The list archive of debian-boot should have a thread this issue.
IIRC it needs an one-liner fix in build/get-packages.

General Feedback

2003-12-13 Thread Alejandro Bonilla
This ain't pretty much a Bug!!!

Debian Linux, would be a great Operating System, which is right now, but
would be better, If you could Create an Easier Installation Method.

- More Boot Options, And a easier "dselect" package in the installation.
- Some already installed packages, like the ncurses and the libncurses5
packages, which are always going to be used in the Installation and
others. As you will always change your hardware Support.

- A easier way to get the System running in the First moment, at least
to get to the Graphical Enviroment wothout a problem.

Also, is there a CD-ROM that a user can Download, that will make things
easier? Easier installation? Like with new Kernel's already running, so
we don't have to go and get and Download the kernel Sources to edit it
again?

Also some more stable plackages with the apt-get utility which won't
have that many conflicts and problems with other Operating Systems, I
have done my Donations so, Your Engineers can work harder in this.

Thanks for accepting my Feedback, and If I'am writing to the Incorrect
Inbox, please route me to the Correct one...

Thanks Again.

So it's not going to work unless you fix it and compile the package
yourself. The ppp-related part is done, it just needs somebody to finish
the code which asks the three questions with debconf.

No. I tried talking with joeyh on IRC multiple times, but I still have
not been able to get hold of him. My request is to include ppp-udeb in
the netinst initrd image.

daily build up and running

2003-12-13 Thread Martin Sjögren
Hello -boot.

After many woes, the daily build is finally up and running again. I
haven't had a chance to test the images yet, so I would appreciate if
someone could do that.

The URL is, as before: http://gluck.debian.org/~sjogren/d-i/images/

I moved away all the old images since I don't have the time to verify
their integrity.

Maybe I can not build the d-i image with my version of Debian?

Thanks a lot.

Debian Installer: Install Fails

2003-12-13 Thread Sam Williams
I was trying a "daily version of the installer" and trying to perform a
USB install. It seemed to work pretty well until it tried to load the
network driver. I received the following message:

"An error occurred while running modprobe -v xirc2ps_cs" The install
hung at that point. I have enclosed a copy of the inventory of the
laptop below.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Debian Installer: Install Falls

2003-12-13 Thread Sam Williams
I was attempting to install Debian on a NEC VErsa 5080x laptop. I used
the 3 floppy netinstaller.

I seemed to boot fine. It asked me the language I would like to use and
I selected "English" It then asked me to select my network card. I chose
xirc2ps_cs. It continued downloading things from the net and got 96% of
the way through downloading the installation components from the net
when it hung, while performing a usb-discover.

The laptop does have USB support, but the netinstall floppies hung at
the same place whether it was enabled or not. I have attached an
inventory of the laptop to this email. If you have additional questions
please let me know..

Debian Installer: Install Falls

2003-12-13 Thread Sam Williams
Recently attempted to install debian on an NEC Versa 5080x Laptop. I
experienced a problem when trying to install from USB. The NEC is an
older laptop with USB support. I can not boot directly from the USB, but
can use a boot floppy.

I first prepared my SanDisk UsbDrive as instructed in the installer
release-notes. I began booting from floppy and when we got to the second
stage of the install process we started installing from the USB drive.

I was asked only the following questions in the install. First, language
to proceed: I chose English. Second network card, I chose xirc2ps_cs.
Told the installer to assign the IP address using DHCP.

We then continued on in the installation process a little further until
I encountered the following ERROR:

FATAL ERROR: Cannot open disk drive.
Press any key to exit CFdisk.

System was hung at this point.

I have enclosed an inventory listening of all components in the laptop.
Currently, I have Redhat 8 installed and it is fully capable of booting
so I know the harddrive is functional.

If you have any questions please let me know..

Installation woes on Dell 8300 (SATA Harddisk)

2003-12-13 Thread peter robinson
Hi Debian People!

I was wondering if you could give me a hand...I am pretty new to Debian but
decided to try it out for my new computer, which apparently has too new
hardware to be supported by the 2.4.22 kernel.

The initial installation process hangs at
hda: attached ide-disk driver

Previously, detected the hardware reliably (it seems), including

ICH5-SATA: chipset revision 2
ICH5-SATA: 100% native mode on irq 9
ide0: BM-DMA at 0xfea0-0xfea7, BIOS settings hda:DMA,hdb:pio
(...)
ide0 at 0xfea00-0xfe07,0xfe12 on irq9
ide1 at 0x170-0x177,0x376 on irq15
hda: ST3120026AS, ATA DISK drive

The computer is a Dell 8300 Dimension "Special Edition" with a Pentium IV 3
GHz, 120 GB SATA Harddisk (7200rpm, 8MB DataBurst Cache), 1024 dual channel
DDR/400 memory and an 128 MB ATi Radeon 9800 Pro-8xAGP graphic card.

If you have any suggestions as to how to get Debian installed on this system,
I would be extremely grateful!...I imagine I will need to somehow get a newer
kernel version with support for SATA? How would I integrate this with the 3.0
installation DVD? I was not able to find a howto online...

THanks

Peter

Your English is very good!

However I have suggested some changes, which are not to do with
grammatical errors but change things that feel clumsy or oddly
expressed:

How about removing "do_bootloader = no" simply from
