This happens under 2.4 and 2.6. If you still have the system, what happens if you modprobe aic7xxx on the installed system? Any interesting messages to console or dmesg? Does the system actually have a card that would be driven by this, or was it completly spurious that the installer tried to load the module? > During network hardware detection, with linux26, it failed to detect the > network adapter. 2.4 didn't fail, and detected both "BROADCOM > Corporation NetXtreme BCM5703X Gigabit Ethernet" adapters, using what I > think is the 'tg3' driver. I'm of two minds about this. I'd love to see partman-auto have support for recipes with lvm, because I would like to be able to get rid of autopartkit, possibly. On the other hand, if I'm installing a system with d-i, I probably don't want to use lvm. I prefer to keep my systems simple and I don't need the complication of lvm on them. This is a personal preference, and maybe I shouldn't be using the autopartitioner. But if lvm support is added, we need to at least consider giving users the option of profiles that don't use it. -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature

ports-status powerpcc newworld netboot update
Hello Debian Install System Team, For what I today learnt is that the d-i kernels are too big for netbooting newworld powerpc computers. Could http://www.nl.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/ports-status be updated with something like archsubacrch media daily released comment, workaround powerpc newworld netboot builds beta 4needs yaboot with 5Mb-plus support (marking daily build as yello "builds" and the workaround) bugreport #256263 is about a request for yaboot that supports kernels that are larger than five megabyte. .svn in initrd
Hi, I am just poking around :) 20040624/sarge-i386-businesscard.iso In gunzipped and mounted initrd, I see "lib/debian-installer.d/.svn" directory. Maybe if it is like CVS, source should be read with "CVS export" like command instead of "CVS co". Is this intentional? Bug#256237: The time between screens is annoyingly long
Package: partman Severity: minor Hi! Using partman to edit the partition table can be quite annoying. One of the things is, for example, the time between screens. It might not be evident if you have a fast machine, but testing it with a PII or similar is enough to make anyone crazy (you can't imagine what it's like when testing on a m68k). Is there a reason why it takes SO MUCH time to go from the partition-menu to the formatting-menu, and then back? (the same with mount point and the other screens). I don't know what kind of checks are being done in the middle, but I'm hoping that these tests could be optimized all in one stage, so that the rest of the stages go fast. Please take a look at this, you can make the interface much nicer by making it fast. -- Besos, Maggie. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Everything went well until I got to partman. There were no discs. Going to ALT-F2, I modprobed "aic7xxx", restarted partman, and then my SCSI drives were there. I'm guessing this is a bug in discover, or maybe something else, not realizing that it has to load this module. Can this be fixed? Are you sure that 'linux' is the right name? What does your yaboot.conf look like? If you're booting 2.6, you'll need to set up a yaboot.conf, since yaboot can't boot an initrd kernel otherwise; if you're booting 2.4, try 'enet:0,/vmlinux' (I think that's right, it's been a while). -- Colin Watson [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". But middle term, it would be nice to have a non-intrusive (for the rest) but easily advertisable way of installing a CCD from the official image, if this is feasable. Something like typing 'debian-junior' at the boot prompt, at the expense of having no boot prompt flexibility for CCDs. However, it still is broken the way it is done right now, since env2debconf loads the default frontend from /etc/cdebconf.conf (newt) since there is no DEBIAN_FRONTEND variable at that point, which fails on a system which doesn't have cdebconf-newt installed, terminating the whole /sbin/debian-installer loop and restarting from the beginning (failing again and again). So S50frontend should perhaps indeed be moved to run before S25env2debconf? -- CYa, Mario | Debian Developer http://debian.org/> | Get my public key via finger [EMAIL PROTECTED] | 1024D/7FC1A0854909BCCDBE6C102DDFFC022A6B113E44 pgpmUwhg4TbuU.pgp Description: PGP signature

The default hostname in the prompt should be the one returned via DHCP, IMHO. If you don't need a host-name to get a lease before reboot then you shouldn't need a host-name to get a lease after reboot. If a host-name isn't needed then no "send host-name" line should be written to dhclient.conf. The installer should not configure the system to request a lease in a different way from the way that was tried and proved successful. > In fact, I'm not sure that the 'else' branch to the first 'if' really adds > something: why would a DHCP-request with send host-name succeed if the first > try without one fails? Sending a host-name could result in failure to obtain a lease. Also, sending a host-name requires asking the user for a host-name prior to attempting to obtain a lease. It is better to skip that step if a lease can be obtained without asking the user anything. > I've pasted an example of the lease I get at the bottom of this message. > > The lease I get returned _after_ (manually) adding 'send host-name > ""' is exactly the same (I think this indicates that the server > has accepted the proposed host-name), but having the client send it means the > DHCP-server is able to dynamically add the host-name in my DNS server (and so > enabling me to ping .fjphome.nl from other boxes in the network). Shouldn't the server be able to add your hostname to DNS without your client having to request this by requesting the hostname? Sounds like a peculiarity of your server. In any case this is something that you can configure locally. I don't think that the installer should configure dhclient this way by default, for the reasons given above. Bug#256067: Installation failure
Michael Satterwhite wrote: > Initial boot from CD worked fine. Try booting the installer and at this point, press alt-f2 to go to the second virtual console, press enter to open the shell prompt, and manually run the command "modprobe -v aic7xxx", and let us know what the error message, if any, is. -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Installer seemed to see NIC -- module was loaded in alt console, but never started network configuration. Selecting network module in expert mode resulted in message to the effect "requested module not available". Workaround: after first boot, load module & configure network manually in alt console, return to package selection to select mirror. Bug#255263: How to run lspci on a newly installed system?

This is why I > change the subject, just to get people attention. I'd suggest knoppix. However, just cat /proc/pci actually includes all the info that's in lspci, so you can use that in a pinch. For lspci -n (which we also need), you can cat /proc/bus/pci/devices. -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#255128: cdrom-detect: Bad handling of mount error

You can't, it will lose the exit status. Luckily all stderr is sent to /var/log/messages anyway. > Also, I wish I could add a screen display stating "Trying again". > Otherwise, it takes forever especially with 1 second pause as Vince > complained. I never used debconf. Let's get it working, and then later make it pretty. That's not hard to do, and I'm sure someone will eventally add a progress bar for it. -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#255431: ddetect: finds mptscsih.o too late
martin f krafft wrote: > For kicks, I used VMware's Symbios Logic SCSI adapter, which needs > the mptscsih.o module. When scanning for CD-ROMs, this module was > not displayed in the list. It always scans for everything, and it always installs all available module for any hardware it finds that does not have a module loaded yet. If it didn't find this module until the second run, then it was presumably loaded from the CD during the first run. So I guess you didn't have a CD drive on a controller driver by the mptscsih kernel module. mptscsih is included in the scsi-extra-modules udeb, which is not included on the CD initrd to save space. As you noted, if the CD was on such a SCSI controller, d-i would not be able to mount the CD. If mptscsih is non-esoteric (the kernel config description of it sounded pretty esoteric to me) and if it's possible to hook a CD up to it, then it needs to be in a different udeb than this one. The kernel docs don't mention Symbios Logic SCSI adapter's needing the mptscsih module. Is that really the right one, and can you really hook a CD (or virtual CD) up to the controller?
