:14:58 EST 2003 i686

Would it be too hard to provide a back button so you can go back and redo the previous configuration step? Barring that (or perhaps complementarily), would it be hard to provide a single screen with a summary of all settings, where you could check and optionally change things without going through the entire wizard when only something minor needs to be fixed before you can finish the install? (Or maybe just a menu, perhaps something like what the current installer does.) Finally, it would be nice to have a help function clearly visible, where the ctrl-c feature and the instructions for rerunning base-config later could be accessed at any point (especially towards the end of the installation!) Currently, the logic follows this comment: # If they choose to use non-free, ask about contrib, with a # default of yes. Doesn't seem to make much sense to even ask, # otherwise. On the contrary, I think that you should ask about contrib only if they said 'no' to the non-free question: there are packages in contrib that, e.g., only have non-free build dependencies (OpenOffice is a notable example) and some users may wish to install that. On the other hand, if they said 'yes' to non-free, I can't conceive of any reason why they would not also want contrib, so I would suggest assuming 'yes' in this case. See Bug#124148 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=124148 I was installing Woody on this machine when it ran out of space (although I had planned to have 100M free) and I had to reboot. When it came back online it was stuck in an infinite loop: Loading /etc/console/boottime.kmap.gz Loading /etc/console/boottime.kmap.gz Loading /etc/console/boottime.kmap.gz I tried my best to stop it from tty2 but to no avail. From what I understand, /bin/sh calls /usr/sbin/termwrap and it calls /usr/sbin/base-config Following the instructions in the reference I tried to upgrade to some recent debconf but the problem persists. This leads me to belive that the problem is not in debconf but rather base-config. I was able to configure the entire system from tty2 and everything runs fine except on tty1 it keeps Loading that damn file. I am working with a Toshiba 610CT. Pentium 90Mhz. 24M RAM. 600M HD. PCMCIA Network installation with boot disks from stable release. Linux 2.2.20. Libc is libc-2.3.1-17 *** install.log exerpt *** Setting up libstdc++2.10-dev (2.95.4-11woody1) ... This is probably due to bugs in the packages. (Sorry; Debian's not perfect!) Simply trying to install those packages (or a slightly different set of packages) again may work around the problem, or at least move the installation process along a little further. If you decide not to try again, bear in mind that some packages on your system will be in a broken state until you manually resolve the problem. Packages failed to install. Retry? I can do some automatic configuration of your mail system, by asking you a number of questions. Later you may have to confirm and/or correct your answers. Bug#223388: find-partitions dosn't report the right type for 0x8E (LVM) partitions
* Daniele Nicolodi [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2003-12-09 00:32]: | Package: partconf-find-partitions | Version: the last included in debian-installer images snapshot | Severity: important | Tags: d-i | | The 'find-partitions' program report nothing as type for partitions | marked as type 0x8E (Linux LVM). This makes impossible to use lvmcfg for | configure LVM in the new installer. the old find-partitions program reported LVM if the partition has a filetype of 0x8e. The new one detect the filesystem on it. This will currently break lvmcfg. Either we change this back, of I must try to check something myself for this. signature.asc Description: Digital signature
