I'm not sure what this has to do with the original question, but the simplified chinese characters used in the PRC can look _very_ different from the traditional forms used in Taiwan (anyway, it's not accurate to say the difference is `close to bold-versus-normal'). [One easy way to see an example if you use emacs is to view the `hello' buffer (C-h h), and look at the section `Difference among chinese characters' (you need a lot of fonts installed to see them all of course).] -Miles -- Would you like fries with that?

So that's led me to adjust the boot scripts a little, and I couldn't help noticing awkward constructs in /etc/init.d/discover like: ARGUMENTS=$(sed "s/#.*$//" $CONFFILE | grep "^boot " | cut -c6-) As long as you're using sed, you don't need separate executables for grep and cut: ARGUMENTS=$(sed -n "s/#.*$//;s/^boot //p" $CONFFILE) Similarly, the whole skip() function seems a little awkward. How about accumulating the list to skip once in a shall variable and just searching through that... SKIPLIST="" if test -f $CONFFILE; then test -f $SKIPFILE || SKIPFILE="" SKIPLIST=$(sed -n 's/#.*$//;y/ / /;s/ */ /g;s/^ *skip \([^ ][^ ]*\)/\1/p' $CONFFILE $SKIPFILE) fi skip() { echo "$SKIPLIST" | grep -wq -e "$1" } That sed script emulates the existing behaviour exactly, although including all the words after "skip", not just $2, might be nicer... SKIPLIST=$(sed -n 's/#.*$//;y/ / /;s/ */ /g;s/^ *skip //p' $CONFFILE $SKIPFILE) Note that that's "y///". Yuo can break the various sed commands into separate arguments, but then you have to put "-e" in front of each. --- Received: (at 166460-close) by bugs.debian.org; 6 Apr 2004 05:09:11 + >From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Mon Apr 05 22:09:11 2004 Return-path: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Received: from newraff.debian.org [208.185.25.31] (mail) by spohr.debian.org with esmtp (Exim 3.35 1 (Debian)) id 1BAipj-0002bX-00; Mon, 05 Apr 2004 22:09:11 -0700 Received: from katie by newraff.debian.org with local (Exim 3.35 1 (Debian)) id 1BAiit-0003Qo-00; Tue, 06 Apr 2004 01:02:07 -0400 From: David Nusinow <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] X-Katie: $Revision: 1.46 $ Subject: Bug#166460: fixed in discover1 1.5-8 Message-Id: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sender: Archive Administrator <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Tue, 06 Apr 2004 01:02:07 -0400 Delivered-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.60-bugs.debian.org_2004_03_25 (1.212-2003-09-23-exp) on spohr.debian.org X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-1.3 required=4.0 tests=BAYES_00,FORGED_YAHOO_RCVD, HAS_BUG_NUMBER autolearn=no version=2.60-bugs.debian.org_2004_03_25 X-Spam-Level: X-CrossAssassin-Scores: 3 3 Source: discover1 Source-Version: 1.5-8 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of discover1, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive: discover1-udeb_1.5-8_i386.udeb to pool/main/d/discover1/discover1-udeb_1.5-8_i386.udeb discover1_1.5-8.diff.gz to pool/main/d/discover1/discover1_1.5-8.diff.gz discover1_1.5-8.dsc to pool/main/d/discover1/discover1_1.5-8.dsc discover1_1.5-8_i386.deb to pool/main/d/discover1/discover1_1.5-8_i386.deb libdiscover1-dev_1.5-8_i386.deb to pool/main/d/discover1/libdiscover1-dev_1.5-8_i386.deb libdiscover1-pic_1.5-8_i386.deb to pool/main/d/discover1/libdiscover1-pic_1.5-8_i386.deb libdiscover1_1.5-8_i386.deb to pool/main/d/discover1/libdiscover1_1.5-8_i386.deb A summary of the changes between this version and the previous one is attached. This makes automatic processing easy. Removing the part after the comma from the database for the above countries yields no benefit. It's only Taiwan that's weird, because (1) the resulting long name isn't a real name at all, but the rather awkward construct: "Province of China Taiwan" and obviously (2) that isn't the self-declared name of the country[2]. > A different short name is more common (again, the UN name was probably > chosen for political correctness): > > KOREA, DEMOCRATIC PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF;KP => KOREA, NORTH > KOREA, REPUBLIC OF;KR => KOREA, SOUTH These names are[3] those chosen by the respective countries -- _that_ is something I thing ought to be respected (so if Taiwan were to suddenly start calling itself [in English] `Province of China Taiwan', well then the argument is over I guess :-). [1] The exceptions seem to be Laos, where the most common english name used isn't present, and perhaps North/South Korea, as discussed above. [2] Which as far as I can figure is "Republic of China (Taiwan)"; I'm not sure how one would actually fit this into the comma-separated-prefix scheme... :-/ [3] Again, as far as I can figure -Miles -- Quidquid latine dictum sit, altum viditur.

I'm just a naïve gaijin[1], but I'm not sure you're right about that. Written zh_CN and zh_TW look very similar to Western eyes. I've seen a comparison of the two in some Sun documentation, and they really just looked like the exact same glyphs in two different fonts. Like look at English lettering in bold versus normal weight. (Not *exactly* like that, but close). Sun Microsystems has a lot of expertise in this area. We have nothing to gain by taking sides political conflicts like this. The Debian OS can be customized by regional interests if needed. Beijing and Taipei can each make their own politically-correct forks of Debian if they need to, deleting offensive nomenclature about the other country. Similarly, Kurds in Iraq or Turkey may create "Kurdistan GNU/Linux", to the irritation of the Turkish government and the U.S. occupation force in Iraq. Chechen rebels or Basque separatists could fork Debian, too. IMO, we should neither try to take a strong position on these politically explosive issues, nor should we try to walk on eggshells. I think we should take a similar approach as we do to package management. If we have developer(s) willing to vouch for legitimacy of a locale, and willing to maintain support for it, we should include it. If some governmental interest needs to bowdlerize our distribution to satisify their political sensibilities, they can go ahead. I think it says a lot about Debian success that we've come as far as we have -- we're a long way from worrying about fortunes-off and the Purity Test. Now we're worried about pissing off governments. :) If any Chinese would like to offer me some education on this subject in private mail, please feel free. I have read the Wikipedia article on the Republic of China[3] already, though. [1] Yes, I know that's not a Chinese word. [2] At the same time, from my modest knowledge of Chinese history since 1949, it's hard to find "neutral" terminology. Neutral terms about this issue seem to get perverted over time into euphemisms for either unificiation or independence, and then become political footballs. Bug#242343: debian-installer beta 3 sparc netinst image failed to boot up on Ultra10
Package: debian-installer Version: beta3 Severity: grave Hi, I tried to install sarge with debian-installer beta 3 netinst.iso and 2004-04-02 daily unstable snapshot netinst.iso on UltraSPARC Ultra10, but kernel was failed to boot up with the failure of root filesystem mount. Ultra10 setting: - default IDE disk (/dev/hda), cdrom (/dev/hdc) - monitor and default keyboard is connected. No serial console. Tried image: - debian-installer beta 3: http://gluck.debian.org/cdimage/testing/sarge_d-i/sparc/beta3/sarge-sparc-netinst.iso - 2004-04-02 unstable daily snapshot netinsta image: http://gluck.debian.org/cdimage/testing/daily/sparc/20040402/sarge-sparc-netinsta.iso How to install: - I downloaded above both images, then wrote to CD-R. Booted up with "boot cdrom". Then SILO asked "boot:" default message. I hit only return key. Kernel started to boot up. Failed problem: - kernel couldn't understand root filesystem then VFS mount got panic. - monitor output said: ...kernel boot message... Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 00:00 Press L1-A to return to the boot prom sunmouse: Successfully adjusted to 1200 baud. Struggled: - I inputed the below and so on, in SILO prompt: boot: linux root=/dev/hdc mount=devfs, dall rw But VFS couldn't mount root filesystem as same as the above mentioned with the same message. I tried to install with woody sparc debian boot image, and it was completely succeeded. I think this is the current installer problem. This problem was also reported by Alex Bartok <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> (who has Ultra 60) [1] to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Morten Werner Olsen <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> said he had also same problem with his SparcStation LX [2]. I sent this report to debian-sparc, and he suggested me to send this bug report to BTS. Please fix it or teach me how to fix it if you know something about it. Bug#242338: Debian-Installer is working

I can't remember why ...) #3 715.5 MB ext3 / #5 115.1 MB swap #6 1.2 GB ext3 /home (I kept the original maintenance partition, and manually set up /boot, then let installer "automatically" partition the rest of the drive) Output of lspci: 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corp. 440FX - 82441FX PMC [Natoma] (rev 02) 00:0b.0 VGA compatible controller: Cirrus Logic GD 5446 00:0c.0 SCSI storage controller: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic 53c875 (rev 04) 00:0d.0 Ethernet controller: 3Com Corporation 3c905 100BaseTX [Boomerang] 00:10.0 Network controller: Compaq Computer Corporation Integrated NetFlex-3/P (rev 10) 00:14.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corp. 82371SB PIIX3 ISA [Natoma/Triton II] (rev 01) 00:14.1 IDE interface: Intel Corp. 82371SB PIIX3 IDE [Natoma/Triton II] Base System Installation Checklist: Initial boot worked:[O] Configure network HW: [O] Config network: [O] Detect CD: [ ] Load installer modules: [O] Detect hard drives: [E] Partition hard drives: [O] Create file systems:[O] Mount partitions: [O] Install base system:[O] Install boot loader:[O] Reboot: [O] [O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it Comments/Problems: can't find hard drive: When I choose "unstable", the installer never finds the hard drive. It looks like it is confused by the fact that I have no IDE hard drives (only a single SCSI hard drive). The following menus "Choose how to partition:" "Partition table overview" "Automatically partition a drive" don't do anything no matter what I select. The installer probably *should* stop and say "sorry, I can't see any hard drives" when it can't find a hard drive to install on, rather than continuing to try to "partition" a non-existent drive. Work-around: When I choose "testing", the installer seems to find the hard drive just fine, installing all of the base system without significant problems. little documentation nit-picks: The manual http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/en.i386/ch07s04.html is a little out of order -- "7.4.4. Configuring Your Mail Transport Agent" should come *after* "7.4.7. Prompts During Software Installation" to properly reflect the true installation sequence. The "Finish the installation and reboot" screen (and http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/en.i386/ch07s02.html ) mentions a "custom boot floppy", but I don't remember ever being given the option to create one during installation. Possibly unrelated problems: During installation, one of the other machines on my network (running another popular OS) popped up the message "IP address conflict" -- somehow the Debian machine got assigned exactly the same IP number. (I suspect that the problem is really inside my non-Debian DHCP server.) Dear Debian volunteer, Someone at http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/ asked me to send this to you. Hope that helps. I tried the new partman, and it works great. Wow, that's a lot of work! My only quibble is with the use of the term Wizard, as in "Use the Wizard to partition". I don't think wizard is a proper noun, so should not be capitalised, and I don't see how this is better than the old "Automatically partition". It assumes that the user is familiar with windows wizard-type things (and doesn't hate them ;-), and seems overly cute to me. -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Is it advisable to create a partman-yaboot, partman-prep, > partman-pegasos package, or a single partman-powerpc which will hold all > the above subarches ? I'd say it's best to separate them. The Apple_Bootstrap partition code you need for yaboot on powerpc is quite different from other powerpc subarches, even (judging from the yaboot-howto) other yaboot-using subarches. I propose "partman-newworld", since fdisk calls the partition "NewWorld bootblock". I'm working on it now. -- Colin Watson [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: Bug#239121: netcfg: Use default hostname from DHCP if one is received

Please see: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=236533 This bugreport is valid for both dhcp-client _and_ dhcp3-client. In the case of dhcp3-client I could only ping the new system using the FQDN _after_ adding the above line to /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf. This means that the hostname is not added dynamically in my DNS-server. In both cases the hostname can (should?) be unqualified. I have just tested with dhcp3-client by: - - making a clean install (i386 100MB netinst CD Apr 05) hostname: sauron - - apt-get install dhcp3-client (removes old dhcp-client) - - verified that this was 3.0.1rc13-1 - - /etc/init.d/networking restart - - ping sauron.fjphome.nl => 'unknown host' - - add 'send host-name "sauron";' to /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf - - /etc/init.d/networking restart - - ping sauron.fjphome.nl => ping OK (address returned from DNS-server) I have attached an extract from syslog from my DHCP/DNS-server (with comments). Bug#242321: debian-installer: Keyboard layout (de_CH) not used for generating XF86Config
Package: debian-installer Severity: wishlist Tags: l10n During installation, Debian installer asks about the keyboard layout to use. And that works fine. After installation, I really have that layout, but I always have to edit XF86Config-4 to replace "us" with my decision (which, in my case, is de_CH). -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.4.25-1-386 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". d-i: recreating MBR or boot floppy (rescue mode)
Hi! found the MBR overwriten by another OS. I thought I could test to recover with d-i, so I did. Installing grub or lilo needed to reenter the partition table, (which is ok) but I couldn't figure out how to write the MBR without newly installing the base-system. When selecting grub or lilo install it always called the base-system install first. It noticed the partition wasn't empty and rejecting to copy droped me back to the main menu. I could not find an option to generate a boot floppy to be able to recreate the MBR from the running system either. Is that intended, just not suported or did I just not figure out how it is supposed to be done? Regards, Christian -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#237779: #237779: /etc/hosts is wrong (with dhcp)
Unfortunately I have to confirm this. But I think it might not be a netcfg issue but rather the duty of the dhcp-client to make sure the network config is consistent as long the connection is under their supervision, and reverted back to original state when stoping the dhcp-client. In my case d-i beta3 used dhcp-client (v2). It should probably use dhcp3-client which now got a rewriten dhclient-script. It might already do the necessary updates to /etc/host or leave it just mentioning 127.0.0.1 localhost and change the /etc/host.conf and nsswitch to refer to the dns server before consulting the files. So this bug should probably reassigned to dhcp-client. (Or dhcp3-client, pump or dhcpcd respecively if they even have this problem at all.) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#239121: netcfg: Use default hostname from DHCP if one is received
I looked into this and around on the web. The observations I made where: The hostname and domain in DHCP can be treated in two ways, polling the hostname from the server or sending it so the DNS-server can be updated dynamically. It is ok to default the hostname to somthing like "debian" (or "none" (see below)) even when the hostname is set to be assigned from dhcp dynamically (in case the dhcp client does not get started) The hostname should not be set by netcfg to somthing that was received by dhcp at install time. But netcfg could have the option (checkbox like) to configure the dhcp client to dynamicaly change the hostname and domain to the one received from a dhcp server. The dhcp client needs to take care of changing hostname, domain, routes etc. and reverting them back to the previous state when shutting down the interface or releasing the lease. old dhcp-client (v2) seems rather depreceated (look at the old bugs) and not support this. But in fact, the newest dhcp3-client package (and udeb) (3.0.1rc13-1) seems to have a "more or less rewriten dhclient-script" and should now default to anounce any non-empty hostname to the dhcp server and set the hostname to the one received by dhcp if the localy resolved one is empty or "none" #165086 #151820 Easily configurable alternatives to the dhcp-client are dhcpcd (client deamon) or pump. Other distros use those successfully, and thats where I had seen a dhcp client.conf setting to use hostname=AUTO to have it retrieve it automatically, otherwise announce the chosen hostname to the dhcp server with the DHCPDISCOVER broadcast. A quick overwriting only example hack for the dhcp-client hooks (probably outdated by newer packages) http://lugwash.org/linux-users/200312/0127.html (see google cache if unavailable "debian hostname by dhcp") -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". This is fixed in libdebian-installer in subversion (probably, needs testing), but the upload of that package is blocked because of another change in it, which needs an upload of libc6 to avoid breaking the installer. I'm very close to backing out the other change in libdebian-installer and just uploading the RAID fix. There still appears to be a problem installing to a machine with a cciss card; mkinitrd will fail because the devfs name is not present on /target/dev. Also, if one creates a device node or symlink with the devfs name, and attempts the base system installation again, it will fail because /target/usr/bin/awk already exists. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". I tested this with d-i beta3, I can confirm it works for the non-dhcp case. /etc/hosts has a FQDN and the hostname as alias. Calling hostname --fqdn works ok. Location list proposal [was: why must Debian call Taiwan a "Province of China"?]
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 On Monday 05 April 2004 10:23, Christian Perrier wrote: > If someone has a better standards organisation for this issue, please > mention it. And, non, Microsoft is not the answer.:-) Someone mentioned looking at leading map makers (I think he mentioned the National Geographical Society). But... maps are often lagging behind a bit and have of course, especially in the past, been heavily influenced by political considerations in the past. (I am fairly sure a Chinese map won't show 'Taiwan' (and vice versa?) ;-) The NGS gives a list of 'COUNTRIES, U.S. STATES, CANADIAN PROVINCES AND TERRITORIES' on: http://plasma.nationalgeographic.com/mapmachine/countryprofiles.html Unfortunately Taiwan is not listed (Macedonia is), but it is mentioned separately if you click China (be it without politcal context): http://plasma.nationalgeographic.com/mapmachine/profiles/ch.html. I must say they are fairly up-to-date and politically correct as they mention 'muslim' as one of the religions in my country (the Netherlands, which is originally Christian). I know a lot of people here would like to ignore _that_ fact. I think the end conclusion has to be that _at the moment_ Taiwan is not internationally officially recognized as a separate country, but that of course does _not_ mean it can not be included in a list of 'locations' for Debian. I we want to go that way, I guess we should abandon the wish to conform to official naming and should go back to a somewhat arbitrary list of 'generally accepted short names' like KDE and MS seem to do. Probably based primarily on how important a location is to _us_ as a community and for making selections (language, keyboard, internationalization) during the installation process. There will probably always be people who will object to the inclusion of one name or an other, but as long as the title of the list is neutral (like 'location') and contains no 'statements' like 'occupied' or 'province of', I guess no one will go to war over it. Why don't we just trust to the conscience of the Debian community as a whole and allow the people who have been working on iso-3166 to draw up a proposal to be reviewed on this list? In case of disputes I would propose that the end decision should be made primarily by people _least_ involved in the issue. (For example: let Russians, Europeans, Africans and the people of Vanuatu decide about the conclusion of Taiwan as a separate entry and _not_ our friends living in China and on Taiwan). Peace, Frans Pop P.S. For Vanuatu, see: http://plasma.nationalgeographic.com/mapmachine/profiles/nh.html P.P.S. Another surprising list I found (although very likely to provoke a new flamewar) that could be used for reference, is the CIA's World Fact Book: http://www.odci.gov/cia/publications/factbook/index.html This has Vanuatu ;-) : http://www.odci.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/nh.html and has Taiwan tacked on to the bottom of the otherwise alphabetical list: http://www.odci.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/tw.html This list does not include Palestinian Territory, but both Ghaza Strip and West Bank _are_ present; and of course again the ugly but seemingly unavoidable "Macedonia, The Former Yugoslav Republic of". -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.2.1 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFAcZ9jgm/Kwh6ICoQRAhYkAKC5FNEmQFxx/+P9lZuEwDjg3nk8XwCdFxUN DJXilLQ1GzO6fZgZm7U5CBs= =CH3a -END PGP SIGNATURE-

[l10n] 2nd-stage splits into 2nd and 3rd stage!
Hey fellows, first, sorry for being a bit late... As some of you may have noticed already, dpkg, apt and aptitude are missing in the 2nd-stage stats: I'd like to announce a 3rd-stage-status for translation-status. Christian Perrier and I decided to do this to draw a better line between much important, important and less important packages during the d-installer. (I am talking of translations :) 3rd-stage Stats: http://people.debian.org/~seppy/d-i/3rd-stage/ Packages in 1st stage are packages used in debian-installer before rebooting. All packages after rebooting like base-config or shadow for choosing a password are called 2nd-stage. 2nd-stage packages prompt for input. 3rd stage packages do not prompt for input in the standard system like dpkg where of its 1000 strings are used for logging during installation. Overview about which package is in which stage: http://people.debian.org/~seppy/d-i/stages.txt For more/other information, see: http://people.debian.org/~seppy/d-i/translation-status.html http://people.debian.org/~seppy/d-i/3rd-stage/packages-list http://people.debian.org/~seppy/d-i/2nd-stage/packages-list have a nice week, Dennis -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". More facts about the TW issue (was: Re: Must debian-installer use iso-codes package when choosing country?)
Quoting Denis Barbier ([EMAIL PROTECTED]): > Please have a look at KDE (run kcontrol, select 'Regional & accessibility', > then 'Country/Region & Language'), they use real short names: Macedonia > and Taiwan in these particular cases. > Their list looks much smarter than the UN one. Well, "smarter" is a matter of perception, probably. The basic problem should be : "why KDE did choose these names instead of the only internationnally recognised (bad) ones". I *also* feel that "Taiwan" and "Macedonia" look more "natural". But I also feel I have any right at all for changing this if the only internationnalyrecognised standard use them Indeed, I found yesterday that the iso-3166 list and FAQ gives incorrect reasons for giving TW this controversial name. They mention that the name comes from the UN list of "country, regions and other areas for statistical use". They even point to the UN web site for this listwhere neither "Taiwan" nor "Taiwan, province of China" are listed! It indeed looks like ISO-3166 is a bit late after UN. The UN list probably included "TW=Taiwan, province of China" in the past. However, they currently DO NOT HAVE TW at all (probably a side effect of Taiwan not being anymore a member of UN since 1971). This point needs more investigation : if the reference ISO-3166 maintenance agency used is wrong, then the standard should change. I will try to find more information about a possible future change (which we could then anticipate). -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Re: partman-auto question: modifying recipes
On 5.IV.2004 at 15:56 Martin Michlmayr wrote: > > So virtual types like "palo" don't have to be added? I thought you'd > have to add them, too. Yes. partman-palo makes parted to think that palo partitions are linux-swap (an arbitrary choice). This is controlled in partman-palo/parted_names/palo. LVM partitions are also linux-swap. However at present partman-auto doesnt support palo partitions because at present there is no way to set the palo-flag for the palo partition (this is not difficult to be fixed).
