Uh? This patch add templates and we are now in the string freeze
process. In string freeze process, one of the things translators hate
is seeing their language being dropped at 99% while it was at 100%.

Most translators will consider their work done when their language
will reach 100% and will maybe leave or maybe give less attention to
changes. So, commiting this now is a bit hard for them.

Well, indeed one of your scripts still grabbed Denis Barbier
rank.txt. I updated it and it now grabs your file...which probably
does not have quik-installer statistics

Communications Research to Initiate Marketing of TeleWRITER at Upcoming InfoComm
Conference

Reasons to own CRHI

TeleWRITER has not been upgraded for over 5 years but nonetheless still commands
a very loyal following. Communications Research acquired the software 2 years
ago and will have its upgrade completed just in time for InfoComm. Beta testing
will begin almost immediately and sales are expected to kick off in October.
TeleWRITER sales will add considerably and immediately to the company's bottom
line. CRHI's Systems Integration division is also performing above expectations
and they have recently hired a number of contract employees to assist the
company on fulfillment.

InfoComm is a key industry event and provides the perfect platform for the
company to springboard its TeleWRITER 3.0 upgrade. It is the nation's largest
business-to-business industry tradeshow for pro-AV communications systems.

At its peak, TeleWRITER-AGS had approximately a 60% share of the collaborative
computing market in the mid-1990's, but the prior owners failed to fully
maintain product due to private personal circumstances. CRHI acquired the
technology and is near completion of the upgrades necessary to make the product
operational with virtually all current software platforms. The market has
exceeded industry expectations over the years and currently has well over $3
billion in annual revenues and growing.

Communications Research to Initiate Marketing of TeleWRITER at Upcoming InfoComm
Conference
---

MAHWAH, N.J., May 18, 2004 (PRIMEZONE via COMTEX) -- Communications Research,
Inc. (CRHI) announced that it will begin marketing TeleWRITER 3.0, the upgraded
version of the TeleWRITER product line, at InfoComm June 9-11, 2004 in Atlanta,
Georgia. TeleWRITER is a premier product in the collaborative computing market,
which is pegged at in excess of $3 billion this year.

"We have been receiving numerous requests for the upgrade and are on the verge
of being able to supply the pent-up demand for our product," remarked
Communications Research CEO Carl Ceragno. "InfoComm affords us the opportunity
of a huge industry event at which to make a big splash and to let the industry
know we're back with a vengeance. TeleWRITER's feature rich software, low price
point and ease of interoperability should make it a huge hit in the burgeoning
distant learning and tele-commuting markets. We anticipate quickly re-capturing
former clients and rapidly developing new sales to catapult the company."

Hmmm, the problem is that exim is maintained by Andreas Metzler who
probably used his own translations, which may be not consistent with
the usual translations of the german l10n team.

We often have the same "problem" with french DD's...:-)

Why do we have no languages at 100% in 1st stage in the general page
while rank.txt in ~seppy/d-i/1st-stage has 9 complete languages?

I suspect you removed the brand new quik-installer from the statistics
in the meantime. Am I wrong?

It'd be dumb to not build from Debian kernel-source, all the current SPARC
kernels in the archive were built against kernel-source-2.4.26 :)

So then this problem is completely moot, right?

Package: yaboot
Version: 1.3.11-1
Severity: normal

I'm trying to install using the latest and greatest netinst installer
from the daily builds. I'm installing on an 800Mhz G3 iBook. Everything
goes fairly smoothly during the install, although one has to ^C various
things during the process to get back to the main installer menu. (I've
got a few notes if anyone wants them.)

I've installed 3 times and have experienced the same problem each time.
Yaboot cannot see the vmlinux link to the installed kernel. My partition
table is like this:

#9 bootstrap
#10 /boot
#11 swap
#12 /

vmlinux is on 12, pointing to the powerpc image on 10. yaboot.conf seems
fine, but when I tried to run ybin from /target I wasn't clever enough
to work out all the paths etc.

The error from yaboot 1.3.11:
/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/[EMAIL PROTECTED]:12,/vmlinux:
No such file or directory

Installer info:
Sarge - Official NetInst Snapshot powerpic Binary-1 (20040330)

BTW this is only so if you're using the vanilla 2.4 kernel-source. If
you're using the Debian kernel-source package then it should be fine.

In that case please recompile your kernel without cramfs. Otherwise
it'll destroy anything that doesn't use 8K blocks.

You can turn it back on in 2.6 as cramfs there doesn't change block
sizes anymore.

In all cases, you still need to make sure that the block size of
your ext2 filesystem matches that of the the RAM disk driver.

Comments/Problems:
The installer detected eth0 as the motherboard ethernet card and eth1
as the airwire card. I was able to connect to the internet through the
airwire card, but the installer didn't write out an
/etc/network/interfaces block for eth1.

After the installer was finished and rebooted the machine, it didn't
boot to a linux boot loader- it booted directly to OSX. I was able to
boot linux by holding down the "option" key during the boot and
selecting the linux partition from the menu, and finished installing
the boot loader by running "ybin".

The other thing I noticed is that there is no "sbp2" module in the
kernel, which means I am not able to access my external firewire disks
from linux... however the "dmesg" messages show something having to do
with "connecting to sbp2 device" with the GUID of the disk, which makes
me guess that the sbp2 module is compiled into the kernel itself. is
there some secret to accessing this disk? i've tried adding the various
ieee1394 modules which ARE available, without any success.

It's in debian/templates-arch. I've made the change in rootskel 0.76,
not yet released.

Well, not quite "over the weekend", but I've checked it in now in
packages/arch/powerpc/quik-installer. You'll need to build images
containing it yourself.

I think it's probably far too late in the release process to be worrying
about collecting OpenFirmware settings; I'd just like this to work at
all for anyone.

My apologies to translators for this coming a couple of hours late for
the string freeze. I tried to sweeten the pill by seeding the
translations with those from yaboot-installer, which should be a good
start. Still, if it doesn't make it then I guess it doesn't make it.

Cheers,

It is compiled in, of course.

You say that I should use the page size as the block size. However, on
sparc64 this is 8192, and ext2 blocks only work in 1, 2, and 4 K blocks.

Should I assume 4096 is ok for these? Testers are at a premium, I'd like
to see if I can get it right the first time.

This could be related to the fact that CDs only work on sparc32 right now.
Or maybe not: BLOCKSIZE is by default 1024 for genext2fs.

I might try cramfs if this does not work out. I've recently enabled these
options as 'y' for sparc kernels across the board.

* Problem 1
In the first try, I used the following options (as exemplified in key menu):

Then I got:

Kernel panic: Too many boot env vars at 'netcfg/use_dhcp=false'

So in the second try, I left out the 'hw-detect/start_pcmcia=false' option, and it
worked.

* Problem 2

I wanted to use LVM. In the "partitioning" configuration, I asked that
  /dev/hdc2
  /dev/hdc6
should be used as physical devices for LVM. But when I selected "Configure LVM", I got

LVM not available. You should load the lvm-mod module.

But I could not find it from the "components to load from the CD".

* Problem 3a
I asked that GRUB be installed on (hd1).
But on booting from that disk, the screen was endlessly filled with

* Problem 3b
[Note: In the partitioning, I had asked to reuse (no formatting!) my
existing /boot partition (/dev/hda5).]
Because of 3a, I booted from (hd0), as usual, to be surprised that my
'menu.lst' had been modified to contain the wrong 'root' boot option
for the existing kernels:

  root=/dev/hdc8

was added to all, including where before it was

  root=/dev/hda15

I would think that existing entries in 'menu.lst' should not be changed!

* Problem 4
The "Configure timezone" menu item doesn't work: when selcting it, the
menu flickers, but nothing more happens.

Installation reports - a naive question

2004-05-19 Thread Clive Menzies
Hi All

Apologies for asking a really dumb question but I'm trying to make a
contribution to Debian by submitting an installation report. I've
successfully installed on a G4 using the beta 4 installer. I've looked
at other reports and searched the debian site to see how to submit a
report but can't find a pro-forma report to use.

Can someone point me to an "idiots guide" to submitting an installation
report? Do I use reportbug or what? As you may have guessed, I'm
pretty new to all this and I would like to help without it taking me
days to fathom out ;)

Regards

Clive

Hey translators,

1st-stage translation status pages moved to
http://people.debian.org/~seppy/d-i/1st-stage/
(updated every 4h)

The "old" pages at
http://people.debian.org/~barbier/d-i/l10n/

I was just told, that pcmcia-cs is now developed in SVN:
  svn co svn://svn.debian.org/pkg-pcmcia-cs/pcmcia-cs/trunk pcmcia-cs
2nd-stage status already uses SVN.

Argh. :-)
Thanks for your effort, but I have done the very same work just ATM.
Btw, your patch still uses $defaultbootdev instead of $bootdev, and
i also use a different mapping method for devfs device names now, so
I prefer to apply mine.

Please test it once it is committed.

these two sentences are different parts of translations. I changed both

Ihrem Land nach ist Ihre Zeitzone vermutlich ${zone}.
Befinden Sie sich wirklich in der Zeitzone ${zone}?

> So, is there any way this could be done automatically? ie. can we

Unfortunately, there's no other way I'm aware of - the kernel has calls
to edit the PROM variables, but it seems that no one's written a tool
(or /proc interface, or whatever) that actually uses them. Debconf
notes still appear to be the best available solution

As I'd mentioned, my earlier patch was broken - I'd misunderstood some
of debconf's workings. The following patch works properly when tested
as a standalone, though I haven't yet tested a full installation run
with it in place.

I decided to test the businesscard ISO image in hopes of being able to
take advantage of the automatic kernel selection present in that
version. Using the 20040517 businesscard ISO image:

http://cdimage.debian.org/pub/cdimage-testing/daily/i386/20040517/sarge-i386-businesscard.iso

I was only able to select a mirror from the provided list. I want
to be able to enter the URL of my local mirror to install from there
instead.

I don't see any obvious way to do this either on the system (even with
debconf priority low) or in the installation manual.

For now, I'm going to go back to using the netinst install (since I
can switch to a local mirror easily once I'm in base config), but this
means I won't get the ability to choose a kernel and will end up with
a non-SMP 386 kernel.

Bug#246327: Done and more info?

2004-05-19 Thread Nathan Tallent
Hi,

I hope I was not misunderstood. I did not mean that 'menu.lst' currently
contains the literal string "(hd0,*)" and that I'm currently having boot
problems. (I've already spent a lot of time fixing them!)

I was sending an update about a strange discrepancy between
debian-installer's interpretation of hd0/hd1 and Grub's, at least after
using BIOS to boot from the second drive. In this context Grub interprets
hd0 to mean disk2. In contrast, when using d-i, one had better put Grub on
hd1 (disk2) because hd0 (the default)will clobber the MBR of disk0.

I was also sending an update about the default kernel on d-i (2.4.25, I
think) and its recognition of my disks (hda, hde) in contrast to 2.6.5 (sda,
sdb). Scott had previously asked me to send Grub's 'device.map'. (These
differences also meant that I had to change Grub's root device for booting
2.6.5. Since /dev/hde5 was the default root, I encountered a lot of fatal
kernel panics before I figured out root had to be /dev/sdb5.)

However, thanks for the response.

-Nathan.

When using beta4 CD image for i386 with 'linux26', 2nd stage screen
may be broken if you choose a language needs framebuffer (such as
Japanese).

This is because vga16fb driver of linux kernel 2.6.3 (in testing) is
broken, so will be resolved by entering newer kernel to testing.

For VMware users, you can use vesa driver instead of vga16 driver by
passing kernel parameter 'vga=785' at grub menu.

Thanks,

I am experiencing the very same problem with my Ultra5, and it still
happens even with the latest daily
(
http://cdimage.debian.org/pub/cdimage-testing/sarge_d-i/sparc/20040519/sarge-sparc-netinst.iso
 )

I have tried "linux root=/dev/rd/0 devfs=mount rw" and a few other boot
parameters, but nothing seems to help.

Has anyone actually had any success with booting sarge d-i on a Ultra5
or Ultra10?

The first menu entry in country mirrors selection let you enter a custom
debian mirror, I tried that with my local apt-proxy and worked great, if only
I can found where to patch to let this default to my location in the svn
sources will be easy to produce custom pxe netboot install images that I
need so much!

Try that ! In the above cited menu entry enter "APTPROXY:" and
then /debian/ (the default) and again enter for the www proxy if u don't use
it. APTPROXY is the hostname if your local dns works or ip of the mirror.

Happy pxeboot debian installing!

Detection of LVM under 2.6 is broken, but it's fixed in the version of
unstable.

The version in unstable uses lvm2. If you want to try the
http://gluck.debian.org/cdimage/testing/sid_d-i/ images and provide
feedback, I'd appreciate it. Otherwise you'll have to wait for beta5.

Comments/Problems:
I want to reinstall Debian Sarge, using all my diskspace.
For partitioning I want to use LVM.
I choosed to load LVM-Module, but I supose, it didn't. In Partmon I made
one Partition on my drive and created a physicalvolume for LVM with it.
After that I want to config LVM, it writes the changes of partitioning
on the drive. Here it gives the message" Der gegenwärtig laufende Kernel
unterstützt LVM nicht.
Möglicherweise müssen Sie erst das lvm-mod laden."
When I want to leave the partitioning menu, it tells me, that I didn't
create a root-filesystem. But how should I?
On a console 'modprobe dm-mod' works, but 'modprobe lvm-mod' gives out
"FATAL Module lvm_mod not found".

I suppose, lvm of the installer is lvm10. Is there a possibility to
install with lvm2?

No, it should not. Modules should be autoloaded by modprobe and/or
detect/hotplug.

Dialup cannot be supported by the current ppp-udeb package (it lacks at
least a chat binary) and I don't believe supporting a full dialup
netinstall is worth the effort, users probably want to install base
anyway from the 120 MB CD image.

It cannot be supported, all non-ethernet modems need a firmware.

Cannot be supported, we are not using rp-pppoe.

Anyway, currently ppp-udeb should support PPPoE netinstall, but it has
not been tested and I do not know when joeyh plans to integrate the
package.
Either it goes in, or the kernel ppp modules package is removed.

I think that something like 100Mb (maybe a little less) should allow
installing more than one kernel in the future life of the
machine. Anyway, raising the lower limit, if there is one, is
mandatory.

This fixes the Norwegian locale changing from no_NO to nb_NO (FWIW, this bug
was already in beta4). Thanks, Petter, for pointing it to me.

I tried as many languagechooser+countrychooser choices as
possible. We're only left with one glitch when choosing for instance
English, then Brazil-->the locale then becomes "en" alone, which is
invalid. This happens for each combination of language+"other"
country, "other" being chosen from the long country list.

Solving this would require having a default "country" part for each
language which basically requires a new field in
languagechooser/languagelist and change languagemap accordingly.

Such changes are too invasive for making it for rc1.

I just succeeded in building a dual-bootable i386/powerpc image. It's
just a combination of the i386 and powerpc netinst beta4 images and some
manual hacking in the Release file. You can find the image and the
script I used to burn the image on

http://www.soziologie.ch/~steinlin/d-i/netinst-ppc-i386/

This probably needs some more testing, to be sure it is really bootable
on the majority of i386 and powerpc hardware.

If you are still interested in dual-boot images for LinuxTag I will try
to automate and improve this process.

You need to exclude irq 9 in /etc/pcmcia/config.opts. Yes, there
should be an easy way to do this in the installer, I'm working on it.

DHCP configuration lead to an error because the dhcp-client-udeb wasn't installed. I
suspect this is related to #249355

Partman does not display filesystem types and mount points. #249485

Kernel did not install. Looking at console 3, it appeared as a file
system full problem. This seems related to a bad recipe for
"Multi-user system" in partman-auto. The root filesystem on a 1Gb hard
disk is 30Mb which is now too small for installing the kernel

Hi,
I have a Toshiba Satellite 1690CDT and I've had so many troubles with a
PCMCIA Digicom Palladio Dongless ethernet card.
To get it working with Woody it took me a long time.
I tried almost every version of the installer so far at sometimes it was
properly detected and installed and sometimes not; beta4 does not detect
it.
After the installer told me it couldn't detect an ethernet card I just
unplugged it, re-plugged in and asked the installer to detect it It
worked.

I hope it works for you too.
