There are already people with commit access in the -l10n-spanish team. I prefer receiving a confirmation that coordination with them has been established so that translation consistency and quality procedures are still applied. Folks from the -l10n-spanish, can you please confirm? Lucas, spanish is currently 100% translated in core d-i, so what is needed for commiting (of course, there are a lot of valid reasons anyway, such as proofreading and error corrections)? Don't see this as a attempt to "close" the l10n processbut rather keep a good team work. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? This is indeed a bug, or a missing feature, in GRUB. AFAIK, the only way for having a kind of "category title" is by using a fake entry which does nothing. I think we can safely assign this to the grub package, as a wishlist bug for "Please allow for a title entry in menu.lst". GRUB maintainer(s), comments? Of course, if grub-installer misuses menu.lst and such possibility already exists, please reassign the bug to grub-installer. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". My table was: 1: 50MB ext2 /boot 2: 1GB swap none 3: 18.9GB ext3 / From a previous installation of Linux, and I wanted to change it to the above: 1: 50MB ext2 /boot 2: 1GB swap none 3: 10GB reiserfs / So, i went into the 3rd partition and tried repeatedly to change the size from 18.9 GB to 10 GB unsucessfully. It would ask me to confirm, and I would confirm and it would return and show the size as 18.9 GB again. I had to escape out of the parition definitions, run fdisk on tty2 to delete partition 3, and renter again on tty1 where it then worked flawlessly. Keep up the great work all! STB Velocity 128
I am trying to get XServer to start using the correct video driver. I know that I have a STB Velocity 128 video card with a RIVA128 chipset in my Dell Dimension XPS R450 system. It is older than December 2001. So it is not using any newer drivers. I have run xf86config numerous times and loaded the STB Velocity 128 driver many times. I have found and tried many different hor and vertical synch rates. I have tried loading the generic VGA driver and then run startx. Crash. Can someone possibly assist me in getting my video driver working? I attached my log file for the crash. april This is a pre-release version of XFree86, and is not supported in any way. Re: Usablity: network configuration on machine without a network card (beta4 and tc1)
Thank you both. In fact, I followed both suggestions, as there are 2 distinct issues: 1) ethdetect endless loop: it was already reported, I added comment to bug #253402 2) netcfg handling of the situation when there is no network card: I added comment to bug #243543 See U, Baptiste -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Mounting file system on new partition fails
Hello, I am sorry to trouble you with my difficulties, however, I feel that my ability to self-help has run out. I am installing Sarge on a drive which is half Windows XP and half free space. Sarge has no problems detecting my hard drive or existing partitions. I select for the partition manager to automatically partition the free space according to the default settings, "All files in one partition". After the partition is created, I get the following error message: "The attempt to moutn a file system with type ext3 in IDE2 master partition #2 (hdc2) at / failed." I haven't been able to find any similar experiences documented anywhere. I have tried tweaking the partition options with no success. Thank you in advance, Brad -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Since d-i did not offer PCMCIA card service (ISA) during install but installs pcmcia-cs package, after reboot I was left with empty /etc/network/interface and /etc/apt/sources.list. PCMCIA/NET : I do not care to configure network automatically during the first boot process (it is nice though), but having some dialogue to set network skelton (DHCP vs. FIXED IP) and run apt-setup will be nice. (Skelton is a template file copied from /u/s/d/ifupdown/examples/*) Just having extra entry for network cards and some simple hack is all it needed. The supported network cards seem to assum

Installation is rendered impossible. The Short Version: PS/2 Keyboard stops functioning immediately after insertion of usb-uhci.o PS/2 Keyboard stops functioning with or without any USB devices installed. PS/2 Keyboard continues functioning with usb-ehci.o inserted. PS/2 Keyboard stops functioning with or without framebuffer. PS/2 Keyboard functions normally under RedHat [2.4.18][this is probably apples vs. oranges] with usb-uhci.o inserted. Troubleshooting (aka, the long version): When I boot from the sarge netinst CD image daily 03/29 or 04/08, the keyboard locks at the first screen [choose your lang].. booting init=/bin/sh works, and invoking usb-discover locks the keyboard. modprobing /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/usb/host/usb-uhci.o works, the module when inserts without error, BUT the keyboard is then non-functional. While PS/2 keyboard input is impossible, inserting/removing a usb mouse does result in expected USB kernel messages. So machine is not locked. In short: Machine currently has RedHat 8 on it. [i know this is apples and oranges, but] usb-uhci and usb-ehci both seem to work fine. Machine is equipped with both UHCI and EHCI controllers, the output of lspci [when invoked under redhat, for informational purposes] is as follows: lspci -n 00:00.0 Class 0600: 8086:2530 (rev 04) 00:01.0 Class 0604: 8086:2532 (rev 04) 00:1e.0 Class 0604: 8086:244e (rev 04) 00:1f.0 Class 0601: 8086:2440 (rev 04) 00:1f.1 Class 0101: 8086:244b (rev 04) 00:1f.3 Class 0c05: 8086:2443 (rev 04) 00:1f.5 Class 0401: 8086:2445 (rev 04) 01:00.0 Class 0300: 10de:0258 (rev a3) 02:01.0 Class 0c03: 1106:3038 (rev 50) 02:01.1 Class 0c03: 1106:3038 (rev 50) 02:01.2 Class 0c03: 1106:3104 (rev 51) 02:02.0 Class 0c03: 1106:3038 (rev 50) 02:02.1 Class 0c03: 1106:3038 (rev 50) 02:02.2 Class 0c03: 1106:3104 (rev 51) 02:0c.0 Class 0200: 8086:100e (rev 02) (END) and: lspci -v 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corp. 82850 850 (Tehama) Chipset Host Bridge (MCH) (r ev 04) Subsystem: Dell Computer Corporation: Unknown device 0144 Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0 Memory at e000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=128M] Capabilities: [a0] AGP version 2.0 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corp. 82850 850 (Tehama) Chipset AGP Bridge (rev 04) ( prog-if 00 [Normal decode]) Flags: bus master, 66Mhz, fast devsel, latency 64 Bus: primary=00, secondary=01, subordinate=01, sec-latency=64 Memory behind bridge: fc00-fdff Prefetchable memory behind bridge: e800-f7ff 00:1e

Bug#254735: PXE/netboot installation: success
Package: installation-reports Version: TC1 Triggered by a question on #debian-boot and my own curiosity, I decided to try and netboot d-i for my Toshiba Satellite A40 laptop using PXE booting. Here's how I did it. The documentation (d-i manual) is not quite correct, but the solutions were fairly easy after combining info from several places I'll update the relevant parts of the manual. Preparing the server I already had dhcp3-server installed on a Woody server in my network. - installed packages atftpd (tftpd does not work!) installing atftpd with all options default works - installed package syslinux only one file from this package is needed; I purged it after copying that - create directory /tftpboot (world readable, contents also) - cp /usr/lib/syslinux/pxelinux.0 /tftpboot - wget netboot files (initrd.gz, mini.iso, vmlinuz) into /tftpboot I downloaded the TC1 version - create file 'default' in new directory /tftpboot/pxelinux.cfg/ (see below) - edit /etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf (see below) - boot laptop => d-i starts :-) That's all! First installation test === The installation using only default options (getting both d-i modules and base system from the network) went perfectly. Second installation test I next set up netboot to start d-i at medium priority (nice :-). I selected cdrom-detect as an extra installer module to load, because I wanted to see if I could install the base-system from CD-ROM. So I selected 'Detect and mount CD-ROM' after 'Load installer components'. After I selected 'Install the base system' it started installation off the CD-ROM automatically :-). Note: netboot d-i and the CD have to be compatible; combining TC1 netboot with sid_d-i CD-ROM results in 'Debbootstrap error: Couldn't download libdb2'. After switching the CD to the TC1 version, everything worked perfectly again. /tftpboot/pxelinux.cfg/default (last two lines actually on same line) == LABEL linux KERNEL vmlinuz APPEND load initrd=initrd.gz ramdisk_size=8192 devfs=mount root=/dev/ram \ DEBCONF_PRIORITY=medium Not sure if the 'load' option is necessary... Addition to /etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf (can probably be improved a bit) = host tftpserver { fixed-address 10.x.x.x; hardware ethernet AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF; } host pxeclient { hardware ethernet UU:VV:WW:XX:YY:ZZ; fixed-address 10.x.x.y; option host-name "pxeclient"; filename "/tftpboot/pxelinux.0"; next-server tftpserver; } Cheers, FJP -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". I still wanted to use the space after it, so I created a swap partition in that space and let the installer try it again. But it made a second swap partition! That's why I'm not really happy with it... --- The bootloader installed well, but it didn't include Windows NT on my first disk (not that I use it very often... :) ). I had to do this manually. Maybe this is because I had LILO before I started with the installation, which resided before the WinNT bootloader, so that the installer couldn't recognize it. --- I hope this is useful. RE: [SOLVED] Take 3: sparc64 CDs work?
Well, it certainly used to be the case on Ye Olde SPARCs (talking IPX and +1's here) that the size of kernel and/or initrd you could boot from depended on the size of the first two memory modules in the machine and it was therefore essential to have the two largest modules at the beginning of the memory map. I have no idea if this is still the case on the SPARC64 architecture but it would be my first guess as to why this fixed your problem. Bug#253402: Deadlock with no ethernet card
Hello, Same here with tc1. I get presented successively with the following templates: 1) choice of modules: I choose "none of the above" 2) do I have a driver floppy ? I answer "no" 3) an error template that informs me no hardware was found. From there I go back to 1), the only way to break the deadlock is to press the ESC key. After pressing the ESC key, no error seems to be raised, and the installer goes on to netcfg (which complains). I looked into the code, a while loop is used, which has no way to break out without a working interface, except if you have no drivers at all. I don't think this loop serves any essential purpose. ethdetect sould not try that hard to get an interface, because it is perfectly acceptable that the computer has no ethernet card (or an unsupported one). In my opinion, it should just warn, and go on. What happens next is netcfg's problem (see bug #243543 for my opinion on that matter). Bug#243543: no /etc/network/interfaces on a machine without network card
On May 23, 2004 13:19, Joshua Kwan wrote: I think it will just crap out and moan that it has no interfaces. :( Basically, we need some sort of heuristic to crap out conditionally, by determining whether the boot media contains enough pkgs to complete the install, or halt the installation right there because it would be impossible. Indeed, it does crap out ! More precisely, it displays a red error template (netcfg/no-interfaces, this is in netcfg-common.c) explaining the problem, with 2 buttons: Go Back and Continue, but this choice is not taken into account. Whatever the choice, it then returns with an error code (return code 10, this is in the main routine of netcfg.c), which leads to another error template ("an installation step failed"), before I can access the main menu. No configuration whatsoever is done. Apart from the obvious UI problem, I think netcfg should try harder to limit the damage, which means at least writing the generic part of the config files. The reason for that is, it is much easier to add a few driver debs afterwards, than to find out which correction is needed to which config file. It may be that people with unsupported ethernet cards need to edit /etc/network/interfaces anyway, but DSL is more and more common these days. In my personnal case, I use a USB DSL modem, based on the Eagle chipset, so I just need to download 3 .deb packages (eagle-usb-utils, eagle-usb-data, and eagle-usb-modules for the running kernel). I then install them on tty2 at the beginning of 2nd stage, and I can access the debian archive. This is much easier for a new user (and even an experienced one...) than go edit the congif files ! I thought to myself that I was probably doing something wrong since working with initrd and building sparc isos is all new to me, so I just gave up after a dusin tries or so. Then today (don't know why this idea came to me) I decided to open up the box and juggle around with the memory sticks. And voila! Moving the two sticks from DIMM3 and DIMM4 to DIMM1 and DIMM2 made the initrd issue go away (booted with default SILO parameters). Hello Matt, I guess so, I have made a tar of my scripts available at: http://home.tiscali.nl/isildur/d-i/manual-build-scripts.tar.gz I run the build-manual script from cron in a chroot. This does all the hard work and calls translation-stats and create-index. After build-manual has finished, I run mail-logs outside the chroot (otherwise the mails would end up in a black hole ;-). The script you want is create-index. You'll have to remove the translation statistics stuff. The page is build using a fixed header and footer with the middle part containing the links added by the script. The script depends on 'maillist' and 'archlist'. I think it would be best to add these to doc/manual/build/ in SVN so you can use them and also modify the existing build.sh to use these files. Let me know if you think that's a good idea and I'll do that. Some thoughts/comments/questions The manual currently is far from ready. Still a lot of stuff is more Woody oriented than applicable to Sarge. Only 4 translations are currently complete (well, almost). Is it really advisable to publish this on the main website yet? Maybe a general page with a lot of disclaimers and a link to the project page is more logical ATM. I don't think it's useful to publish the same stuff in two places: - - will you also build from SVN? - - how often? - - all languages/architectures or only those that are more or less complete? Maybe an option would be for me to do daily builds for all languages - maybe all archs for 'en' and only i386 for translations - (for the benefit of writers and translators). Other archs could be temporarily added on request if someone plans to do some heavy arch specific editing. Once the manual gets more up to date, we could think of creating a development version and periodically tag a version as 'stable' (with up to date translations) for publication on the main site. As the index page for the main website will be auto generated, how will you support translations of that page?
