Re: cardmgr start message during base install (extra packages)
[Per Olofsson] Isn't policy-rc.d a cleaner solution? AFAIK nothing in policy requires a package to use start-stop-daemon, but it does say that maintainer scripts [1]should use invoke-rc.d. Perhaps. But at the moment, start-stop-daemon has the largest chance of working. Maybe both techniques should be used since invoke-rc.d is not a strict requirement yet. I guess we could do both, and remove the dummy start-stop-daemon when everything is using invoke-rc.d. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#261834: install: cannot partition for aboot on alpha
Hi Steve, thanks for your quick reply. Things are looking better now, but are not completely perfect yet. culprit: partitioning of the second disk should never modify previous settings for sda Auto-partitioning means that you're allowing the system to choose a fixed partition layout for you. I don't think it's reasonable to expect auto-partitioning of /dev/sdb to keep partitions from /dev/sda that use the same mountpoints. Agreed. I'd expect /boot to persist though... doesn't matter anymore since auto-partitioning now includes aboot and /boot partitions (tested with both multi-user and separate home). If you're going to mixmatch autopartitioning and manual partitioning, the autopartitioning needs to be done first. This would be a bad idea if there was no aboot in the autopart. Fixed now. partition procedure 2: (single disk) - erase disk SCSI2 0,0,0 (sda) - Go Back - create empty partition tables for sda and sdb - create sda1 32MB for use with aboot - create sda2 32MB ext2 as /boot - create sda[3-5] (automatically or manually, doesn't matter, with settings used by automatic partitioning with /home) previous 3 steps replaced by autopartition with separate home - next step will refuse aboot installation (no space for aboot) and throw me back to partitioning. still there. I'm now using the boot.img of 28-Jul-2004 16:07 (~vorlon/d-i/images/daily/netboot as of 2004-07-28), 5407273 bytes. The no space for aboot error is a subtle busybox bug that should be fixed in today's daily images. Please re-open this bug if you find that you're still having problems. I'm inclined to believe that this is a corner case we haven't handled, and maybe it only applies on powerpc. Because I can't reproduce it for the life of me. If you configure your network device manually, does it work? If so, boot with DEBCONF_DEBUG=5, stick a pscp binary somewhere, wget it once you've manually configured the network, and put /var/log/syslog and /var/log/messages somewhere I can see them. Thanks, and sorry for not getting to this bug earlier. -- Joshua Kwan I tried it again tonite with the 20040728 businesscard CD. After configuring the network manually, it returned me to the main menu with configure network hilighted. Same as before. This time, however, I manually moved the hilight forward to the next step and hit return. As before, it returned me to the configure network step where I again requested manual configuration and answered the questions. This time, it *didn't* return me to the main menu with configure network hilighted. Instead, it took me to the next step and asked me what protocol (http or ftp) I wanted to use. Well OK! I thought. Answering the manual configuration questions twice is not *so* bad -- I can live with it. I thought. It did it's normal thing: downloaded and partitioned and rebooted. I was getting hopeful. But... After the reboot, the network was not properly configured. It's as if all the information I input (twice) about the network addresses and router addresses and DNS server addresses, all got thrown away and never made it past the reboot. JHM, can you talk to -boot and then prepare an urgency high upload? I've refrained from making any changes to debootstrap's list of packages to be installed for some time now, as a previous upload of mine making such changes caused quite some irritation with the d-i folks. I'll be happy to do an upload, provided there is a clear consensus from the d-i folks as to which changes to the packages list are to be installed. So, folks, what changes in the list of packages installed by debootstrap would you like to see? (I think gnutls11 should also be added, but I haven't followed that discussion closely.) That's one of the things I'd like an answer to. So, folks, what changes in the list of packages installed by debootstrap would you like to see? What I as a _user_ would like to see is one or mor separate lists that I can easily hack on. The standard list of packages that gets installed is not what I want, and so that entails me installing stuff I don't want and then replacing it with my choices. There's a lot of folk running Postfix, Sendmail and other MTAs. Making them install exim makes no sense at all. Then there's the fact there are some packages I _always_ install - vim, less and many others. It should be simple for me to get them all in, simple for me to create custom install images instead of having to rebuild the whole shebang. -- Cheers John -- spambait [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] Tourist pics http://portgeographe.environmentaldisasters.cds.merseine.nu/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. I did, a couple of days ago. As you say, debian-cd on gluck needs a cvs update of tools/boot/sarge/boot-powerpc. manty? Sorry, my fault, I thought I had updated that already, but I hadn't, I have just updated it right now, so today's build should be ok. Methinks it is /dev/eth0 that is unreachable. The messages continued sporadically until I rebooted out of the installation. Bug#238301: After installer has run many debconf questions are not seeded
Mark Brown wrote: I've found some more instances of this problem. I managed to catch a diff of the config files before and after the upgrade, though I didn't remember to rerun the upgrade or cache the entire database: Now I understand. This is because debootstrap installs packages using the noninteractive frontend which does not set questions to seen as the user has indeed not seen them. It's true that this could lead to some questions that have already set and presumably working values being asked on upgrade. I don't know of a good way to avoid this at this time; debconf's handling of the seen flag for the noninteractive frontend is basically correct; debootstrap's use of the noninteractive frontend is correct, and there's no way d-i can go back after the fact and mark questions as seen. -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature
release status update
I've submitted what I hope will be the final debian-installer build to the autobuilders, but it seems that recent dependency breakage in newt will cause some of the builds to fail. I hope I can ask the autobuilders to retry, but this will likely delay things for a few days. At this point it's probably too late to get any changes into udebs in the initrds, and there are probably only a few days left to make changes to other udebs. Any changes will be synced to testing on a per-udeb basis again until we release, so you have to give me a very good reason to put in a change. In the meantime, the daily built images (but still the sid_d-i CDs, not sarge_d-i) are very close to what we will release, so please test them as much as you can, and update installer/doc/checklist. I'm mailing everyone in doc/testers.txt to try to get some broader testing. I still don't know if this release should be called beta5 or rc1, and I think the best way to decide is to see how well it gets tested and how many errata-level problems we find. There is also a DRAFT release announcement in installer/doc. Maybe I forgot some noteworthy features, please check. -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature

The bootstrap will tell the user that it cannot run from FastRAM but doesn't advise to use an utility for clearing the bits in the bootstra.prg header. Best would probably be to provide two bootstraps where the second would have the bits cleared so users could use that without fiddling with the utility. Second, the kernel simply does not boot. It doesn't do anything. Not even switch the graphics mode. It just gets loaded and sits there. I deactivated the ramdisk loading to make sure it's not low memory problem. I believe the kernel should try to boot. But there is no sign it did. Petr -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Trying to install to SATA drives on RAID 1 [REPOST #2]
I'm going to give this one more try. Please reply via email as i won't be subscribed to this list for long. I thought i had documented this problem clearly and in the right place - if i haven't *please let me know so i can find the _right_ place*. Hi folks, My Debian installation saga continues. I've just tried my fourth different method. My hardware is: Gigabyte GA-7N400Pro m/b (nForce2 chipset) Athlon XP 2400+ 512 Mb DDR RAM Silicon Image SI3112 onboard SATA, 2 x WD 200 Gb drives (target) ITE IT8212F onboard ATA RAID, 2 x Seagate 80 Gb drives (Red Hat 9) Standard ATA, 1 x Seagate 80 Gb drive GF4 MX440 AGP 8x 2 x RTL-8139 NICs This is what i've tried so far to install: 1. Install via Sarge beta3/beta4/TC1/latest snapshot (using kernel 2.6), set up RAID devices. Result: system lockup as soon as first md device creation initiated. noapic and nolapic directives made no difference. 2. Boot Morphix. Create md devices and mount them on the appropriate target directories, then run the morphix installer. Upgrade and downgrade and upgrade and downgrade until apt doesn't complain any more. Works OK, but doesn't give me a running 2.6 kernel, even after manual installation - seems to be an issue with the NVIDIA proprietary drivers. Also slow due to pre-2.4.26 SI3112 driver. 3. Install Libranet 2.8.1 - the least successful of the methods i've tried so far. It doesn't seem to support RAID in the installer, and there doesn't seem to be a way to get the partitions mounted manually. 4. Install latest Sarge snapshot to standard ATA drive. Set up RAID devices (md0 = 1 Gb /boot, md1 = 4 Gb swap, md2 = 195 Gb /), rsync ATA partition to SATA partitions, chroot to target partitions and run LILO. This last method seems to be on the verge of working, but when i boot from the /boot partition, it can't mount md2 on /. I can boot from the SATA /boot and use the ATA /. It seems the md devices aren't started, and i can't work out how to include them in the initrd. On RH, you could just specify preload modules on the mkinitrd command line, but that doesn't seem to be the case here. I added raid1 and md to /etc/mkinitrd/modules, but that doesn't help. The images to try are the daily builds linked to from http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/ I'm working on it. It pretty much works, but serial console (which is crucial to VME, as it has nothing else) and userdevfs don't like eachother quite yet. Trying to fix that; with a bit of luck, I'll be able to do a tested commit to rootskel and userdevfs tonight which will make it work. Next, vmelilo-installer is clearly written by someone who didn't have the hardware -- it doesn't even remotely work. Bug#240963: failed to find CD after boot; successful network install
Sorry, the machine that I installed on and submitted that report from, currently has its harddrive full with 40GB of movies and music. It is running Fedora Core 2. I do plan on switching to Debian once Sarge goes stable. Anyway, after I submitted that report, another release candidate of the Sarge installer was released, and I tried that. It fixed most of my issues. However, some of my bugs weren't necessarily bugs... but they should at least be considered wrinkles in the installer, which should be ironed out. 1. The audio problems turned out to be due to the fact that my user account wasn't a member of the audio (or what is sound) group. Hence it didn't have priveleges to open /dev/dsp. Adding the account to that group made sound work. My only suggestion is to consider letting newly made accounts be a member of the audio group by default. Makes it easier on us newbs. 2. The CD detection problem wasn't that my CD drive wasn't detected. It was that I have two drives: CDRW drive and a DVD drive. I can't remember which drive the Debian disk was in, but when it came to package installation... the installer was looking at the wrong drive. It would have been more user-friendly, if it knew which drive the CD was in when there were multiple CD drives. -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi, first and foremost: thank you for your bug report http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=240963 I'm currently processing old installation reports, and since you reported some problems with the debian installer back in March, I would very much appreciate it, if you could find time to download and test the latest[1] cd image and confirm whether you still see the problems you've mentioned. If you can confirm they are no longer present, I will close this report. Much has changed with the installer since March, and it is not unlikely that the problems you mention have been dealt with by the Debian Developers working on the installer. Please consider including the base-installer 1.01 and the nobootloader 0.17 .udebs i uploaded today. The 1.01 base-installer include a nicer way to handle powerpc kernels with builtin initrd, and also makes sure that kernel upgraded after the install will be functional. The nobootloader change include giving exacter booting instructions for the powerpc/chrp_pegasos (a thing which could be cloned for other arches without boot loader but with known boot procedures), as well as add the logic for the generic case. Ideally, a string change would be needed to tell the user about the partition in which to find the kernel in the generic case, but this can wait for after the beta5/rc1 release, but it would look nicer. The string change is not a sever one though, just adding on partition ${BOOT} in the boot instruction to know where the kernel is. sid_d-i breakage, debootstrap hotfixes, and TODO for per-arch bootloader maintainers
Today's upload of debootstrap implemented the change described at http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2004/04/msg00634.html ff. to remove all bootloaders from the base system. Unfortunately, d-i itself is not ready for such a change, as most of the bootloaders in question don't yet have installers that call apt-install. Since the new debootstrap-udeb made it into the archive today, tomorrow's sid_d-i images will be broken with respect to five bootloaders -- silo, palo, vmelilo, elilo, and dvhtool. Two other bootloaders, aboot and delo, have the necessary support already in the installers, so they should be ok as long as the necessary debian-cd changes are imported before tomorrow's daily build. If not, netinst CDs for alpha and mipsel will be broken, but other install methods should work. An NMU of debootstrap has been uploaded reverting the change for the five affected archs, and I will be filing bugs shortly against the corresponding five bootloader installers. -- Steve Langasek postmodern programmer signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Lowmem problem on mips resurfaces
d-i's failing again on mips (Indy r4k) with 32 MB. Netbooting from a current svn build dies just after the base system components are downloaded, and the 20040729 sarge_d-i CD images start failing during network configuration as the VM begins to kill processes. I just commited a patch to increase the lowmem trigger to 33 MB. The relevant message on vt4 is kernel: __alloc_pages: 0-order allocation failed (gfp=0x1d2/0) I got (via serial console) a endless stream of Killed. messages. Installation with 64 MB still works, with maximum usage at about 34 MB before swap activation. (total available for use 61140 kB, used 30968, free 30172.) Installing sarge with a netboot-install daily image gave an overall usage of 36 MB, that is ~ 33 MB userspace RAM as counted by lowmem. The ip22 machine's RAM granularity is 16 MB (that is, 32 or 48 MB is available), so there's no risk of overflowing the chosen value. The last time I tried a lowmem install, with the 20040708 CD builds, it was successful with ~30 MB maximum usage. With lowmem active I got a similiar result. lowmem override disparity
There are disparities between your recently accepted upload and the override file for the following file(s): lowmemcheck_1.00_i386.udeb: package says priority is standard, override says optional. Bug#262200: debian-installer: d-i downloads unneeded packages
Package: debian-installer Severity: normal I'm doing a network install via modem. I've discovered d-i downloading, amongst others, jfs and lvm udebs. I won't be using either, so this is simply wasted time. I suggest that downloading and installing optional udebs be deferred until it's clear they are wanted. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.5-1-686 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Crude Hack, or Elegant Solution
My effort at answering questions by inserting them into the environment failed. However, I've discovered env2debconf. With this small change: sed floppy/sbin/env2debconf~ floppy/sbin/env2debconf \ -e 's/set -e/set -ex/' \ -e '/for/ s=\set\=set;cat /etc/env 2/dev/null=' I can put a list into /etc/env and the answers become the new defaults. It seems to me this approach goes a good way to automating the process of installing with d-i. These are values I'm using atm: ns:/mnt# cat floppy/etc/env mirror/country=Australia mirror/protocol=http mirror/http/hostname=debian.demo.lan mirror/http/proxy=http://debian.demo.lan:3128/ apt-setup/mirror=ftp.wa.au.debian.org mirror/suite=testing apt-setup/country=Australia apt-setup/directory=/debian apt-setup/hostname=debian.demo.lan apt-setup/non-free=true apt-setup/non-us=true apt-setup/contrib=true To some extent I'm guessing what to do: atm the choice of mirror doesn't work, but country does. Questions I'd like answered now: 1. How do I get _my_ choices of install language and keyboard? 2. How do I get these questions marked seen so I don't see them? 3. Is there a script I can run to get a consolidated list of questions, acceptable answers? A grep over the templates file goes part of the way, 4. How do I tell d-i to install off debian.demo.lan? I'm trying to get something close to an automatic install, and that means no pauses unless there's an error. -- Cheers John -- spambait [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] Tourist pics http://portgeographe.environmentaldisasters.cds.merseine.nu/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#262201: PowerMac (OldWorld) - no driver for onboard SCSI
Package: installation-reports powerpc 20040724 businesscard OldWorld PowerMac kernel-2.6 INSTALL REPORT Debian-installer-version: sid_d-i/powerpc/20040724/sarge-powerpc-businesscard.iso Comments/Problems: The powerpc 2.6 kernel on the 20040724 businesscard CD is missing drivers (modules or built-in) for the Mac onboard SCSI bus. This happens on both my beige G3 minitower and my PowerMac 6500/225. On the G3 the problem manifests as not being able to see a SCSI Zip drive. On the 6500 it can't see any SCSI devices, CD-RW, 4.3 GB hard drive, or Zip. Rick -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

IA32 - missing disk
The 2.6 kernel from Jul 2 (I think from Sid) doesn't detect my IDE drive. According to the log, the IDE modules are missing. 2.4 of the same date does detect it. I don't have logs to offer, and I'm about to look for newer vmlinuz and initrd.gz. -- Cheers John -- spambait [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] Tourist pics http://portgeographe.environmentaldisasters.cds.merseine.nu/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
