Then this needs to be documented in the installation manual (or
somewhere else), right?

There are already people with commit access in the -l10n-spanish
team. I prefer receiving a confirmation that coordination with them
has been established so that translation consistency and quality
procedures are still applied.

Folks from the -l10n-spanish, can you please confirm?

Lucas, spanish is currently 100% translated in core d-i, so what is
needed for commiting (of course, there are a lot of valid reasons
anyway, such as proofreading and error corrections)?

Don't see this as a attempt to "close" the l10n processbut rather
keep a good team work.

This is indeed a bug, or a missing feature, in GRUB. AFAIK, the only
way for having a kind of "category title" is by using a fake entry
which does nothing.

I think we can safely assign this to the grub package, as a wishlist
bug for "Please allow for a title entry in menu.lst".

GRUB maintainer(s), comments?

Of course, if grub-installer misuses menu.lst and such possibility
already exists, please reassign the bug to grub-installer.

Hmmm. Acoording to this line in your log:
(--) PCI:*(1:0:0) NVidia/SGS-Thomson Riva128 rev 33
this isn't a STB Velocity 128 card, but a NVidia video card.

According to [1] you need the 'nv' driver.

Comments/Problems:
The only error I encoutered was in _changing_ an existing partition
table.

My table was:
1: 50MB ext2 /boot
2: 1GB swap none
3: 18.9GB ext3 /

From a previous installation of Linux, and I wanted to change it to the
above:

1: 50MB ext2 /boot
2: 1GB swap none
3: 10GB reiserfs /

So, i went into the 3rd partition and tried repeatedly to change the
size from 18.9 GB to 10 GB unsucessfully. It would ask me to confirm,
and I would confirm and it would return and show the size as 18.9 GB
again. I had to escape out of the parition definitions, run fdisk on
tty2 to delete partition 3, and renter again on tty1 where it then
worked flawlessly.

Keep up the great work all!

Thanks,
David Rasch

STB Velocity 128

2004-06-16 Thread April M. Merryman
I am trying to get XServer to start using the correct video driver. I
know that I have a STB Velocity 128 video card with a RIVA128 chipset in
my Dell Dimension XPS R450 system. It is older than December 2001. So it
is not using any newer drivers.

I have run xf86config numerous times and loaded the STB Velocity 128
driver many times. I have found and tried many different hor and vertical
synch rates. I have tried loading the generic VGA driver and then run
startx. Crash.

Can someone possibly assist me in getting my video driver working? I
attached my log file for the crash.

april

Thank you both.
In fact, I followed both suggestions, as there are 2 distinct issues:
1) ethdetect endless loop: it was already reported, I added comment to
bug #253402
2) netcfg handling of the situation when there is no network card: I
added comment to bug #243543

Are there any errors shown on VT3 or VT4 (you can switch to those using Alt-F3
and Alt-F4; then switch bach to the installer using Alt-F1)?

They could help us tell why the mount fails.

Can you switch to the third console with alt-f3 and see if there's an
error message? Maybe try alt-f4 too.

Mounting file system on new partition fails

2004-06-16 Thread Brad Lipovsky
Hello, I am sorry to trouble you with my difficulties, however, I feel
that my ability to self-help has run out. I am installing Sarge on a
drive which is half Windows XP and half free space. Sarge has no
problems detecting my hard drive or existing partitions. I select for
the partition manager to automatically partition the free space
according to the default settings, "All files in one partition". After
the partition is created, I get the following error message:

"The attempt to moutn a file system with type ext3 in IDE2 master
partition #2 (hdc2) at / failed."

I haven't been able to find any similar experiences documented
anywhere. I have tried tweaking the partition options with no success.

Thank you in advance,
Brad

(This install tries onto a machine which I had a hard time installing
other distro and OSs. The same CD as one used for #248110, so it is
 known good CD image.)

Debian-installer-version: sarge-i386-netinst.iso Beta-4
uname -a: 2.4.25-1-386 #2 . i686
Method: Tried expert mode

Machine: Dell Latitude CPi
Processor: P2
Memory: 256MB
Root Device: / = hda3 (5G), /boot = hda1 (0.5G), swap = hda2 (0.5G)

Conclusion: With minor gliches, d-i install was success.

Key hardware issues:
 * CD-ROM has slow spin-up (Also this could not read CD-RW as boot media)
 * This is equipped with ISA(CS) based PCMCIA network card but d-i did
not offer easy access of PCMCIA cards during initial boot process.

Base System Installation Checklist: (with 2.4 kernel: expert)
Initial boot worked:[O] (No fancy graphic boot screen)
Configure network HW: [E]
Config network: [O]
Detect CD: [E] (Manually mounted)
Load installer modules: [O]
Detect hard drives: [O]
Partition hard drives: [O] (Used manual partition)
Create file systems:[O]
Mount partitions: [O]
Install base system:[O]
Install boot loader:[O]
Reboot: [O]
[O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it

Note:
Thanks to TAB-capable d-i shell, it was not too difficult to type
ide-cdrom file location to mount it to /cdrom. (unlike normal
/dev/cdrom/cdrom1 mounted to /cdrom, I ended up mounting
/dev/ide-the-long-devfs-name to /cdrom).

Since d-i did not offer PCMCIA card service (ISA) during install but
installs pcmcia-cs package, after reboot I was left with empty
/etc/network/interface and /etc/apt/sources.list.

They were manually created with vi and apt-setup.

Comment for improvement:
*** CD :
If mounting fails, second trial should have option to do mounting
slower. (It looked to me some auto-mounter is used.)

Slowing timeout of mounting process may be what is needed. This may be
the feature to accommodate more hardwares. (Did I miss some boot
parameters? If so, excuse me.)

Also "verify CD" dialogue (which of course failed this time) needs to
have some way to mount slowly too.

 PCMCIA/NET :
I do not care to configure network automatically during the first boot
process (it is nice though), but having some dialogue to set network
skelton (DHCP vs. FIXED IP) and run apt-setup will be nice. (Skelton is
a template file copied from /u/s/d/ifupdown/examples/*)

Just having extra entry for network cards and some simple hack is all
it needed.

The supported network cards seem to assum

Bug#254754: Grub added a "Other operating systems" entry, that does nothing.

2004-06-16 Thread Margarita Manterola

Package: installation-reports
Severity: minor

When installing Grub with the new debian-installer in a machine that
already has some windows installed, grubs adds a "Other operating
systems" option, and then the "Windows 98/..." option.

The "Other operating systems" doesn't actually do anything, but it can
be really confusing, since you can press on it, and nothing happens.

This bug has been fixed in aboot-installer 0.0.10 (and further fixes
have been made in 0.0.11, which will be uploaded soon).

> Is it really so that aboot can't boot from ext3 partition?

I don't know for sure. I believe it *should* be able to boot from an
ext3 partition, but aboot-installer is being conservative (in this, if
in nothing else) until I have a chance to test it. This will happen
after 0.0.11 makes it into the sarge daily images.

Bug#254743: Package: installation-reports

Package: installation-reports

http://cdimage.debian.org/pub/cdimage-testing/sarge_d-i/alpha/tc1/sarge-alpha-netinst.iso

uname -a: Linux aapeli 2.4.25-1-generic #2 Wed Apr 14 19:38:35 EST 2004
alpha unknown
Date: 16.6.2004
Method: Booted from CDROM, using serial console (video card doesn't seem
to work out of the box)

Machine: Digital alphastation 500
Processor: 266 Mhz alpha EV5
Memory: 128MB

Base System Installation Checklist:

Initial boot worked:[O]
Configure network HW: [O]
Config network: [O]
Detect CD: [O]
Load installer modules: [O]
Detect hard drives: [O]
Partition hard drives: [O]
Create file systems:[O]
Mount partitions: [E]
Install base system:[E]
Install boot loader:[ ]
Reboot: [ ]
[O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it

Comments/Problems:

When selecting ext3 filesystem for the /boot partition, it gives the
following error:

lqqqu [!!] Partition disks tk
x x
x Aboot requires /boot to be located on an ext2 partition on a bootable x
x device. This means that either the root partition must be an ext2x
x filesystem, or you must have a separate ext2 partition mounted at x
x /boot.x
x x
x Currently, /boot is located on a partition of type ext3. If you keep x
x this setting, you will not be able to boot your Debian system using x
x aboot.x
x x
x Use unsupported filesystem type for /boot?x
x x
x x
x x
mqqqj

When selecting 'yes', the installer loops back to partitioning menu.

Now, making a new partition for /boot, and setting it as ext2. When going
forward, it gives the same error message - even when the /boot partition
_is_ an ext2 file system.

Is it really so that aboot can't boot from ext3 partition?

Hi

discover1 has this change in its changelog for 1.5-10:
  - Change default CD-ROM mountpoint base to /media (Closes: #245898)

Since then it breaks d-i cdroms, because they are mounted in /media and
discover tries to remove the directories there.
Gives an error while installing grub on i386 (you can simply go on
after this, but it still is an error message).

The SATA_SIL driver should be included, it is not included and other
RAID chipsets are, this is a popular chipset which supports RAID on

The installer didn't load ehci-hcd for this machine under a CD boot
where it did under a USB boot (!?). I've got no idea (yet) how modules
are called before the ISO is mounted, so I'm assigning this to install.

The usb controller is a 82801DB USB2 chip. The usb1 driver was loaded,
but the X300's cdrom drive is on the usb2 bus.

Comments/Problems:

as mentioned above there should be a device /dev/ataraid to partition as
the 2 IDE Drives are mirrored by the inbuild promise fasttrack ide-raid
controller. former debian woody installer gives /dev/ataraid first and
then /dev/hde and /dev/hdg to be partitioned. TC1 has only /dev/hde and
/dev/hdg to chooseso it's impossible to setup debian on the mirrored
raid with the new installer.

1) it is possible to load ataraid and pdcraid manually but installation
stops at=20
/usr/sbin/mkinitrd: device /dev/ataraid/c0d0p1 is not a block device=20

Package: discover1-data
Version: whatever came with 20040408's netinst daily CD

kernel version: 2.4.25-1-386

General hardware: stock Dell Precision 350 Bios rev A01 [3.06GHz Pentium IV
w/Hyperthreading turned on]
Relevant hardware: PS/2 keyboard, USB mouse

problem vector: /usr/sbin/usb-discover

Synopsis: Insertion of usb-uhci.o module DISABLES PS/2 keyboard.
Installation is rendered impossible.

The Short Version:
PS/2 Keyboard stops functioning immediately after insertion of usb-uhci.o

PS/2 Keyboard stops functioning with or without any USB devices installed.

PS/2 Keyboard continues functioning with usb-ehci.o inserted.

PS/2 Keyboard stops functioning with or without framebuffer.

PS/2 Keyboard functions normally under RedHat [2.4.18][this is probably
apples vs. oranges] with usb-uhci.o inserted.

Troubleshooting (aka, the long version):
When I boot from the sarge netinst CD image daily 03/29 or 04/08, the
keyboard locks at the first screen [choose your lang]..

booting init=/bin/sh works, and invoking usb-discover locks the keyboard.

modprobing /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/usb/host/usb-uhci.o works,
the module when inserts without error, BUT the keyboard is then
non-functional.

While PS/2 keyboard input is impossible, inserting/removing a usb mouse does
result in expected USB kernel messages. So machine is not locked.

In short:
Machine currently has RedHat 8 on it. [i know this is apples and oranges,
but] usb-uhci and usb-ehci both seem to work fine.

Machine is equipped with both UHCI and EHCI controllers, the output of lspci
[when invoked under redhat, for informational purposes] is as follows:

lspci -n

This works perfectly as well in /tftpboot/pxelinux.cfg/default:

I'll fix that in the manual.

I've noticed the same behavior. Also (as you noticed as well), if there
already is a swap partition on the drive to begin with, automatic
partitioning will still create a new swap partition instead of using the
existing one.
Reassigning this report to partman.

This is a known error for Beta4 for NTFS partitions; fixed in more recent
versions.

Bug#254735: PXE/netboot installation: success

2004-06-16 Thread Frans Pop
Package: installation-reports
Version: TC1

Triggered by a question on #debian-boot and my own curiosity, I decided to try
and netboot d-i for my Toshiba Satellite A40 laptop using PXE booting.

Here's how I did it.
The documentation (d-i manual) is not quite correct, but the solutions were
fairly easy after combining info from several places
I'll update the relevant parts of the manual.

Preparing the server

I already had dhcp3-server installed on a Woody server in my network.
- installed packages atftpd (tftpd does not work!)
installing atftpd with all options default works
- installed package syslinux
only one file from this package is needed; I purged it after copying that
- create directory /tftpboot (world readable, contents also)
- cp /usr/lib/syslinux/pxelinux.0 /tftpboot
- wget netboot files (initrd.gz, mini.iso, vmlinuz) into /tftpboot
  I downloaded the TC1 version
- create file 'default' in new directory /tftpboot/pxelinux.cfg/ (see below)
- edit /etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf (see below)
- boot laptop => d-i starts :-)
That's all!

First installation test
===
The installation using only default options (getting both d-i modules and base
system from the network) went perfectly.

Second installation test

I next set up netboot to start d-i at medium priority (nice :-).
I selected cdrom-detect as an extra installer module to load, because I wanted
to see if I could install the base-system from CD-ROM. So I selected 'Detect
and mount CD-ROM' after 'Load installer components'.
After I selected 'Install the base system' it started installation off the
CD-ROM automatically :-).
Note: netboot d-i and the CD have to be compatible; combining TC1 netboot with
sid_d-i CD-ROM results in 'Debbootstrap error: Couldn't download libdb2'.
After switching the CD to the TC1 version, everything worked perfectly again.

/tftpboot/pxelinux.cfg/default (last two lines actually on same line)
==
LABEL linux
   KERNEL vmlinuz
   APPEND load initrd=initrd.gz ramdisk_size=8192 devfs=mount root=/dev/ram \
  DEBCONF_PRIORITY=medium

Not sure if the 'load' option is necessary...

Addition to /etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf (can probably be improved a bit)
=
host tftpserver {
   fixed-address 10.x.x.x;
   hardware ethernet AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF;
}

host pxeclient {
   hardware ethernet UU:VV:WW:XX:YY:ZZ;
   fixed-address 10.x.x.y;
   option host-name "pxeclient";

   filename "/tftpboot/pxelinux.0";
   next-server tftpserver;
}

Cheers,
FJP

It said that a 'root=' line would be ignored. But when I booted, it said that
it couldn't open the root file system. I found that I had to append
'root=/dev/ram' before booting the image; this worked well.

---

I was also not really happy with the automatic partioning. I already had some
partions, but I wanted to let the installer partition the drive
automatically, so delete the partitions and let the installer partition the
free space. However, I couldn't delete the partition with the downloaded
cd-image (of course). I deleted the other partitions, but the installer
didn't use the space after the cd-image (where formerly my swap partition
resided). Instead, it created a swap partition in the free space _before_ the
partition with the cd-image. I still wanted to use the space after it, so I
created a swap partition in that space and let the installer try it again.
But it made a second swap partition! That's why I'm not really happy with
it...

---

The bootloader installed well, but it didn't include Windows NT on my first
disk (not that I use it very often... :) ). I had to do this manually. Maybe
this is because I had LILO before I started with the installation, which
resided before the WinNT bootloader, so that the installer couldn't recognize
it.

---

I hope this is useful.

at the beginnig of the boot process? I overlooked this myself, until
somebody pointed it out to me. Your problem could be related to mine.

The root of my problem was actually the memory sticks. These were
located in DIMM3 and DIMM4, but moving them to DIMM1 and DIMM2 helped
and away went the initrd -> kernel panic problem. More details at:

Well, I unfortunately can't commit to any of these times, my schedule is
just too up in the air right now while we're preparing to move. But
FWIW, I also don't have the ability to propagate udebs to testing, this
is something that currently requires direct intervention of an
ftpmaster; to date, I believe James has been handling most of these at
Joey's request.

That's pretty interesting, and probably very critical info. Thanks for
trying that.

What it means to me is that either SILO or the kernel (likely SILO)
isn't coping well with the physical memory being located high up when it
comes to the initrd. I'll move some sticks around in my U5 and see if I
can reproduce this bug now. I could never reproduce it before.

So? How is it resolvable using the Packages files provided by the cds?

libdebconfclient-udeb is pre-installed in the initrd, so it shouldn't
matter what debian-cd does.

RE: [SOLVED] Take 3: sparc64 CDs work?

2004-06-16 Thread Gary Parker
Well, it certainly used to be the case on Ye Olde SPARCs (talking IPX and
+1's here) that the size of kernel and/or initrd you could boot from
depended on the size of the first two memory modules in the machine and it
was therefore essential to have the two largest modules at the beginning of
the memory map.

I have no idea if this is still the case on the SPARC64 architecture but it
would be my first guess as to why this fixed your problem.

Bug#253402: Deadlock with no ethernet card

2004-06-16 Thread Baptiste Carvello
Hello,
Same here with tc1. I get presented successively with the following
templates:
1) choice of modules: I choose "none of the above"
2) do I have a driver floppy ? I answer "no"
3) an error template that informs me no hardware was found.
From there I go back to 1), the only way to break the deadlock is to
press the ESC key. After pressing the ESC key, no error seems to be
raised, and the installer goes on to netcfg (which complains).

I looked into the code, a while loop is used, which has no way to break
out without a working interface, except if you have no drivers at all. I
don't think this loop serves any essential purpose. ethdetect sould not
try that hard to get an interface, because it is perfectly acceptable
that the computer has no ethernet card (or an unsupported one). In my
opinion, it should just warn, and go on. What happens next is netcfg's
problem (see bug #243543 for my opinion on that matter).

See U,
Baptiste

Well, as I messed with the 0.8 upload (I uploaded the package but
forgot commiting my changes), there is a little chance that
something went wrong somewhere.

.../...

Goshit has definitely the wrong script...:-(

We need a 0.10 upload for putting back what was in 0.8 which I forgot
to commit...:-(

/me nocks his head against the wall

.../...

I have made a 0.10 upload (and DIDN'T FORGET to commit my changes this
time) for fixing this. I tag the bug appropriately anyway.

Bug#243543: no /etc/network/interfaces on a machine without network card

2004-06-16 Thread Baptiste Carvello
On May 23, 2004 13:19, Joshua Kwan wrote:
I think it will just crap out and moan that it has no interfaces. :(
Basically, we need some sort of heuristic to crap out conditionally,
by determining whether the boot media contains enough pkgs to complete
the install, or halt the installation right there because it would be
impossible.
Indeed, it does crap out !
More precisely, it displays a red error template (netcfg/no-interfaces,
this is in netcfg-common.c) explaining the problem, with 2 buttons: Go
Back and Continue, but this choice is not taken into account.
Whatever the choice, it then returns with an error code (return code 10,
this is in the main routine of netcfg.c), which leads to another error
template ("an installation step failed"), before I can access the main
menu.
No configuration whatsoever is done.

Apart from the obvious UI problem, I think netcfg should try harder to
limit the damage, which means at least writing the generic part of the
config files.
The reason for that is, it is much easier to add a few driver debs
afterwards, than to find out which correction is needed to which config
file. It may be that people with unsupported ethernet cards need to edit
/etc/network/interfaces anyway, but DSL is more and more common these days.
In my personnal case, I use a USB DSL modem, based on the Eagle chipset,
so I just need to download 3 .deb packages (eagle-usb-utils,
eagle-usb-data, and eagle-usb-modules for the running kernel). I then
install them on tty2 at the beginning of 2nd stage, and I can access the
debian archive. This is much easier for a new user (and even an
experienced one...) than go edit the congif files !

minimalistic initrd, I still wasn't able to get past the initrd issue.

I thought to myself that I was probably doing something wrong since
working with initrd and building sparc isos is all new to me, so I just
gave up after a dusin tries or so.

Then today (don't know why this idea came to me) I decided to open up
the box and juggle around with the memory sticks. And voila! Moving the
two sticks from DIMM3 and DIMM4 to DIMM1 and DIMM2 made the initrd
issue go away (booted with default SILO parameters). Dunno why Sarge is
picky, when Woody, Solaris, and some old SuSE is not.

Do you think you'll soon be able to publish these translation

As the meeting has been announced on IRC /topic, I prefer currently
leaving this hour of 16:00. If too much people are missing we'll
reschedule to 23:00 (01:00 for me, sigh).

I changed the entry for this to pcdraid and the other ataraid entry (bug
#254451) to medley. ataraid is a support module that should be loaded
for all ataraid controllers by dependency.

I prefer Saturday 23:00 UTC than Saturday 16:00 UTC.

Because I have a party with friends and drinks at Saturday evening

Hello Matt,

I guess so, I have made a tar of my scripts available at:
http://home.tiscali.nl/isildur/d-i/manual-build-scripts.tar.gz

I run the build-manual script from cron in a chroot. This does all the hard
work and calls translation-stats and create-index. After build-manual has
finished, I run mail-logs outside the chroot (otherwise the mails would end
up in a black hole ;-).

The script you want is create-index. You'll have to remove the translation
statistics stuff.
The page is build using a fixed header and footer with the middle part
containing the links added by the script.
The script depends on 'maillist' and 'archlist'. I think it would be best to
add these to doc/manual/build/ in SVN so you can use them and also modify the
existing build.sh to use these files.
Let me know if you think that's a good idea and I'll do that.

Some thoughts/comments/questions

The manual currently is far from ready. Still a lot of stuff is more Woody
oriented than applicable to Sarge. Only 4 translations are currently complete
(well, almost).
Is it really advisable to publish this on the main website yet? Maybe a
general page with a lot of disclaimers and a link to the project page is more
logical ATM.

I don't think it's useful to publish the same stuff in two places:
- - will you also build from SVN?
- - how often?
- - all languages/architectures or only those that are more or less complete?
Maybe an option would be for me to do daily builds for all languages - maybe
all archs for 'en' and only i386 for translations - (for the benefit of
writers and translators). Other archs could be temporarily added on request
if someone plans to do some heavy arch specific editing.

Once the manual gets more up to date, we could think of creating a development
version and periodically tag a version as 'stable' (with up to date
translations) for publication on the main site.

As the index page for the main website will be auto generated, how will you
support translations of that page?

Cheers,
FJP

It would be useful to add a special suffix to the executable
files in /usr/lib/base-config/menu which will be considered
as menu entries.

For example we could have:

mta.cfg mta.mnu mta.tst

and then change the code in prep-menu accordingly:

find menu \( -type f -or -type l \) -perm -700 -printf '%f\n' | grep .cfg

This way it would be easier for other packages to customise base-config. For
example a package could provide a custom mta.cfg diverting the original file
to mta.cfg.distrib, and prep-menu will not include the .distrib file in the
menu.

Yes true, and that's fine for me.
